A student group at Roger Williams University is offering a new scholarship for which only white students are eligible, a move they say is designed to protest affirmative action.

The application for the $250 award requires an essay on "why you are proud of your white heritage" and a recent picture to "confirm whiteness."

"Evidence of bleaching will disqualify applicants," says the application, issued by the university's College Republicans.

Jason Mattera, 20, who is president of the College Republicans, said the group is parodying minority scholarships.

"We think that if you want to treat someone according to character and how well they achieve academically, then skin color shouldn't really be an option," he said. "Many people think that coming from a white background you're automatically privileged, you're automatically rich and your parents pay full tuition. That's just not the case."

The stunt has angered some at the university, but the administration is staying out of the fray. The school's provost said it is a student group's initiative and is not endorsed by Roger Williams.

Mattera, who is of Puerto Rican descent, is himself a recipient of a $5,000 scholarship open only to a minority group.

"No matter what my ethnicity is, I'm making a statement that scholarships should be given out based on merit and need," Mattera told the Providence Journal.

His group took out a full-page ad in last week's issue of the university's student newspaper to tout the scholarship, which was for $50 until two donors came forward to add $100 each during the weekend, Mattera said.

It's not the first brush with controversy for the group. The school temporarily froze the Republicans' money in the fall during a fight over a series of articles published in its monthly newsletter. One article alleged that a gay-rights group indoctrinates students into homosexual sex.

My husband, now 40, has experienced alot of racism in his lifetime. The first time was in Fort Worth, TX. He applied for a job at the Ft. Worth Fire Dept. and was turned down because he was a man and white. It happened again in PHX. Same reasons. Living in Imperial Valley, CA also allows you to experience racism, although much more subtley. It doesn't matter what your skin color is....it's the person inside that counts and I applaud this group that is making a statement. It's about time.

But to the thread, I always believed that it was incorrect. But my situation is different from others. From the time growing up, we saw no ethnic problem. We had, jews, thai, hawaiian, white, japanese, chinese, black and indian. We all grew up as one and had great childhood. Until you get older, you find out that in the continental US. there was prejudice. We all thought wtf? We all became adults and you see that there are many prejudice in scholarships and such. Our families paid for our tuition and we didnt have to rely on scholarships. However, many had altheltic scholarships and others had academic scholarships.

We didnt see it as racist because we all strived to achieve. We all chose different ways but the outcome was the same. We all got to college. We didnt rely on race or the color of our skin to get more on what we deserved. We all turned out good.

Heres how racism got me pissed. When I was 18 and voted for the presidency. The people at the voting establishment asked if I was Hawaiian. I said"yes". Then they handed me another voting ballot that was for the "office of hawaiian affairs". I told them(who were caucasian), "no thank you" and they told me that since I was Hawaiian, I need to vote for it. I smiled and replied" I am a United States Citizen and I just voted for my President, I dont believe in the OHA" and walked away. We all went there to vote, and my friends of different ethnic backgrounds asked me why didnt I vote for OHA. I replied, you folks should have voted too, you are as Hawaiian as I am. (we were all born in Hawaii).

So, to the scholarship question, skin color should never matter. The only thing that should matter is if you qualify and need it.

Others on this forum may have a different opinion, which is good. I just thought I would share with the global posters.

It shouldn't matter. But the fact is that there are scholarships based on race therefore having one for white people shouldn't matter.

Scholarships like this should be based on income, not on skin colour. That being said, there are A LOT more poor minorities than white people.

Also, espically for hispanics and blacks, its very difficult to reach the high levels of scocity and they are being screwed in two directions really. The rich (who are about 85-90% white) don't like letting in new comers. Also, what happens if you do rich that level were you are living in the burds with two cars and 500,000 dollar house?
