View Full Version : Get speed!!!
Tu Pai 03-06-2009, 08:33 AM I've seen a lot of threads about getting power and technique but, how about speed??? Just good ol, blinding speed! Pls none of that chasing chicken **** :fing26: But whatever you seen that worked.
I think 2 or 3 pound dumbells in combination with shadowboxing. Your opinion?
Squabbles94806 03-06-2009, 10:25 AM You know what my trainer said? He said that it's not always about speed, but timing.
Speed is good. To have speed and timing is even better. If you have speed, power, timing and technique then you're solid.
If i were to choose between having the gift of speed or the gift of power, i'd take speed. Speed is power.
Don't do speed though.
Squirrel 03-06-2009, 11:06 AM Shadow boxing with weights is great yeah, but dont overdo it; do 2 or 3 rounds early in your training schedule and call it a day.
Using resistance bands or lifting heavy weights (in your 1-3 rep range) could also help.
Shadow boxing in a swimming pool would be good too.
Speed will also come with time; practise prefect form and technique and build up from there. Musicians see speed as a byproduct of technical proficiency. Something to consider.
SuperKing 03-07-2009, 04:06 PM A floor-ceiling ball is pretty good for speed as well as improving your hand eye coordination and timing of your punches. Shadowboxing with light dumbells will make things easier as well.
F l i c k e r 03-07-2009, 08:03 PM You have to fix your muscles for speed. Small compact muscles equal speed. So strip that useless muscle away with some cardio, then rebuild with explosive exercises with small amount of weight(if desired).
Shadow boxing is fine but you have to do it for speed. Meaning throwing your punches as fast as you can even if your tired. Dont cheat yourself, and dont worry about conservation of stamina because thats not your goal. Also, stay on your toes for speed, if you plant your feet it will slow you down. Planting will result in increase of power but when you gain something you lose something and that loss is speed.
How you truthfully gain speed though is through the type of muscle you have. Not many people realise this but you need a certain type of muscle to be fast. Small compact muscles equal speed. Think of all the fast boxers and their weight class. The size of their muscles are small for their weight.
Timing, leg + back muscles will give you power. Perfect example is Roy Jones Jr. Small muscles for a light heavy and his back is very strong, plus near perfect timing and he knocks people out.

stop giving my secrets away :omfg:
u can have all the compact mucles one could want, but if u suck at reading intention, u are not much better off.
and i didnt read anything about relaxtion, or different kinds if sped either. oh well. if u guys have all the answers, u neednt be writing on a forum - unless like me u have a career ending injury. btw, it is a knee ligament injury for me - so as i still mix it up, i am very carefull about receiving a kick to a certain leg even though i have strengthened it well.

yes! and btw, speed or power are not really gifts. the strongest people i know were not exactly football captains when they were teens.
one martial arts guy i know was sick and frailk - now, he is scary as hell and his forearms look like tree trunks. and he is fast!
one guy was a thin nerdy guy and ending up holding a weightlifting record for half a year. he has massive raw strength.
u get the point. all true stories btw.
