View Full Version : Why has Amir gone from fighting bums to future ATGs?
Oriachim 01-25-2009, 05:30 PM I don't know who said it but it got me thinking... Frank Warrens gets 5 decent british prospects, he can make amazing money on them... Now this Barrera fight is a hit or miss, if he wins he gets the jackpots, if he loses... oh well, 5 prospects he can over-hype including James DeGale, the gold olympic champion.
Thoughts?
Kid McCoy 01-25-2009, 05:36 PM Barrera might be an all-time great, but he's also a featherweight who Khan has substantial physical advantages over. He's years past his prime too with a million wars behind him, so it's questionable how much he has left.
I see it as a smart move by Warren. If Khan wins, he's beaten a boxing legend. If he loses, he's lost to a boxing legend, so not much disgrace there, and as you say, he now has the new crop of Olympians to fall back on anyway.

That about covers it. Warren only cares about where his next quid is coming from. If Khan loses he will be pushed aside for the next lot of talented prospects to be milked and ruined.
thedon2006 01-25-2009, 08:43 PM The new Olympic hopefuls won't make the same amount of money Khan makes for Warren.

Not right away they won't but given Warren's flair for hype, they can be headlining a PPV in a non title fight against a school teacher in a couple of years. The UK public in general is obsessed with celebrity and will buy into anyone and anything with some carefully planned publicity. Warren knows this and has such disregard for boxing that he's more than happy to serve up mismatch after mismatch.
The RealDeal 01-25-2009, 09:52 PM It's just typical Wank Warren hype.

that is exactly it... the british public is something.
Jeups 01-26-2009, 08:00 AM Cant see Khan doing this. Goin from havin his chin exposed by a nobody columbian, to fighting a P.E teacher who broke an ankle during the fight, to fighting a seasoned vet like Barrera. As much as i have faith in Freddie Roach as a trainer you cant train a glass jaw! Bad decision on Khans part, he`ll be exposed and loose all credability.
The RealDeal 01-26-2009, 08:39 AM The more I think about it the more I believe Khan will get murdered.
Abstraction 01-26-2009, 11:34 AM I would like to see Khan win, but Barrera is going favourite imo.
He may be on the decline, but Khan is no where near his peak even.
The RealDeal 01-26-2009, 02:51 PM I wonder how many folk will turn out for this or pay the PPV.
southpaw_07 01-26-2009, 03:28 PM Well, well guys you never know. These are the days of surprises.
In my opinion, Amir had a terrible style of fighting before, throwing his punches and leaving himself wide open for counter punches , check out some of his fights and you know what i am talking about.
F.Roach can add a lot of defensive skills to his arsenal and i know perfectly well who barrera is but i wouldn't bet on barrera this time.
I go for Amir in this fight and look forward to bump this post after the fight to tell everyone; What did I say !! :loser: I think its a fight that they will talk about for quite some time:lurk: thats how good of a performance you will se from Amir, believe it or not

Quite many as Enzo M. will fight the same night on the under card
cueball66 01-28-2009, 09:01 AM IMO barrera aint shot! he aint at his peak! but mosely wasnt at his peak when he beat margarito! hopkins wasnt at his peak when he beat pavlik! etc!!...
if kahn can pull this off then it is a VERY respectable win!
IMO if kahn stays behind his lightning quck jab("fastest hands ever faced"(pacquio) i predict kahn ud!
although having watched barreras last three fights(all within lAST 2 years) barrera aint no mug!
great fight!! frank warren is a genius!
hopkins was 42/3 when he beat pavlik!, moseley was 37 when he beat margarito! ,.... chad dawson has only beat a 40+ johnson & a 40yo tarver and the "experts" reckon he is a p4p top ten!!!?(lmao!)
Testdead 01-31-2009, 05:19 PM I did say it would be a faded Featherweight.
Just not Barrera.
Joe2608 01-31-2009, 06:03 PM I originally picked Barrera by murder, but then i saw his last fight and he looked really bad against Ventura so i wouldn't be surprised if Khan pulls it off.

warren wouldnt have picked MAB if he thought khan was gonna lose, theres got to be an angle somewhere
ellwise69 02-02-2009, 09:03 AM khan by mid to late stoppage.

barrera didn`t look bad against ventura IMO, he handled him easily enough! i think he was jst toying with him for a couple of rounds then in rnd 3 he started to open up and finished him off in rnd4.
i know its hard to judge him against this level of opposition but he certainly didnt look bad!
to answer the original question of this thread, four words.. frank warren..& don king!
i wonder what don king`s getting out of all this?
no doubt he`ll have option on kahn if he wins?
nate campbells also signed to don king!
if khan pulls this off i can see him being thrown in with campbell for a title shot!!
Testdead 02-08-2009, 09:17 AM I think Khan stops Barrera late. Khan is just too big and too fast.
Barrera 5yrs ago its a different story.
With Khans chin you never know but..................................
theboymartay 02-09-2009, 09:23 AM If Khan sticks to his game plan and boxes and moves he will beat MAB by UD.
He is a huge lightweight and I dont think MAD has much left in the tank and is here for the money. MAB will have his moments and I wouldnt be surprised to see Khans ass hitting the deck.
Khan unfortunately still punches like an amaeter a lot the time and doesnt really sit on his punches or by rushing in smothers his own work. MAB will look to counter punch and give that chin a check which I imagine if he can weather the first 4 rounds he will get plently of opportunity to do so.
I can see Khan coming through it but not without scares. Will I be paying 19.95 to watch it? No..........well maybe............ I just find it a little galling that Khan is PPV when he isnt even the best fighter in britain! Warren risks alienating him from the british fans. I would PPV for him fighting some like murray or Thaxton as at least there is British pride at stake as well as a title!
streak12 02-10-2009, 11:36 AM I reckon Khan's backers have messed up here...first, they pressure Frank Warren into a bigger contract, to do that Warren needed to put Khan's fights on PPV. Problem is, now a lot of fans are wanting him to step up. They also fired his previous trainer, and hired Rubio, not getting Warren's opinion on this. Rubio then recommended Bredis Prescott (his relative). He then got KO'ed very badly (notice Warren not really bothered at the fight). Decent comeback fight (I thought), and now Barrera, who is past his best, still a big name, and smaller too. Worth a gamble, and it will bring in PPV, which is what Warren really wants. I think that Khan isn't really elite level, he has speed, and could develop with skills, but he cannot hold a shot, which ain't good.
hookoutofhell 02-13-2009, 07:01 AM i think warren knows that khan is a good fighter but he'll never be at the level of calzaghe or hatton, because of his chin warren has thought to himself why not just throw him to the lions and see whats what, its good for us becaue it means we're actually going to see him in a couple of meaningful fights.
besides the fact that hes on sky PPV (normally oreserved for champions) means that he needs a big name. MAB fits the bill plus hes a FW and not a real lightweight puncher so who knows if khan tastes the canvas he'll be able to get back up, hes had alot of wars and although hes dangerous and crafty hes never come across someone with khans power.
