Nog was named interim champion when Couture went on his little vacation from the UFC. I don't think the UFC wanted to stripped the title away from Couture because they still wanted him to fight for the organization despite both arguing with each other. You are all wrong, an Interim Champion is named in absence of the Champion/If the Champion is not able to defend his title. Nogueira became the Interim Champion while Couture was absent from the UFC. They decided not to strip Couture of his title because they could hand Brock Lesnar the title easier that way, along with making more money. Now we have Frank Mir as the "Interim Champion" and Brock Lesnar as the "Heavyweight Champion." Soon they will fight in a unification bout to get rid of this, and Frank Mir will be the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion.
