View Full Version : Is Lyoto Machida a threat to the future of the UFC?
TRAVI$ 12-16-2008, 09:07 AM He has the most awkward fighting style, extremely boring to watch and has beaten Rich Franklin, BJ Penn, Tito Ortiz
If people training in Karate or whatever he does, see him as an example of how effective that style of fighting is, will it bring more elusive, get in - get out fighters to the UFC?
ABOSWORTH 12-16-2008, 10:42 AM I think most hardcore fans like him and appreciate his technical style. He reminds me of a slick boxer, like Hopkins or something. He can be boring but he rarely gets hit and wins his fights. It's hard to say if he is good or bad as far as getting asses in seats which might be part of the reason that he hasn't gotten a title shot yet. I really think he beats Griffen or almost anyone at LHW. I really like his style and I love the way he dismantled Tito. I know a lot of people thought that was a boring fight but I thought it was brilliant. He took away every edge that Tito had.
A lot of people who watch UFC just like to see KOs the same as many people like the brawling type boxers rather than the slick guys like Hopkins or Mayweather. It's the same story. You know if they stepped up the offense a bit that they would win in spectacular fashion. The advantage to that defensive style is winning the fights with the least amount of damage taken. Longevity.
Blair_Wells#32 12-16-2008, 02:36 PM im no fan, he's boring and fights not 2 lose much like tim slyvia or bisping....i read a interview that machida did comparing his style 2 BJJ in the early days pfft i was offended by that :lol1: at least when BJJ guys go 2 the ground they are looking for the finish.
if machida's style is the future of mma then i truly believe that will b the end of mma cause nobody's gonna buy into it.
YUHHHHHHH! 12-16-2008, 02:50 PM While I respect and admire Machida's style, I am almost positive that he will be beaten by intense and experienced stand up fighters, which are plentiful at 205. Thiago Silva, Wanderlei Silva, Quinton Jackson, Chuck Liddell, Anderson Silva(?) to name a few.
Not taking anything away from Tito Ortiz, Rich Franklin or BJ Penn, but they are not what I would call experienced stand up fighters.

I'm no fan but he's gonna roll through all of the guys you mentioned cuz of his slick style. He's smart tho, his body has way less miles then say a Wanderlei
Tata Moran 12-16-2008, 11:55 PM Hell NO! Machida aint seen nothing yet, he wont last 3 rounds with Rampage. His chin is unproven yet and he lacks power to KO fighters, just run around the entire fight counterstriking.
He's a very smart fighter though, very smart.

I don't believe we can know that yet, but I'm pretty confident in it. We haven't seen him with a dangerous, fast paced striker yet.
Blair_Wells#32 12-17-2008, 03:21 PM should b a great fight with Thiago im hoping Silva pushes the pace the whole fight and ko's machida or get the UD by chasing machida around with flurries.
Mozza 12-17-2008, 05:34 PM UFC probably already regret bringing him in but there will always be room for fighters like him so long as they do not dominate fight cards. The key is to striking a balance in the cards and the UFC has generally been excellent at this.
Breakbeat 12-17-2008, 06:10 PM He's not boring......his fighting style is just not your average MMA style.....he is more of a tactical fighter, when other fighters take him on they have to think about what they are doing otherwise he will pick them apart.
If you see the way he fights and really observe him he does not run away from people.....he just makes the other guy slow down and take less risks.
His lateral movement and footwork is second to none and charging in on him is not a good idea.
He is actually a breath of fresh air in the UFC!
People think his fight with Tito was boring? Did you miss him almost finishing Tito twice?
Lyoto's biggest challenge is Evans, due to his speed.
Mech. 12-17-2008, 11:29 PM I like him, I dont consider it boring. I wish he'd fight more if anything.
Blair_Wells#32 12-18-2008, 03:21 AM yes i consider his fight with tito boring, the best parts of that fight were when the ref fell over backwards an tito's triangle attempt.
:lol1: well those were my highlights of the fight.
