In grappling tournaments many give points for passing the guard and there are no points for holding the guard.
I think this is stupidity.
What do you all think?

I think the rules are good. The goal is to advance not hold. I wanna see the top guy passing and the bottome guy going for sweeps and subs.

the tournament I was in gave the guy points for getting out of my guard, but he did not advance
I hate that because I constantly open and close my guard

If they didnt pass that was wrong. A pass is when they get to side control and hold it for a few seconds.

At the gracie tournament in Calia few month ago they wher giving points for holding in the guard (which I think is stupid an ddefeats the purpose of offence).

chris it dies sound you did get shfted or perhaps you did not know that it might have been part of the rules for that particular tournament.

2 points would be sufficient if a guy succesfully passes the guard

I guess that it means you ahve to be able to make them tap. It should be a main goal anyway.

getting points for holding guard is retarded. Just pull guard and don't open it.

Whats the point rewarded that?
