I read on the net that it's overrated and whatnot. I love the track. Everybody loved it when I was in middle school/high school.

Nas went hard. Great hook, lyrics, flow, and swag.

its a great song. :) ecspecially if your anti-Jay-Z.

I think even greater than the song was the statement they made by making peace. That was powerful....too bad Biggie and Pac couldn't have done the same thing.

Great track. Anybody who doesn't think so must be a Jay Z nuthugger!

How can Nas say Jay was killed by Eminem when he never did a track with him?

He's referring to Renegade a track from Jay's Blueprint album, where Em was the guest feature and basically out shined him on his own song.

Hence the "Eminem murdered you on your own ****" line.

I know about the Renegade track man... I was referring to Nas and how he never did a track with Eminem to my knowledge.

Not sure why they never hooked up on a track. Em did a track for Nas on God's son that was really ill. And Nas dropped a song for Em on the 8 mile soundtrack.

I doubt Nas was scared. Look at Nas history. This guy has been on tracks with fukin legends like Ghost, Rae, Rakim, Jay-Z, AZ, Jadakiss, etc.

and he got outshined by just about damn near all them...he admitted kool g rap outshined him on fast life, and AZ got him on almost every song they did with each other. Not that I really care, but thats something Jay-z could have used against him.

I do think Ether was overrated, most of what nas sad isnt true but he did have some good lines and overall it was a good diss. I think the biggest mistake jay-z made was when he acted all nervous and shook up after hearing it. He sounded like he was about to cry, and thats one of the biggest mistakes a rapper could make. Fortunately for him, he recovered. I guess he was hurt because he was a big fan of Nas but he shoulda just kept it real and said "ok, good diss. Now onto round 2."

I am not saying he was afraid, it is just a bit hypocritical to say "he killed you on a track" when him and Em never did a track together.

I agree, and if Nas was to rap on Renegades I doubt the outcome would be any different. What eminem did on that beat was just amazing. He raped jigga with no vaseline (no homo). His flow, his lyrics...wow. Thats all i can say. And Jay-z was no slouch himself on that, his verses were real nice and so was his flow. I dont think Nas could have done any better then Jay.

Jay did come hard on that track some could even say he had the better metaphors but flow and the rhyme schemes go to Em. "Ether" way they both blessed that track, while Nas listened in awe.

Not sure about that. Did you hear Nas on Verbal Intercourse? Black Republicans? I Do It For Hip Hop? His verse on Life's a ***** was ill too. NY State of Mind PT3? All opinions but Nas hasn't been outshined. People tend to give to much credit to AZ's verse.

I personally think Nas outshines a majority of the artists he collaborates with.

I partially agree, I dont actually think everyones outshined him. I shouldnt have said that, his verse on verbal intercourse was the best in my opinion.

I think its debatable everytime nas and jay-z do a song except black republicans, nas got him on that in my opinion. Nas always comes with the better lyrics, but jay-z has a better flow.

I do think that Nas has maybe only outshined AZ once or twice, but AZ just about always sounds better. On ny state of mind pt 3, thats real tough to choose. They both came correct on thtat.

That Nas verse on that Rakim joint was crazy.

If you knew my streets
You would know all everybody talk about is who got beef
Who snitchin, who told police
Who came home, who still gone, who restin in peace
Now they killin over music money, not drugs, rap replaced it
Cause thugs with no brains got no patience
New jacks I pistol whip 'em with the funky rhythm I be kickin
Musician and flatten composition
Of pain, I'm like Saddam Hussein
Still alive lookin at his dead children's burnt remains
I burnt the game, learnt you lames a new lesson
Your crew's soft man, ya'll need some new weapons
The P's breed Warriorz in skullies and timmies
Around micks, spics, *****s and guineas
For my ghetto kings in deep thought we don't blink
But don't think we wastin our time
It's a New York state of mind

Rakim
I'm from the home of a million legends and trend settin
A lot of footsteps to follow, I've been steppin
Mind stressin tryin to find direction, crime shreddin
Time precious, I ain't have rest since 9/11
I live fast, hustle like today's my last
I get cash, the struggle's like a day on the Ave.
Crack, D and raw, gats squeezin off
Manhattan streets in awe from casualties of war
The eve of the Apocalypse, evil people in politics
Every block is at risk, the metropolitan metropolis
The opposite of Liza Minelli and Frank Sinatra
Alicia Keys, Nas and Ra the gangsta's opera
So New York City walk with me, talk gritty
It's up to us New York it's our city
Here the man come with the anthem, hands up
It's time the thrill is back New York, let's stand up

Good job Gold Mac on your explanation of ether. I hate it when people say Jay cried, he didn't cry, he was just shook up. Perhaps he came close, which is embaressing because of his image. But people that say he cried, thats not true.

As great as Nas is, I think many occassions AZ did a little better than him in collabs. It doesn't really matter though. Although I'm a believer that AZ should be rated a little bit higher in all time lists.

To me where Jay lost was Ether. But also how he handled the whole thing. He was a Nas fan obviously. Which is no problem. But he basically ignited the beef so that he could go head up with Nas. And then he made the mistake of directing only one verse towards Nas on Takeover. It was a good verse but also filled with false statements as Ether was.

Then he dropped Super Ugly. Really a good diss but went foul on the whole condom baby seat thing. I thought that took it too far just a bit. Now you may recall Pac pulling the same thing. But he kept it on the I ****ed your ***** tip. If Jay really left a condom on the baby seat that's sick. And it's damn right unsanitary lmao.

Then you got the Blueprint 2 diss. Good song really but then he admitted he lost in the song. I think he overdid it a bit. If you call Game out for droppin multiple disses (even though it's a bout a million more than Jay lmao) then you would certainly have to call out Jay.

All in all though I listen to Jay's music though.

i don't think the babys mama diss was over the line in a rap battle. Nas called him every name in the book, even said I'll put you a pine box from 9 shots fella. The bottomline is they made peace and its over. I don't even like talking about this **** from 10 years ago.

Well hey, I mean do you think I would ever make a song like that? No way. I'm not that kind of guy. I would never say anything like that, but in the culture of rap that is immoral. You know what I'm saying? Its like anything goes for the most part. So from a real life perspective, of course I don't like it. But from perspective, I don't blame Jay for doing it because he was desperate in the battle.

I agree with you. Anything does go in rap. It's like a no holds barred WWE match.

I do miss the times when beef/battles were relevant. It's why I feel part of Hip Hop is dead.

Yeah some beefs are great. sorry for saying this wasn't worth talking about, it just sometimes I get tired of the Nas vs. Jay discussions. But this thread has been reasonable which is good.
