View Full Version : Your top 10 favourite albums (as of right now)
Bombardier 11-08-2004, 11:46 AM These lists change all the time as you discover new albums and get sick and tired of old ones, but right now what do you consider your top 10 favourtie albums all-time?
Here's my list. I omitted greatest hits records since that's sort of cheating, though I recommend those of The Jam, The Pogues, and The Stones (Hot Rocks Vol. 1):

3. Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
4. The Clash - The Clash

6. Public Enemy - It Take a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
7. Beastie Boys - Check Your Head
8. The Specials - The Specials
9. R.E.M. - Automatic for the People
10. Rolling Stones - England's Newest Hitmakers

those are good choices , but Paul's boutique ?
i have it , i m gonna listen to it again , but it s almost an experimental album , nowhere near "check your head" who is a masterpiece (so watcha want!)
jabsRstiff 11-08-2004, 11:58 AM "Paul's Boutique" is my favorite from the Beastie's...
'Lookin' Down The Barrell Of a Gun" is my favorite Beastie tune.

Paul's Boutique, IMO, is an absolute masterpiece of both sampling and pure hip-hop. The first five or six tracks are permanently catchy...I never get tired of hearing them, ever. And "Sounds of Science" might be my favourite Beastie song period.
I'll give you that Check Your Head is probably their most original, creative and carefully-crafted record. In terms of what I like to listen to, though, I'd probably grab Boutique ahead of it, just because it's more consistently listenable (some of the tracks on Check your Head I find a little iffy, though that's always what happens when bands try out so much new stuff).
ok guys , im gonna listen to it again tonight and give you a feedback.
maybe i had a pearl in the deeps of my discotek ...

LuKahnLi 11-08-2004, 01:25 PM Too many Albums I like. Hard to list them.
jabsRstiff 11-08-2004, 01:27 PM I just heard that U2 has recovered the music that they had lost prior to making their second album "October".
They lost everything....& practically winged the album in a very short time period.
It was a decent album, especially good in light of it's hasty arrangement.
But...someone unearthed the original material...
Incredible.
Bombardier 11-08-2004, 01:29 PM 6- Dropkick Murphys - The Gangs All Here
It's amazing that the Dropkicks still aren't more famous outside of Boston. I mean, they have lots of fans, but they're not mainstream-big. Yet in Boston they are H-U-G-E-Huge. They played in Fenway before the first game of the World Series, I believe (one of the games, anyway, or maybe more than one).

Really? Is it being sold? Have you listened to it?
BTW, could you see the Northern lights last night?
LuKahnLi 11-08-2004, 01:31 PM bomb
I wouldn't be so sure. Everybody in this area knows them. Dropkicks and Flogging Molly are both pretty big in Upstate NY.
jabsRstiff 11-08-2004, 01:32 PM I haven't heard what they plan on doing with it.
I'd love it if they'd record it....& bring their old producer, Steve Lillywhite, back in for the effort.
I did indeed see the Northern Lights !
Awesome.

Man, that makes me even more depressed about living in Ottawa than I was already. This place is like Hickstown City, Canada. People don't know a damn thing about anything...sigh...
LuKahnLi 11-08-2004, 01:34 PM Jabs
Really? That is odd that you were able to see them that far south. Have you before?
The only reason why I figured you may be able to was that they were directly overhead for me. Usually we need to look North to see them.

Canada has some good Irish Rock bands. The Glengarry Bhoys are pretty good. I saw Enter the Haggis at the Syracuse Irish fest. They were AWSOME.

The Mahones are decent, though I'm not sure if they're actually around much anymore (they had a LOT of problems for a while).
Haven't checked out Enter the Haggis, though I recognize the name (how could you not after seeing it once?).
We have some good music up here, for sure. In Ottawa the vast majority of people care more about their suurban mansions than anything that really matters, though.
LuKahnLi 11-08-2004, 01:42 PM The Mahones? What are they a Pogues cover band?
Pogue MaHone means "Kiss my Arse" in gaelic.
Bombardier 11-08-2004, 01:45 PM The Mahones? What are they a Pogues cover band?
Pogue MaHone means "Kiss my Arse" in gaelic.
No, in fact they kept insisting that they were more than just a clone of the Pogues (than change your name, genuises). They had some good songs, though, though a few too many in the "we're drunk and angry Irish dudes" vein. They didn't have the finesse that the Pogues did with that sort of thing.
LuKahnLi 11-08-2004, 01:47 PM Its hard to find people who listen to the Pogues. What is your favorite song?
Mine is a tie between A pair of Brown eyes and Sally Maclannan. Fairytale of New York and Sunny Side of the Street are close runners up.

I'm still a sucker for their incredible version of And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda. Man, that's song's amazing.
Man, hard to pick just one song. A Pair of Brown Eyes is great. I love the song they did with The Dubliners (Irish Rover...did they do any more?). I really need to get the studio albums. I've borrowed my friends' but all I own is the Greatest Hits.
Great band...

Boxerdog 11-08-2004, 08:59 PM I always like this topic. It's very dificult to narrow it down to ten and impossible to put them in order.

So without further doodoo:
Led Zep IV...............Led Zep
Astral Weeks.............Van Morrison
What's Goin' On .........Marvin Gaye
Pet Sounds...............Beach Boys
At Folsom Prison.........Johnny Cash (and it IS more Rockabilly than Country)
Axis: Bold As Love.......Jimi Hendrix
Electric Ladyland........Jimi Hendrix
Revolver.................
Rubber Soul..............
Sgt. Pepper..............Beatles
SonnyG8R 11-08-2004, 09:01 PM There is no way I could limit it to 10 albums so I'm going to start naming some of my favorite albums and see where it goes.

neils7147933 11-08-2004, 09:55 PM yeah, give me a call -
No, actually when I first signed up for an email account, Excite gave me a suggestion for email address that was my name plus two numbers. When I went to sign up for an account through a different company, that address was taken, so it annexed my zip code to those numbers.
Since then, I've used the same User ID on Imdb.com and basically every other site I sign up on.

nohero 11-08-2004, 10:25 PM Unbelievable... I come here to talk about boxing and run into posts about my other passions, music and movies. It's tough for me to think up a list but it goes something like this:
1- Offspring - Smash (highest selling indi album of all-time)
2- Bryan Adams - Reckless
3- Bryan Adams - Waking up the Neighbors
4- Metallica - Black Album (self-titled)
5- Guns & Roses - Use Your Illusion I & II (I count them as 1)
6- Soul Asylum - Grave Dancer's Union
7- Bad Religion - All Ages
8- Blink 182 - Dude Ranch
9- Sublime - Sublime
10- Boston - Boston
Dr.Depravity 11-08-2004, 10:27 PM Bad Religion's a great band. Those guys and Social Distortion are great to listen to while getting drunk at a party.
nohero 11-08-2004, 10:49 PM I don't know if anyone ever noticed but 1991 was the year of music... not everyone would agree but several huge bands had their biggest albums in 1991.
Metallica - Black Album
Guns & Roses - Use Your Illusion I & II
U2 - Achtung Baby
Pearl Jam - Ten
Bryan Adams - Waking Up The Neighbors
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magic
Prince - Diamonds And Pearls
Nirvana - Nevermind
REM - Out Of Time
Van Halen - For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge
Michael Jackson - Dangerous
The list goes on to include albums by Tom Petty, Temple of the Dog, Tom Cochrane (Life is a Highway), Ozzy Osbourne... and one-hit wonders Spin Doctors and Mr Big.
Was a HUGE year for music... the last push from the 80's.
nohero 11-08-2004, 10:53 PM Bad Religion's a great band. Those guys and Social Distortion are great to listen to while getting drunk at a party.
Bad Religion is the ultimate "grow on you" band... if you like punk at all, even just a little bit... force yourself to listen to them for awhile and you'll not regret it. If you get to see them live, Greg Graffin is like a king on stage... he has a very powerful presence and is a brilliant man. No Control and The Grey Race are 2 other albums you should hear aside from All Ages.
As for Social Distortion, they sing possibly my favorite punk song outside of the Offspring and that's Don't Drag Me Down.

Seriously though, from oldies like Runaround Sue by Dion to gangsta rap like Paparazzi by Xzibit... from classic instrumentals like Por Una Cabeza by Carlos Gardel to modern punk like Walk the Walk by Face to Face.
If I had to choose a genre in particular I would say either 80's hair metal (Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Warrant, etc...) or modern punk or power-pop as some people call it (Offspring, Bad Religion, Millencolin, etc...)

I'm a fan of just anything that gets me into the right groove, emotion.
But I love listening to 70's pop/rock. From Led Zepp to ABBA. ;)

boxing fan 12-24-2004, 08:01 PM I don't listen to whole albums not that much because I usually just listen to single songs when I'm at the skating rink at an all-night skate but some times I get some CDs and I hope I get some for Christmas!
