The Christian Right (some would say this is an oxymoron) are in charge now. It was clear from the voter turnout that they are going to be a serious political force. GW has taken their presence as a signal to begin attacking Roe V. Wade, Gay Marriage and other religious issues.

What can the democrats do if anything to either rally enough votes to combat the Christian Right. Or how can they challenge these issues?

Or if you just want to bash Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and what the hell ANYONE in the Christian Right go right ahead.

Ever since the Christian right took over the Republican party, what has happened to core values that the Right Wing held dear such as States Rights and the Constitution.

You now see the party which is supposed to be the defenders of the constitution, the "Strict Constructionists" are the ones clamoring for the renewal of the unconstitutional Patriot Act. You see these same "Strict Constructionists" want a constitutional amendment to define marriage.

As far as states rights go, they want Gay Marriage to be banned on a federal level, not leaving it up to the states. They also want to overturn Roe V. Wade instead of allowing the states to decide whether they want abortion to be legal or not.

Make no mistake about it. The Christian Right is out to make THEIR PERSONAL religious values the law of the land. I dunno about ya'll but I see a serious problem with this.

I truly believe LIBERAL Dems. are the reason there was such a huge turnout by the religious folk.

Basically, a bunch of Hollywood know-nothings thumbed their noses at these people....mocking them at every turn. This galvanized these people, basically awakening a sleeping giant.

I think you got something there. These people are the core of the Republican Party. The democrats need to find a way to rally their base. Also the Christian Right leaders did a good job of making it SEEM like the liberals were thumbing their noses at them even when they may not have been.

But, I will say that the REASON the liberals thumbed their noses at them is that the Religious right were the ones saying that Jesus will solve everything, and if you disagree with this, then it is because you are not following Jesus. Basically ya got a bunch of Angel Manfredys voting for Bush.

How do you beat the Christian right? With a Louisville Slugger. Or bomb them the same way they do abortion clinics

Christ, you hit the nail on the head there. I was getting so sick of Sean Penn's preaching I was getting embarassed to be on the same side as him.

I was reading an interview with one of the guys from Sum 41 recently. The band added some political stuff to their last album, but the guy (forget which one it was) kept insisting that people should not take their word for it, and should get themselves educated about the issues and stop listening to celebrities for political guidance.

Pretty bad when a member of a second-rate band is smarter than everyone else in La-La land.

I think the first thing to do is to stop calling people dumb who dont agree with you. I think a lot of people take offense to that and it something the left does a lot of. This type of behavior has been linked directly to the democrat party because of their embracing of people like Howard Dean and Michael Moore. I read today that Moore is now making a FH 911 1/2 because he thinks that the reason the Republicans won is just because the didnt get all the information. When will these people learn? Middle America is tired of people like Moore and the regular band of Hollwood morons telling them that they dont know what they're talking about. I think they do know what they're talking about and they just aren't that pissed about the things that the left is pissed about. These people care about religion, so called "morals" and national defense more than they care about the UN, people who dont work and the environment. If the Dems want to win an election any time soon the need to connect with middle America on a moral/spiritual level and forget about the Howard Deans of the party who only serve to put a wedge between the party and 51% of the American people.

I cannot agree man. The left may sometimes be guilty of calling people of faith dumb, but it is the LEADERS of the people of faith that struck first calling the left IMMORAL because they are liberal and are able to keep their political life SEPERATE from their religious life. Make no mistake, Falwell and Robertson tell their congregations that it is a SIN to vote for someone other than who they say. I am sorry but if you believe those clowns.....then you ARE DUMB and gullible. If the shoe fits, wear it.

Its fine if they care about religion. But they MUST accept that it is WRONG to try to make the tenets of their religion the law of the land. This is UNAMERICAN. This is what the religious right is trying to do.

You say: "If the Dems want to win an election any time soon the need to connect with middle America on a moral/spiritual level"

This is NOT what the government's job is. Even according to the strict constructionists. Politicians should worry about the quality of life on earth, not where your soul goes when you leave it. This is increasingly not becoming the case and this is a SERIOUS ****ing problem. The Christian right controlling the government is sending America toward a state based on Theology.

And what the hell is your problem with Howard Dean?

This is like the 80th godamn time I heard someone say. "Oh the left didn't respect people of faith" For ****'s sake, the government is not supposed to be about FAITH. Seperation of Church and State....HELLO? Does the constitution mean nothing anymore?

Anyone who thinks it is OK to IMPOSE a religious principle on a population knowing not everyone agrees with it.....
Anyone who VOTES the way their pastor, priest or televangelist tells them to.....
Anyone who demonizes someone with different values (this is what the religious right does, and THIS is worse than calling someone dumb).....

Deserves to be called dumb, sheep, gullible, easily led and whatever else they are called.

Only in America does religion play such a huge role in politics. Granted, they kill each other over in the Evil Empire over religion but Palestine is the exception. The USA's politicians are guilty of using religion as a crutch to sucker people for their votes. If they put as much effort into reducing the deficit and decreasing our dependency on oil (Haliburton and Dick Cheney would have a fit if that happened) as they do into this Jesus freak philosophy, America would be 10 times richer than it is now.

Dick

I am amazed that I am finding myself in agreement with you.

Ann Coulter says of the middle eastern people "We need to kill them all and convert them to Christianity". Her rationale is "People who believe like Jerry Falwell haven't flown a plane into a building".....ya know I can think of a few Abortion Clinic workers that may have something to say about that.

Good post. They will never learn, and they will continue to lose elections.

Im not saying that they are not dumb, but you need to be careful about calling people dumb who are merely stating their opinion.

What I am sayying is that the democrats need to bridge that morality/religion gap. If it seems like there is a clear cut choice between a Christian/moral man and a guy who supports partial birth abortion, then all the evangelicals will vote for the first guy. The democrats need to put up a candidate that is comparable to the Republican challenger in the moral/religion category and take that issue out of the election. If the Republicans dont have that, then it will force the country to vote on the real issues.

See I don't think they were ever called dumb for being Christians or stating THEIR opinions as such. What they were called DUMB for was NOT stating their opinions and instead believing EVERYTHING the Bush administration and the Christian right tells them just because they claim to be Christians.

Okay this I can agree with. But I still say that if Politicians have a say in what in anything Moral or spiritual, there is something really wrong. That is not their job.
