For any true MMA fan the signing of Mauricio Shogun Rua to UFC was earth shattering. Aside from a bs loss to Coleman he ran through the 205 division with wins over Lil Nog, Arona, and the red hot Overeem.

However he got owned by Forrest Griffin and looked terrible in the fight.

He was one of the top of the division in Pride but the track record isnt lookin good, Cro Cop was tops in the division and is completely shot, Takanori Gomi is stinkin up the joint as well and even Big Nog looks done.

Is Shogun done? He's up against Coleman who he should beat but with the soccer kicks and head stomps taken away from him can he hang with the top 205ers? With the ability to use elbows given to Coleman now can Rua even get the past hammer? While ill bet points on Rua over Coleman, I just think he gonna fizzle out like alot of the former Pride stars, he never really looks in shape and his stomps and kicks are taken from him. I hope im wrong but I get the feeling he might be done

YUHHHHHHH!

Didn't Shogun have a torn ACL and virtually no cardio training for that fight with Forrest? The guy will wreck many more fighters to come.

Without the stomps the last bunch of Chute Boxe fighters coming from PRIDE haven't failed well in the USA. Murilo has got progressively worse than he was already getting near the end of his PRIDE run. Wanderlei is slowly becoming like Chuck and vice-versa with their inability to be able to improve anything nowadays. And Shogun just got outworked by Griffin plain and simple.

His injury came after the fight while training for Chuck at UFC 85. He may have hurt himself or got a little boo boo in training but no more so than any other fighter who trains on a daily basis. And even if it was an injury that hampered him then he ain't that tough in comparison to other fighters. I mean Anderson Silva had been just 10 weeks out of surgery on both of his knees when he fought Travis Lutter and won, and even Forrest Griffin himself had his arm broken in a match and went on to KO the guy with his other arm.

I don't think Shogun is done. But he has some major adjustments to make. The thing about Shogun is that he isn't the beast he is made out to be through highlight videos on youtube. He has glaring weaknesses that can easily be exposed by the top line fighters in the UFC.

For one his BJJ isn't the best, and with some of the animals at 205 whose wrestling is top-shelf and have good sub defense he is gonna have problems.

His striking is still wild with horrible technique. He got by in PRIDE by having opponents who would engage him in those exchanges, but he didn't always come up trumps and more often than not took the fights to the ground. The best example being against Diabate who was whooping him with his Muay Thai striking which forced Rua to take it to the ground, and then when he couldn't submit the guy, out came the stomps.

He certainly needs to pace himself. That bullrush technique may have worked in PRIDE but it's not gonna fly in the UFC. The guys in that division know all about Shogun believe me, it's not like he was a big secret to any of the 205lb fighters now is it. Thy know full well that if you let the guy blow his wad early then he's yours for the taking a la Forrest Griffin.

Hopefully he returns to the path to glory with this upcoming rematch against Coleman.

Just a wake up call. He hasn't been in many wars (if any) and still has many years left in the sport. His nerves got to him. Don't underestimate him from one loss, every fighter has a bad night. He has had plenty of time to rest his mind and body. A fight with Coleman is a perfect return as Coleman is past his prime, if he ever had a prime? :buttkick:

I sorta agree, Shogun is a beast trust me and the technique is terrible but it is effective and will work on the 205ers in UFC as all there technique kinda sucks, but he does have some weaknesses and he just doesnt seem to want it anymore when I look at his interviews, its a shame he was an animal he really needs to get his head together

Coleman def had a prime, although second teir comp early on, winning the UFC tournys with little rules and hardly any rest is still a feat to pull off and he duplicated in Japan winning the Pride Grand Prix, if he could smarten up like Ken Shamrock did with some submission defense he coulda really blow people out of the water

I hope he isn't. But I honestly don't see him doing well in the division even at 100%. He's a small LHW, and the rules don't really fit him.

I don't see him beating Evans, Rampage, Lyoto, etc...

(Yes, I'm aware he beat Rampage already).

If he returns to form he can beat a lot of those guys in my opinion. A lot is made of the stomps and kicks but a lot of his wins have come from his fists like his ko over Overeem and Rampage. Unless his chin has fallen, I dont see his losing to Evans unless Evans has submissions now, I think he'd destroy Rampage's legs until he catchs a clinch and as far as Lyoto, no one can beat their opponent if they fall asleep the minute they see them

The win against Rampage was due to knees and soccer kicks coupled with the fact that Rampage had broken a rib. And most of those wins where punches have been the determining factor a few and far between, plus what you forget is that it was 9 out of 10 times set up by stomps which he used has his favourite technique to pass the guard. Doing that didn't sap you of your energy like it would having to lie in someones guard and work to pass, which is what Forrest made Shogun do the whole 3 rounds of their fight.

Like I said he isn't done IMO, but he has more adjustments to make. He's technique in striking needs some refining and his BJJ needs work on. It wasn't good to start with and with the guys i the UFC 205 division he's not gonna find it easy, especially against the wrestlers like Rashad who would just take him down at will.
