do you care about the facility (Brand new, or rocky-esque hole in the wall gym?)

How many days of the week the gym is open? (Open in the mornings or afternoon?)

Who your instructor is (if he's a champ, Olympian etcetc)

Just curious

what kind of fighters they are pushing out, how long they've been around and the reputation.. , ive been to 3 gyms the nicest one in terms of equipment and everthing was the least legit.. it was one of those MMA/boxing gyms i had to get outta there

I was at a very reputable gym in Queens for a while now im back to my hometown and just got into this gym who took 3 guys to the olympics

Open at least six days. Trainer consistency. Structure to training sessions. Lots of partner work and sparring.

The trainer no 1. someone who is a proven, experienced trainer of champions.
2. quality sparring partners around your own weight, the better they are the more you will benefit.
the rest is not so important, but I like
a decent sized ring.
and somewhere to piss:peeright:

Trainer(s), Hours that its open, lots of variety of partners to work with, not full of *******s.

not full of *******s.
That's huge.

Of course the trainers and the sparring partners are the most important, but when there's no *******s in the gym it makes it a lot more fun. All the boxers at my gym are cool with each other. We train and spar hard, but we still joke around. Everyone is there to help each other improve, no dickheads going nuts trying to hurt people.

85% is the coach. if the coach is soft, the gym will be soft. you don't wanna practice for the hardest game with a soft coach. you are going to want a coach who pushes your limits the first day of conditioning, and every day after that. a coach who asks you to spar on day one.

10% is the competition to spar with at your weight at the gym

5% is the atmosphere/bags/whether or not it's ghetto

I love my gym because it's open 7 days a week. M-F it's open 6:30 AM till 9pm. Truly unheard of for a boxing gym, but it's awesome.

Trainer is big too. The trainer has to match your personality. I'm very dedicated, so I don't need someone to push me like some of y'all. I prefer a trainer that shows you the defensive moves before you spar and let's you ease into it. I've been to gyms where they will have you spar day 1. Sure, it works, but you turn a lot of people away.

And yes, all authentic boxing gyms MUST be in the ghetto!

I have not personally trained at the boxing gym that I plan to train at.... but this January I plan on going. With that said, I asked my friend about this boxing trainer..and he said he likes to showboat a lot and is ****y...not sure if that's a good thing...but hopefully the coach ain't soft.

My friend trains with an old-timer...70 year old+ ...and from what i've heard they're all friendly....not sure if I can same the same about the trainer taht i'll be training with (www.tonypep.com) but whats your take on this?

Would you rather train with some old-timer who teaches primarily for point fighting (Amateur) or train with a showboat hard-ass coach who pushes you to the limit ... while being a showboat..... do you guys got a problem with a coach who likes to be ****y?

I will report back my review of his gym ... luckily for me, they have a student plan so instead of paying $75 per month i'll be paying hopefully $50~$60

edit: I will be pissed if all the guys there are huge.... and no one is my weight/height... but I guess it's good practice

By the way this is the reply I got when I asked about their gym

I know sorry about the phone. The music is always blaring and the bell is going off every 3 mins so its hard for Tony to hear the phone sometimes.

There is no contract, $75 a month open 6 days a week: mon-fri 5-9, sat 1-5 pm. If you are a student, he has a student rate as well. you can drop by anytime during those hrs and check it out. Tony trains everyone and anyone who is interested in boxing. Both amateur and professional, or even if you just want to get in shape and do his classes they are available as well.

It's gotta be a good gym if the music is so loud and everyone is training their asses off that they can't even hear the phone ring (I called about 5 times lol) and judgin from this reply, im sure Tony works with everyone 1 on 1 during the Open Gym sessions....

my club (pcyc) is $5 a session lol (3 days a week)

oh and we also travel to other gyms for extra sparring and training usually once or twice a week which doesnt cost us, my coach just drives us

so i usually get 4-5 2-4 hour training sessions per week for $15 a week

not too bad

the coach at my gym lets most frequent users train for free, he just loves producing good boxers.
The gym is a shack really, very old school but has a great feeling to it. Bags are well worn, creaky flooring and walls but its ace.

I seemed to have recently gotten lucky. My new coach isn't ****y, at all. But he's sadistic, which is a good thing in my opinion.

The guy has a military background, not sure what his fight record was but I can tell he boxed, (Anyone who's boxed can tell another fighter when they see one) the guy is not ****y but pushes you HARD, to your limits...and if you quit on a drill, he just makes you look like a ***** by yelling stuff like "BOY IF YOU QUIT HERE, YOU GONNA QUIT IN A FIGHT!!!!" I had to quit during a punchout drill and during some abwork on my 2nd day back, I simply reached muscular/lung fatigue and couldn't handle it...He was like, PATRICK, WHATS YOUR PROBLEM? "...im tired coach..." ....."DEAL WITH IT!" he says...I like the guy, I found my new ****in' home.

They got some toughs in there, but none of em are in my weight class. I'm actually the best Heavyweight at that gym who currently trains there, although I know there are others in my state like Quantis Graves (Cut Off, La. - lost to Deontay Wilder in olympics) that would abso ****ing lutely annihilate me since I haven't trained in 2 years due to hand surgeries. He's not a big HW like me, but he's a short, compact, slick guy who knows how to fight.....Trust me, he's a good boxer.

We got a guy by the name of Tommy here, he is probably the best conditioned athlete in the boxing gym. The first day I went, I saw him spar about 6 different guys, 2 rounds a pop. The only punches he really took were soft jabs, and when he smelled blood or turned it on at the 30 second mark, this mother****er would TURN IT ON and drive home hard shots mixing them in really nice...Uppercuts when he would see the openings followed by hard short compact hooks with the opposite ****ed hand, then he'd back away and reset...My goal is to get in the same shape as this Tommy guy...He's a black dude, and looks younger than me (I'm 25 and weigh 265, 6'4") he's about 5'11" tall and weighs around 175. Bad mother****er.

Here's a video of my gym, posted by an amateur fighter out of baton rouge named Jason, (The asian dude in the video.) I have no idea what the black guy's name is, but I can tell you one thing, he can skip some ****ing rope. Jason is good with the bodywork here...He puts the Tszyu mix on this brutha but the brutha has superior timing, reflexes and speed. Great work by both guys, though.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/mW3cVJH7qK8&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/mW3cVJH7qK8&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Notice Jason is the only guy who threw a single body shot. The black guy's lead hand is way too low, imho. He should maintain a proper guard. Only a few gifted fighters on the planet, and/or super tall fighters with good hard jabs/triple jabs/double jabs should maintain a low lead hand like that......I gave it to the brutha, but good work by Jason....He's also in good shape...

edit- ps- see that big black 250lb bag in the background? that's a bad mother****er. You can lay into it as hard as you can punch and it won't hurt your wrist or fist, at all...it's not super soft either....Perfect bag for a hw.

When I was young there were lots of boxing clubs so you could pick and chose what you wanted. That was then, this is now. In today's world you have to take what is there because there ain't much available. Fortunately boxing is a sport in which expensive equipment isn't necessary. A good trainer can turn out some great prospects from a hole in the wall. Look at all the great boxers coming out of Mexico. You can't tell me they have the biggest and the best gyms in the world.

happy holidays everyone!

Since I'm just beginning to become an actual boxer, I'm just looking for the best trainer possible to get smart. I watch a lot of videos, but it's kind of pointless in the sense that it's similar to a five year old listen to adults speak, you just lose yourself in the conversation.

i love my gym even more so for the fact that i train at the same time as some of the pro's. it gives me an invaluable amount of experience and there's not as many people in the gym either so i don't have to wait on equipment to open up.

I joined my boxing gym because it was close to the university I study at. I attend class and then drive a couple minutes to the gym and work out. My gym has set hours, it's open like 2 hours a day, but that's good enough for me. I train 4 days a week at the gym and the days when the gym is closed I run and do calisthenics/core work at home or work out at the uni gym.

I like my gym because everyone there is really nice and easy going. The coaches are willing to work with anyone. They're not very strict, they let you decide how hard you want to work, but if you are just there to cause trouble or joke around they'll kick you out. The gym costs about $30 a month which I find pretty reasonable. There are some *******s there, but they're usually just ****y kids who don't last. They come sparingly or eventually quit after they get KTFO in the ring.

My one complaint is that there are too many young kids, like 13 and unders. They're so ****y and they don't work hard...I know I was like that when I was younger, but I wish there would be a separate time for the "older" guys to work out (I'm 20). There used to be two sessions, but they merged the sessions to save money. All the coaches are volunteers and the gym is partially state funded.
