View Full Version : Race as a factor.
Dr Cynical 09-24-2004, 06:25 AM Aside from boxing; what other sport is race such a big factor in?
What I mean by that is what other sport do you have people rooting for their race and causing riots when someone from their race doesn't win or is robbed and so on?
Dark Destroyer 09-24-2004, 06:32 AM Football or should i say Soccer to an American :)
Some countries get really nasty about that sport. Alot of people just turn up for the fights and bring race and countries into it, pretty sad really. Sport is meant to be entertaining and fun, those people who get racist and insultive only spoil things for the true fans.

I think it's half and half.
Half of the time bringing race into sports is a good thing.
People have more pride in their country, race, and fighters/players.
They also are more interested in the game/fight and show more passion towards it.
Then there's the riots and other negative things brought about by bringing race and country into it.

Yeah i agree people do have more pride in their countries BUT there will always be people who take things too far and start insulting people nastily. Been racist is not good for any sport and bringing race into it always causes racism. It shouldn't i know but it does and it's very sad indeed.

But there is a positive side to it as well.
For example, you're english (right?) and seeing Lennox Lewis be the champ and go out on top means alot more to you than any american because Lennox is from your country.
So you're more interested in Lennox and his fights and show more passion in those matches than others because you take pride in the fact that Lennox is from your country and doing well.

Actually not at all, yeah i support Lennox BUT that was because of his ability in the ring and not just because he was English or Jamiacan or Canadian  Obviously i want to see fighters from my country do well but i look at things on a boxing level and not a patriotic level. I am proud Lennox fought under the UK flag but thats not why i defend him, i defend any fighter who i think isn't getting the recognition he deserves.

But in some form nationality plays a role in who you favor or cheer for.
If two unknown guys fight and one is an american and one is english.
Who are you going to cheer for?

Yeah it does play a part slighty BUT if a English guy beat my favourite American guy i would be happy for the Englishman but i would be devastated to see my favourite fighter lose. Like i said i judge things more on a boxing level but i admit nationality plays a part but only a minor part for me.
.::|ULTIMATE|::. 09-24-2004, 07:15 AM I dont know if i'd go as far as race... but more like nationalistic and thats definitely Boxing and Soccer.
Winter 09-24-2004, 07:49 AM I will look at a boxer and I will either like them or not like them. When I like a boxer, the feeling just comes to me, it is natural. I cannot help the feeling.

Yeah i agree, the word race sounds so severe.
hi guys think theres a definte line between race and supporting your nation, for example did I love Nige benn cos he was a great warrior, yes, did I love him more cos he was English undoutedly, did I Like / dislike him cos he was a different colour to me.
Never entered my mind.
Similarly Ive always loved Bhop, not cos of his colour creed or nationality (tednds not to come into it unles sthey are british if Im honest).
I love him cos he is (was finally he is getting some kudos) an underated fighter, who has been anti establishement and refused to pander to the bull**** that orgs try and lay on him and a man of principle and he turned his life around.
Gotta admire a man like that. Barrerra is another one Ive always had a soft spot for so I dont think race / colour creed comes into it.
More where they come from might ie.e nation, though having said that I couldnt stand Naz. Not even the sight of him, shouted for barerra when they met lol!
theres always an exception!!!
I guess im a mixed up cookie. :D  :D

Yeah. Some of you Europeans get a little carried away at soccer matches.
SonnyG8R 09-26-2004, 01:14 PM How about the South Americans. Didn't some Brazillian fans murder a goalie because he missed a shot?
I hate Soccer. I think it is slow and boring as hell, and the fans are brainless hooligans.
As far as race goes, some races /nationalities do seem to be better in certain sports than others. I'm sure it is a combination of genetics and culture.

I heard it was a goalie from Iraq or Iran or something. He let up a GWG and they slayed him afterward.

Serves him right! I wish everytime the Mariner's bullpen blows a lead I could kill the closer. Jose Mesa, yo ass is mine!
