View Full Version : I'm going to buy a Dreamcast

It's been years since I sold my Dreamcast and the few games I had with it. But recently I've been dying to play through "Shenmue" again (one of my favorite games of all time), so I'm going to buy the console with the game for myself as a birthday present (December 19th).

Anyway, to anybody here who still owns or did own the Dreamcast, any game reccomendations? Pretty much all I played on it was Resident Evil, Shenmue, Crazy Taxi, and the Power Stone games.

Any cool mods out there for it?

P.S.- Why am I the only mother****er here who habitually buys retro games and consoles online and posts about it here?

You guys need to get your tongues out of Microsoft and Sony's respective asses.

This dude who owns a "mom and pop" type game store around the corner from me sells used N64 for 15 bucks a pop, I'm getting one of those too A.S.A.P. For "Ocarina of Time" and "Majora's Mask" mainly, but also some other fun platformers I enjoyed like Banjo Kazooie and Super Mario 64.

Can't beat a complete console for just $15.

I always supported Sony, but I briefly had a Dreamcast. Sonic Adventure was that FIRE. I never played typing of the dead, and I only played the Powerstone demo, it just had Falcon and GunrocK it was soooooo sick.

I never played Shenmue, any of them, did he ever get the dude who killed his dad?

"The only things I have in this world are my balls, and my word....and I don't break 'em for no one!"

Seriously though, Shenmue was a work of art. You either love it or hate it, I've found there is no middle ground with gamers and that series.

I fell in love with it instantly. I still remember paying $50 for that ***** and it was worth every penny to me.

Nope. Shenmue 2 is the last in the series and it's a cliffhanger ending, there was supposed to be a 3 but Sega lost a ****load of money on those 2 games. In total in cost them about $70 million just to make both titles, and each game only sold like a million units.

It pisses me off I'll never get my hands on that ponytailed prick Lan Di. I was all ready to **** him up too........

I still buy and play retro stuff. Car boot sales were a particular passion of mine for quite a while, and I last visited a retro gaming store on Tuesday. Sadly it's a shell of what it once was :(

I have a Dreamcast but don't play it. I still play N64 and Megadrive quite a bit though.

I think Street Fighter 3 is worth getting hold of, but you're unlikely to find it cheap.

Looking at the bookcase in my room, the games there are UK Saturn, Jap Saturn, US Saturn, MEGA CD, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, PSP, N64, PS3 and 360.

I like computer games.

I still haven't bit the hook for a 360 of PS3 yet. Resident Evil 5 has me sold though, I'm just waiting for it to come out before I break down and buy one. Still don't know which to get, I want a 360 for certain games, and the PS3 for others. The 360 is cheaper, that's always nice, but the damn things have horrid failure rates.

It sucks on an major level. As far as a "top 10" goes, the Shenmue series in on my list, probably even top 5. To never have it officially end really sucks ****, but it's only a game. At least I can buy the other 2 and enjoy them, but that's probably going to make me even more pissed. :lol1:

That sounds awesome man, I'd love to hear it. And I value your opinion a lot, you know this. I need someone to help me make a decision.

On a side note, I miss Sega Consoles. It's just not the same with them making games for the "big 3". They were so innovative. Hell, remember the Dreamcast "Visual Memory Unit"? A memory card that you can play games on!? Who other than Sega would've thought of that?

Or how about the Genesis hooking up to the Sega CD? And ontop of it you could also hook that up to the 32X? That made the most massive game console in the history of games but it was awesome as hell.

That's why I bought the Cube, for the RE series. I can have them all on one console now, well until 5 comes out.

That and the fact that I got "Twilight Princess" with it for $45 total. And that's probably the best Zelda game since "A Link to the Past" way back in the SNES days.

My take on the Cube is this : There's not many great games for it, infact most of the titles are garbage. But of the few great ones on it, all are must haves and warrant the purchase of the console.

Also need to pick up that "Metal Gear Solid" remake "The Twin Snakes". **** I just played through the PS1 version of it on Thanksgiving.

I also havent bitten the next gen thing neither. I'm to stuck on the past consoles. I want a ps3 for the same reason. Resident Evil 5, and cuz the Xbox dies after one day.

Dreamcast is ass, buy a sega cd and a copy of sewer sharks, and you're set.

Nah I had a dreamcast when it originally came out and rebought one like a couple years ago, I resold it though. Oddly enough I never played shenmue, I guess knowing its a cliffhanger I decided not to bother. I think one the best games for it was probably that sonic game, it was on another level.

You ever play Phantasy Star Online on it? I wanted to try it out but those ****ing broadband adapters are so ****ing expensive.

Whenever I want to play retro games I just download roms. I have a modded xbox I put emulators on, I played so many old arcade games on it with some MAME emulator.Fun times.

Good **** man. By your estimation what is the best "Final Fantasy" available for the PS2? I stopped playing them after 7 on the PS1. I still break out 2 and 3 on my SNES on occasion. Those and "Phantasy Star 4" on my Genesis.

Ever goto a gamestop to buy a PS2 game recently in the bargain bin and get looked at like an alien? :lol1:

I don't care, a good game is a good game, and PS2 has tons of them. And as long as I can get them for $3.99-$17.99 I'll keep on buying them.

The only other game I want on the PS3 is MGS4, but I still haven't adjusted to the fact that Snake is an old man this time out. The idea seems so foreign to me. Snake is the ultimate badass, he can't age!

On the MGS note, they better not ever try to make that into a movie or I'll firebomb the damn set. No actor out there could do as good a "Snake" as David Hayter does with the voice acting. And I can only imagine how much they'd take liberties with the script.

****ing Shia Labeaouf would be playing Snake, Owen Wilson would be Liquid Snake, and Reese Witherspoon would be Merryl. Complimented by Samuel L Jackson as Vulcan Raven, and Steve Carrell as Revolver Ocelot.

Shenmue 2 is the sequel, hence the name. It's a direct sequel too, picks up exactly when the first leaves off. If you're a fan of Hong Kong action flicks (bad english dubbing and all) you'll love the series.

I wish they would update that series, its just Rival Schools 1 on PS 1, a second one that was japan only for the PS 1 and then the 2nd one on dreamcast. Its a really quirky japanese capcom fighting game.

A great thing about dreamcast is that it needs no mod chip to run backups. Some of those games are impossible to find even if you wanted to.

What happened was my copy got a scratch on the topside of the disc, the label. And that rendered it unplayable. I spent months searching local gamestops and swap shops for it, with no result.

Now I can just buy a perfect copy on ebay for like 10 bucks or less.

I might get it again if I can. That game was better then Need For Speed to me.

Hell yeah it was. That was the little racing game that could. It had everything you want in a good racer. Up until I played it, it'd been years since I played a solid racing title.

The only other one I got into that much was Sega GT on the Xbox. Man I had a hell of a collection of cars in that game. Charger, Chevelle, Impreza, Lancer Evolution, the GT, I had about 40 different cars all maxed out.

Too bad Sega GT was competing against Gran Turismo.

Too bad Sega GT was competing against Gran Turismo.

Spot on. It got overlooked by, well, everybody. I got it at gamestop on a double game disc that also had "Jet Set Radio Future" on it for $2.99. Best $3 I ever spent, hands down.

Gran Turismo is too damn difficult for me, especially once you start progressing. Plus I hate racing games in which you're forced to have decals on your car. It's a cosmetic thing, and nothing major I know. But it annoys the **** out of me that my car has to have 15 stickers on it.

NFL and NBA 2k were two of my very favorite sports games ever created. I don't remember buying too many games for Dreamcast because it was undercut by PS2 and Sexbox so fast, but it was a solid system. Die Hard Arcade and Soul Calibur were awesome too.

I played SOA, and while it's a brilliant game it doesn't come close to FF7 or FF8.

FFV9 and 10 were disappointing. I didn't even bother to finish 10 despite getting close to the ending.

Tell me you played "Shenmue".......If not I'll stab your eyes out.

Shenmue was one of the best on DC. Shenmue II, slightly less so. I didn't like it as much because of the subtitles.

SoulCalibur is also a favorite, it rarely gets tiring in 2 player mode. For the record, NullDC emulator emulates SoulCalibur almost perfectly.

I got stuck (and bored) on Sonic Adventure 1. Never finished it. I did manage to finish Adventure 2 though.

Old-school 2D Sonic's are the best. They ****ed it up big time when it went 3D and started using stupid voice acting. It'd be cool if they made another 2D game, maybe use cell-shading. That'd look nice.

I have over 100 DC games. Great console!

I've had my Dreamcast for about 10 years and I'm still using it.

My favourites were:

Shenmue 2
Soul Calibur
Virtua Tennis 2
Phantasy Star Online
Record Of Lodoss War
Resident Evil Code Veronica
House Of The Dead 2
Crazy Taxi
Quake 3
Sega GT
UFC
Sega Smash Pack
Condfidential Mission

Right now as it's easy to play imports I'm playin Japanese shooters (Zero Gunner 2, Psyvariar 2 etc) and fighters (Last Blade 2) and Fire Pro Wrestling which is supposedly the best Wrestling series out there.
