I read cuban three times olympic champion Felix Savon used to hit the walls in a way of training to make his knuckles stronger (to hit harder i suppose). Is it true that is that effective or was just a lie from a journalist? Not that i would do it, i just want to know if it's true.

It is true, that is why my knuckles are so powerful that only a fool would want to get hit by them

Martial arts people uses this method to strengthen knuckles yes... A guy i know a 2nd dan black belt expert showed me his knuckles it was gross... he had like 3 layers of bone over his knuckles for like protection.

idk about making them stronger but it will definetly flatten your knuckles out

Hitting the wall will, over time, and with decent punches, strengthen your knuckles. Your body learns that this area is under constant strain and will send calcium deposits in order to protect it. Essentially, it makes the bone denser and thus stronger. The same kind of thing can happen anywhere in your body where it's under strain, for example, those who do a lot of heavy weights for a long period of time have the same effect on whichever body part.

However brilliant and clever this is, it's quite pointless in boxing. This process will naturally take place to whatever extent, if at all, as you train for boxing. If your knuckles need more calcium deposits because of boxing, which is unlikely, your body will send them, when it no longer needs them, it wont anymore. Thing is, with hand wraps and gloves on, if you're knuckles generally hurt to the point that you need to strengthen them you've either got ****ed knuckles or you're doing something wrong.

You're not supposed to hit directly on the wall lol, ofcourse it will break your hand

put a newspaper or two inbetween and hit for 1-2 hours a day

I use to hit things a lot when I was a kid, my knuckles are real tough now, but it's probably because I bruised or fractured them so much they healed back stronger. I wouldn't recommend it though, when you get older it may effect you.

it'll send calcium deposits to the knuckles and make them stronger. I suppose hitting a wall would be like hitting a really heavy, immovable heavybag in terms of making your punches harder but you'll never really be able to punch a hard wall all out without breaking your hand or the wall (ala drywall). It would eventually let you hit somebody ungloved harder without having to worry about it hurting as much.

hitting anything without proper wraps isnt smart. it may add strength in some areas, but itll do one thing also... cause damage, perminent possibly..

i punched many walls, and holes in walls, and its only done bad bad things for my hand and wrists. hands are valuable, wrists as well, dont risk ****in them up

thats dumb

hitting walls is an incredibly stupid training. it is documented of having given people severe arthritis and nerve damage.

proper conditioning takes time, but will not deform your hands. proper conditioning leaves your hands looking normal, except the gradually become extremely strong over years. actually, it doesnt take very long for your hands to increase in durability.

in proper conditioning, you start by hitting, very gently, onto bags specifically prepared for conditioning. the early levels generally use mung bean as a filler. some traditions include specific medecinal herbs inside the conditioning bag. also, there is a medicinal liquid that you have to soak your hands in after the practice.

another important point, is that u never want to try to hit the bag very hard. you let your hand fall onto it using only gravity.

the iron hand conditioning is not a myth. just many people do not know of the practice. and, any proper practice of it will not affect the way your hands look or give u health problems.

that is one way.

kostya tszyu swears by the practice and has mentioned practicing iron fist for over 7 years.

only practice if u have been taught by a knowledgeable teacher.

This.

It will shorten your career if you intend to be a pro boxer, and if you don't intend to be a pro boxer it will damage your hands for no good reason.

Plus in the time where your hands need to recover, you miss out on training which will hurt you more in the long run as your skills will not progress.

My brother's a street fighter & boxer/trainer.
He's got brick fists.
But they were developed over time.
He used this alot:

..punched the bag with no gloves, and had so many street fights he eventually built callouses.

I don't know if hitting a wall is the best thing to do, but I know hitting anything hard without gloves worked for my brother.

Hiting walls is nothing you should start out with.
Like J said you can use the chinese bags. The Kung Fu Liniment is very importent for your hands to recover. There are a lot of recipiese for those liniments and ointments. If you have no chinese drugstore around or don't care about making your own, you can just order stuff like "Dit Da Jow Wing Lam", or "Dit Da Jow" etc.
Besides bags and makiwaras there are those bags that hang on walls used in wing chun. I like more conditioning on trees but I rather do palmstrikes. If you do palmstrikes on walls the house will start to shake and your neighbors will think there was an earthquake. But if you want to condition your knuckles than use trees with a softertrunk or use a phonebook inbetween. After some time start removing pages from the phonebook until you reach the trunk of the tree by that time your knuckles should be conditioned well. Also don`t forget to drink sojamilk after training for the calcium supply to your body.

The psycho in the korean movie old boy also does it in his cell.

Some real martial artist who are known to have done training like that are the last real ninja TO****SUGU TAKAMATSU (1889 - 1972) and the founder of Kyokushin Karate Masutatsu Oyama (1923 - 1994).

Hand of Takumatsu:

Hand of Mas Oyama ( I think?):

Hands of Mas Oyama (for sure):

Nowadays you should realy reconsider, if you want your hands to look like that? Your girlfriend might not like it...Or it could be a problem typing on your PC...or your boss might not like it...
