View Full Version : Who is Rocky of real boxing? mickyward5656 02-23-2009, 09:07 AM What fighter current or in the past do you feel best resembles rocky balboa? Simpleness7 02-23-2009, 09:19 AM I Thought It Was Based On Rocky Marciano??? mickeyb 02-23-2009, 09:28 AM I Thought It Was Based On Rocky Marciano??? Not in the slightest. Besides...Rocky's hero IS Rocky Marciano. 120 02-23-2009, 09:33 AM Katsidis reminds me of him. Any pure"brute" brawler will remind me of him Southpaw16BF 02-23-2009, 10:22 AM Sylvester Stallone (Rocky) saw the Muhammed Ali–Chuck Wepner fight which inspired the foundation idea of Rocky, due to Wepner being a underog against current Heavyweight Champion Muhhamed Ali, Wepner went into the fight with a 30-9-2 record, and was knocked out in the 15th, but put up a good effort and even dropped Ali in round 9. So I guess you could say Chuck Wepner is the realy Rocky! but never had as much sucess as Balboa. reedickyaluss 02-23-2009, 10:39 AM Not in the slightest. Besides...Rocky's hero IS Rocky Marciano. haha yup.... in Rockys apartment in the movie he has a poster of Rocky Marciano, and Mick comments on it.. "You know, you remind me a lot of the rock..." PLATE 02-23-2009, 12:27 PM A Wepner fight was the inspiration for the screenplay, but Balboa is pretty much a clone of Marciano. Both small men, tough, Italian, from humble beginnings, great punchers, crude, able to take massive amounts of punishment.. Yeah there is also similarites to Marcaino, but Balboa was southpaw, sometihng Marciano was not, Balboa never had no manager looking after him, as the way did Marcaino did with Al Weil, Balboa was always the oppoenet for a prospect to pad his record up, Marcaino was never no one's opponet, and Al Weil was always bringing club fighter opponets in for Marciano to learn his trade and pad his record. And when Marcaino won his world title it wasn't really a upset, but when Balboa won his title it was a massive one. mickyward5656 02-23-2009, 02:10 PM i have to say i think micky ward was the truw real life rocky. Ring warrior. Was only a B class fighter at best in terms of tallent, but you almost had to kill him to beat him, he was willing to die everytime he stepped into the ring, and left everything he had in the rinbg when he fought. Gatti also comes to mind. Hook 02-23-2009, 04:27 PM Gatti ..... Smokin'J 02-24-2009, 03:23 PM Joe Frazier if you check the backgrounds I guess. Truthfully stylewise, Marciano and yes story the first one was based on the Wepner - Ali figh. TSZYULANDER 02-24-2009, 05:10 PM Jeff Harding - Australian warrior MaTTuP 02-24-2009, 05:39 PM Mickey Ward hands down. For anyone who disagrees, read "Irish Thunder," the biography on Ward's life & what he's been through. He's a blue collar guy who struggled all of his life and came from a place where life beats most people down (Lowell, Mass). Crack, alcohol abuse, gangs, violence, prostitution among other things were rampent in this area when Mickey Ward was growing up. He had many family members messed up on this stuff. He didn't come from money. He was the most gifted in the ring. BUT he could brawl and absorb punishment like Rocky could. To me Irish Mickey Ward is one of the many reasons that I love boxing. He lost by a TKO near the end of round 15, it never went to the scorecard. KJB 02-24-2009, 09:41 PM James J Braddock. mickyward5656 02-24-2009, 09:49 PM Mickey Ward hands down.
