View Full Version : Getting rocked?
g0tcha 12-27-2008, 05:05 PM this is for those that have sparred before and have taken a hit. i was wondering if any of you have experienced this while sparring. i got caught with a decent clean hit just above my forehead and it wasnt that bad of a hit so when i saw it coming i braced myself to take it. after that i was thinking ok not so bad now look up to counter/fight back. for some reason for like 1-2 seconds while my eyes were squinting it felt like that same feeling when you get water in your eyes where there is pressure from the water pushing against your eye lids. at the same time i was telling myself to open them because i needed to see if someting was comming but i felt frozen and tried to force my eyes open but couldnt for those 1-2 seconds. any input? thanks.
ScottDBA 12-27-2008, 05:26 PM Only time I've been rocked was from a right hook by one of my coaches who is 30lbs heavier than me. Didn't make my legs limp or anything, just a bright flash in my left eye and then everything looked dark and fuzzy for a couple seconds. No feeling of pressure on my eye lids, but I guess it may be different for each person, or depending on where you get hit.
Napalm Death 12-27-2008, 05:31 PM Ive been rocked a number of times because of my ****ty defence but ive been able to weather the storm.
The best thing to do is keep away from your opponent and try not to get bullied into the corner. look for the counter until your feeling confident to get back to putting pressure onto the other guy.
When i first got rocked i was getting batterd against the roped like tommy morrison against ray mercer.
quincy_madskull 12-27-2008, 05:42 PM i got caught with a good left hook, i didn't lose my footing or anything like that, but my hearing got insanely muffled for about two seconds and all i could hear was this high pitched ring.
KostyaTszyu44 12-27-2008, 05:52 PM ive been hit by really hard shots a few times (probably 6-7 times) , and had the ringing in my ears/slight headache after but my legs never moved at all, and it was only from really good shots that caught me on the temple, all from bigger guys so i think my chin is pretty good
and ive never been hurt in a fight, although in my last one i walked into a looping right hook that snapped my head back and made everyone go "ooh" but i wasnt dazed at all and countered immediately
some people i have seen get wobbled (eyes blank legs wobbly) damn near every time they spar or fight

hehe, same kinda thing happened in my last fight. I was fighting a guy from the club that was putting on the show, so the crowd was behind him. He landed a couple shots that snapped my head back/around. I took them with no effect and was fine, but the crowd still cheered as if I was on the verge of being knocked out.
In the first 20 seconds of the fight I hit him with a right hand that wobbled his legs and made him grab on to me which got him an eight count, and the crowd was totally silent. lol.

Similar experience, except I saw a purple flash in both eyes. I don't know what I was hit with. I never bothered to ask. I didn't see darkness just the flash of purple. My trainer stopped the sparring to see if I was okay so I am assuming it looked pretty bad.
The guy was a good 40lb more than me and immediately apologized after he hit me.
I am assuming it must have been a right uppercut.
After that I decided I should learn some better defense. This was when I had been in the gym for like 4 months.
g0tcha 12-27-2008, 07:26 PM hmm myabe different for everyone then heh. yeah he naturally outweighs me by 20ish lbs. it was a hit just above my forehead. maybe just the impact stunned me and thats why i couldnt force my eyes open for that split second. aside from that it was all fun heh. he's still a beginner even though he trained for a year at an mma school in kickboxing and bjj just because he hasnt trained in a year lol and on top of that i think he never really trained straight up boxing. im probably just above a beginners level so any sparring is fun and a learning exp since there arent any close by gyms around here that teach straight boxing. the only thing that sucked was that fact that he was southpaw+ being a beginnerish at boxing he kept stepping on my foot even though i told me to stop to his right when he steps in to jab but oh well heh. interesting sparring a southpaw though. didnt get to through my hook/45 to his body cuz id be open for his right hook.
Chr0nic 12-27-2008, 07:27 PM i got rocked by a right hook, followed by a left hand and right hand on the jaw
i was'nt hurt or nothin, but i consider it being rocked cuz my hands went down slightly and i could'nt move and i felt weak on my legs
but i did'nt go down course :cool2:
JayCoe 12-27-2008, 09:43 PM Took a massive right from a heavyweight pro' coach (i'm a welterweight), he said after he shouldn't have thrown it that hard, that stunned me, only for like half a second but you know when you get hit and you just stop for some reason and go "oo". I take pride from it because it didn't bother me after the initial impact and I surprised my other coach by saying let's finish the round.
I remember another time, it didn't stun me or rock me or anything but it did take my mind off the fight. So i'm sparring, everything's going well, and I take a shot which you to be honest when sparring doesn't really register, but then there's this immense lingering pain and my brain instantly goes "what the **** is that?", and I continue to fight but then it must have been a good 1-2 seconds before I realised he straight righted me in the ****ing neck! Luckily it wasn't clean, that's why we keep our chin down, it must have gone through my jaw pushed my head aside and into my throat because I imagine if i'd have taken a clean right to the neck i'd have been choking so that's my conclusion. But it was a weird experience, 'cus I wasn't sure what happened, just that something was hurting and it wasn't a usual pain, then I realised it was my throat.
MikeBrew328 12-28-2008, 04:32 PM I've never been rocked before because I've never let anybody know I got "rocked" or bothered by the blow.....That's part of boxing
Hitman932 12-28-2008, 05:01 PM I've been rocked several times and it only bothers me if I am already tired out.
I have been hit with shots after 6-7 rounds of sparring that were nothing special that turned my legs to jello.
I have been hit twice as hard in the 1st round and walked through it.
ophqui 12-28-2008, 05:29 PM been off my feet once in a bout, wasnt particularly hurt just screwed up my footwork and got caught with a right hand straight down the middle. been buzzed a fair number of times, mostly sparring once in the ring, almost always straight rights as im a southpaw and that tends to be what i get hit with.

lmao yeah and what you said about hitting him with the punch thhat wobbled him and no one said anythign, thats what happened 2 me lol i hit him with a short hook that clocked him as he moved out, and just an annoyed silence from the guys on his state team

yeah i hear getting hit in the throat is a *****, never happened to me though , must be a hard shot to land

I was watching fight science, and they were talking about MMA fighters. They are like. They tuck their chin to protect their throat. I was like... thats not why you tuck your chin.

lol yeah
i was told we tuck our chins in because the point of your chin is very vulnerable, especially when it's raised or something like that
also leaves you less open to jaw shots too

There are several reasons why the Chin is tucked.
With shoulders f rward, it is hard to land a hook on a tucked chin. With a tucked chin it is easier to take punches without having your head snap back. With a tucked chin, you are less likely to get caught on the chin with a massive uppercut that spins your head around.
With your chin tucked, even if you get hit on the chin, there is less room for movement and your head will not get spun as much.
potatoes 12-29-2008, 02:14 AM Taking a heavy hit can result in any number of consequences. This is boxing and inevitably your are going to get hit no matter how much you try to avoid it. To minimize the damage you need to strengthen your neck muscles. A good boxing trainer will monitor your neck muscle training. A good trainer will also carp on at you about keeping your chin down. When your chin is down, it is much easier to absorb the force of the punch through the neck muscles.
The three rules of defense are chin down, guard up, move your head. If you observe these rules you won't take many heavy hits.
Equilibrium 12-29-2008, 02:24 AM I have never been hurt or rocked by a punch...yet. I am not saying this to brag because nobody is invincible, but i am a heavyweight and a sparred some very hard punchers and never had a problem.
I also got hit with a baseball bat right on the side of my skull and i wasnt dizzy, the pain was awful though. I also got a 40oz beer broke over my head, was fine too, but i remember stopping for a second and asking myself "Am i hurt" The answer was "No."
JayCoe 12-29-2008, 10:24 AM I was always taught that we keep our chin tucked in, in order to;
1) Protect the chin from clean shots.
2) Decreases how much your head is rattled when you receive a punch.
3) Protects your throat
4) When you have your guard up it helps reduce open facial target area.

They do that so they don't get choked out....
cosmichorn 01-01-2009, 07:57 PM in martial arts when i was 13 some guy who was probably about 5"10 and 15 (i was a skinny 5"6 then) caught me with a right hook which made made everything go black and a flash of white came, then everything fuzzed bu went back to normal (took about 2 seconds), and thats probably the hardest ive ever been hit really.
Talon 01-03-2009, 10:54 AM right uppercut by a big black guy.
it was like doing nitrous oxide. vision went white, ringing in my ears.. forgot i was even in the ring untill i woke up standing there. the guy was waiting for me to wake up lol
Superheavy 01-13-2009, 05:41 AM I've just started sparring in the last couple of months, just nice and easy. I'm a heavyweight - on sunday I was sparring a cruiser who clipped me with a hook bang on the nose - made my eyes water and I felt slighly disorientated for 5-10 seconds. Funny thing - in the fifth round I did the same to him with a light uppercut and he stopped the session!
A shot to the nose, even a fairly light shot, is always going to hurt and make your eyes water a bit, no? Any advice on how to protect the nose, besides generally maintaining a good defence?

thats it, head movement and tight guard
Marlin26 01-13-2009, 10:40 AM A couple months ago i was sparring my coach who is about 50 - 60 lbs heavyeir than me (im 5"8 139, he's like 6"1 190) anyway we got in real close and i landed some good shots and then suddenly BAM right hook, everything went black, i could feel my mouthguard leave my mouth and my legs went limp. Somehow i managed to catch myself before hitting the floor and brought my guard up and lasted through the round.
LetsgetSAVAGE 01-13-2009, 03:48 PM Well if your really a boxer, you know youv been rocked.
I was sparing a friend at the gym. He was a golden gloves contender and he is a fast little **** like 5'1 or 2 and like 112, Im 5'9 136 Im tall and lanky. so I was popin my jab and getting a little ****y. I threw it he slipped came under and hit me with an uppercut hook combo. When he hit me everything just stoped and got dark but then in 1-2 seconds I could see again. My head ****ed back from the uppercut then his hook connected with my jaw. I got all squinty and my legs felt weak, but I wasnt gonna go down. bottom line is I got ****ing rocked. but I guess it just makes you better
sorry for the disorderly paragraph. I forgot some parts of it
