VERSATILE2K12 02-03-2009, 12:00 AM 3/10. I'm just not feeling the album, but that song "One time for your mind" I loved. The rest it just seems like the same ol' stuff, no change up, with that one song I mentioned it goes with what he's saying, it has a good beat that compliments what he's saying.

I listened to the cd fully. I just wasn't feeling it, it was boring and very dull besides that one song. Lyrical? VERY, but no true emotion, just words that he spit out that sounded good.

Thats the best rap album I've ever heard.
But hey like I said, everybody hears things differently.

nah , you might, but i was born into the west coast sound, i was listening to gangster rap due to i was rased in gang territory all my live, lived in the projects my whole life(Aliso Village Projects- torn down from pathetic conditions and gangland territory to about 15 warring gangs in those projects territory)now live in MarVista Gardens projects, nicer projects but their is a gang war between blacks and hispanics right now, raised into gangster rap, i hate gangs, but when i was younger i was kinda interested since much of my family was gang related, that is why i probably relate to gangster rap, have nothing in common with poetic wannabe rappers like nas, i dont even like rap anymore , its just gotten so corny that even lil wayne is now a rap force,
rock is the best music, when tupac and biggie died, rap has slowly gone to a downward spiral, the best rappers are currently acting or semi retired or retired or even dead

No, it’s a prime example that music is purely subjective.

im not talking about a 2 rival gangs, around 15, in Aliso Village Projects(hailed in Los Angeles Magzine , most dangerous projects in Cali, the place where white media and everyone else calls Gang Capital of the world)
Imaginne this , in the middle of the 10s of blocks of this same projects is a school with fences, children in the other side of these projects would die on a messed up basis, due to gangs on each side had to shoot across the school to shoot a rival gang territory, if you cross one block walking, you may get shot by being mistaken to a ****** ass gang member, blacks , whites and any race got forced out due to their ****ty gang ****, 2 cousins mine died in those projects and my sister got shot their, nearly died,
i listened to gangster rap as a dumb naive kid cause i could relate to the bull**** they said, that being said, **** gangster rap, **** rap, the best rap is just real rappers that talk about real ****, example, like immortal technique or 2 pac,
No, it’s a prime example that music is purely subjective.
Music is only partially subjective.
CRESCENDOPOWER 02-03-2009, 01:52 AM Music is only partially subjective.
I'll correct that for you. You mean totally not partially.
I'll correct that for you. You mean totally not partially.
Example.
Notes exist in music. A singer either hits a note or they don't. It is not subjective, it can be measured by instruments. If a singer is good at hitting notes we say they are a good singer. That is not subjective. We can do the same thing for non-human things like guitars. If a guitar is off key it is a fact, not an opinion.
I'm tired of hearing these feminine arguments (No offence Megstarr lol) for everything being subjective.

This has got to be the most juvenile response I have ever read, and you are trying way to hard to prove that you are right, by going off on a different tangent about mistakes being made by human errors in music. This has absolutely nothing to do with what we are talking about and you know it.
Something that is judged solely on an emotional response of an individual can not be objective.
If a singer is good at hitting notes we say they are a good singer. That is not subjective.
LOL, so the only criteria for being a good singer is hitting notes correctly?

Floyd Sinclair 02-03-2009, 10:39 AM I listened to Illmatic last night and I gotta agree with the first couple of posts. The CD really failed when it comes to withstanding the test of time. The beats sound like they were poorly mixed, and they just...didnt keep me interested.
Lyrically, Nas was average at best. At times, he dropped some nice lines but he failed to stay consistent through out a verse. Illmatic is really overrated.
Illmatic = 2.5/10
RL_GMA 02-03-2009, 10:47 AM There's certain albums in Hip Hop that are just called classics off GP. Illmatic is definitely one of those albums.
Now being that some of the kids on here who don't like Illmatic were about 4 when Illmatic first came out (which ironically was on my birthday lol) I can understand how some of them may not be moved by it being they came up on the DMXs, Jay Z's, Master P, early Cash Money, etc.
Illmatic is an album that became a classic over time and really changed the way albums from then on were made. You had an all star production crew of DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Q-Tip, LES, and Large Professor. To this day there hasn't been an album that all the different producers were able to capture the same vibe but still be able to stand alone from the other songs on the album.
Though I HEAVILY disagree with giving Illmatic a 3/10, It's still heralded in Hip Hop as one of the best if not THE best Hip Hop album of all time.

That's false homie...
Nobody since maybe Jay has made an album like Illmatic where it stands on a pedestal in achieving greatness an artist. You ask any "real" hip hop artist about Illmatic and 9 times out of 10 you'll get the word...CLASSIC
Of course we're in 2009 now and that album was made in '92-94 so of course the beat styles are different, rhyme styles are different...but without question it stands the test of time considering its the album every hip hop artist strives to make in their career.
I'm sure in 20 years when kids talk about how wack DMX is you'll have a similar opinion :fing02:
Kobe Bryant 02-03-2009, 11:19 AM Yeah he jsut spit words sure. No emotion right? Did you listen to the deep story he spit on One Love? The realism of life he dropped in Life's A *****? What about the rawness of NY State of Mind Pt. 1? You didn't listen to it good enough.
And you probably had biased against him before you put it on. This thread is a joke and bait. No way is Illmatice a 3/10. That had me rollin.

Yea like One Love is an amazing song. That's why when I read the thread Im like, "Did ya'll REALLY listen to this album?"
AZ had possibly one of the illest verses of the 90s on Life's a *****. That verse made him a household name in Hip Hop.
And ****...I wasn't born in NY, but when I heard NY State of Mind, Nas took me to Queensbridge, to Brooklyn, to the BX and then eventually when i was living there for a while I understood everything.

And I like Verse, but that excuse doesn't cut it.
-Antonio- 02-03-2009, 02:15 PM The production still sounds fresh to me. It Aint Hard To Tell will never sound dated to me. It's just a different type of production. N.Y. State of Mind is as raw of a beat as you will hear, and it matches the song perfectly.

So it is not only your philosophy of music that's feminine it's your approach to debate as well.
I gave you nothing but logical analysis and instead of offering a rebuttal you menstrated all over the thread.
You said music was ENTIRELY subjective. I even ceded that it was PARTIALLY subjective and you still had to keep going, so I offered you a simple lesson in why music was not ENTIRELY subjective, period. If you do not mean the words that you are using then you shouldn't use them, especially when you are using them in the context of "correcting" someone.
By the way, missing or hitting notes is not a matter of "mistake" it is a matter of skill. So is riding a beat by the way. Art is using talent and skill to convey emotion and ideas, it is not just conveying emotions and ideas.
That is why if all you can do is draw stick figures you are not a good sketch artist no matter how emotional you are about what you are drawing, and it is not "subjective".

Your original post discussing the hitting or missing of notes is the first and only response discussing the subject, and you know that we are talking about the comparison, and contrasting of artists. You are making a weak attempt to try and prove that you are right by twisting/changing the subject matter at hand. You are clearly wrong.
mic573 02-03-2009, 08:20 PM I like Nas and Illmatic is a nice album but to me it isn't the greatest album ever made as most say it is. To be honest I think alot of people rate it so high because other people rate it so high. It's just like anything else. A few people say it's the greatest of all time and then other people let that influence thier opinion of the album.
There are alot of other albums that I would put in my cd player over Illmatic.

i respectfully disagree, i think Illmatic is all-around a better album than I Am, although lyrically, I would understand if you think I Am being better. same **** just a different day. its an obseession with vers some might say its his advocacy.
Haha, no obsession, Nas has those 5 songs I mentioned as my top 50 ever. Just the rest of his **** I don't feel. I think Nas is alright, no hate.
Raphael 02-03-2009, 09:45 PM I never listened to Illmatic. Its too far before my time. BTW i wasnt really born in 2001, Im 15 years old. I dont really like Nas. His music is for older people. Maybe Ill like him more when Im older. lol!!
Tha_Greatest 02-03-2009, 09:46 PM i respectfully disagree, i think Illmatic is all-around a better album than I Am, although lyrically, I would understand if you think I Am being better. Production wise, it's no contest really, Illmatic has better beats no question. Pete Rock, DJ Premier and Large Professor drop GEMS on Illmatic, where I Am is just solid not great.
their you go, nas does have great lyrics
i cant remember what album these lines he used:
im kinda like a prophet and youre the oppisite,
those were lyrics where i was was like **** man, :hail:Nas is a legend but Illmatic to me was his showcase to his potential which was given out and delivered in I Am, lyrically illmatic was great but to make a true classic, production has to be great as well(ex., The 36 Chambers, Doggystyle, The Chronic) Nobody can debate those are Hip Hop masterpieces but as you see with Illmatic, Many than its fair share of Hip Hop fans give it a 3 outta 10 rating, Illmatic is a east coast classic that can only be felt by east coast fan mostly
36 chambers and Doggystyle is felt by everyone and their moms
VERSATILE2K12 02-03-2009, 09:47 PM I respect all you guys opinions, but I don't try to shove Weezy in your face and tell you you're stupid for not liking him. I know a LOT of ppl that don't like Nas. I mean not like one song! It's just something I would have to feel myself, I don't get that with a majority of his work, he makes me sleepy(LITERALLY)
When I was listening to it the other day I tried hard to not lose focus and listen. I only took a 5min break from listening cause I had to do something. Nas is just not my type of rapper.

That's because the beats and lyrics aren't as dense as Illmatic. You could listen to Doggystyle once and youll like it right away. I will admit that I didn't really like Illmatic on my first time listening to it, but it gets better with every play.

I was in NY when Illmatic was about to drop and the buzz was ****in insane. Half Time had dropped a year before and It Aint Hard to Tell had just dropped a little before the album dropped and Hot 97 was killin it.
I mean at the time when Illmatic came out, you had Black Moon, KRS's Boom Bap album, Tribe's Midnight Marauders, and many others. Illmatic was THAT album that made dudes go back in the lab and re-record their albums.

you can do that with any c.d, any album, man , i heard so much music by everyone and every genre that i wind up liking it because the the dense sound got recorded in my head after every play, i can say that with a Shaq c.d, if i hear it enough times, the music will be recorded in my memory, it doesnt mean i like it, its just i grew into it
Shaq is no nas ,by the way
MetalVomit 02-03-2009, 10:30 PM I for one, think that God's Son and Stillmatic are on the same level as Illmatic. The GOAT hip hop album, IMO, comes down to "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx", "III:Temples of Boom", "Liquid Swords", "Operation Doomsday", those are probably my top 4 best quality albums. Production-wise, the beats are ****ing flawless, and lyrically, Rae,Gza+their Wu guests, B-Real and MF DOOM lyrically destroy the entire albums.

I love stillmatic and gods son.
and i think stillmatic is a classic for sure. i think god son is also a possible classic.
but how are either on the same level as illmatic?
This is an album that ALL hip hop artist new and old refer to as a classic, and one that change the current face of hip hop. I remember a B.G. (HotBoyz) in an interview and he talked about how this album represented how he felt (referring to Life's B$(@$).
This album has been sampled, duplicated (attempted), and re-distributed. Nas is one of the most bitten rappers of all time. This album had so many flavors and verses its unreal.
My point is that this album is to hip hop as Miles Davis's 'So What' is to Jazz.
VERSATILE2K12 02-04-2009, 12:27 AM Biggie over Nas all day and night.

I meant over Illmatic, sorry for not elaborating...
Your original post discussing the hitting or missing of notes is the first and only response discussing the subject, and you know that we are talking about the comparison, and contrasting of artists. You are making a weak attempt to try and prove that you are right by twisting/changing the subject matter at hand. You are clearly wrong.
I guess I can't expect proof or arguments from a guy that believes that everything is relative huh? lol
You made a false statement about the nature of music in general and I just called you on it. You haven't done a single thing to knock down my definition of art that shows that art is not entirely relative. I repeat, art is not simply conveying emotion and ideas, it is using talent and skill to convey emotion and ideas.
none taken. respects for being all sensitive to my feelings n **** though.
how feminine of you...
haha
just kidding.
.......lol
MegStarr* 02-04-2009, 01:06 AM I meant over Illmatic, sorry for not elaborating...
that's still pretty irrelevant. it was just a really random statement.
