Dana was saying he believes MMA has the potential to become the biggest sport on the planet and that the UFC will become the bigger than the NFL.

I PARTIALLY agree with him. I think the UFC can completely take over the world. Let's put it in perspective. MMA can become the one sport that could be huge i nevery country on the planet because people understand the competition of fighting and will love the complexity of Mixed Martial Arts.

The NFL came to the UK and nobody gave a ****. The UFC comes along and it really starts to gain interest...

However, I think the best way this would happen is if the UFC never had to face any mainstream competition. If the UFC became a sanctioned NFL-like league that remains elite to all other promotions I think this could definitely happen.

America wants its sports to be bigger, better than everything
That's why they never accepted "Soccer" and stick to NFL, NBA and Baseball etc
UFC will be big worldwide for some time, but then become another strictly American sport IMO.

The advantage is every country has martial arts gyms. The human race are interested in fighting and are fascinated by it. Nothing will ever change that.

That's why the UFC can broaden it's appeal worldwide.

Also the potential of the sport itself with regards to the quality and skills that fighters possess has not even come close to what it can and probably will be.

I believe that in 5 to 10 years from now you are gonna see guys who are absolutely sick! I mean if you look at the sport now, the majority of guys started out doing one martial art before learning other ones. 5 to 10 years from now you are gonna have guys that have been learning everything from the start instead of focusing on one thing then learning something else, those are the guys who are gonna be the ones to watch. IMO MMA hasn't even begun to scratch the surface of what it could become.

Couple that with the fact that it trancends all language barriers where most sports don't, you defo have the potential for a worldwide phenomenon.

well I can't speak for everyone in the US, but I don't find soccer to be particularly exciting to watch .. that might factor into it's lack of popularity in the states.

so why is a sport like Boxing, which I'd consider to be exciting kept for the majority on premium networks and PPV's.

I think part of that reason is how boxing is marketed

take the 3rd season of the Contender for example which obviously edited the fights to show as much action as possible (which every season has been doing, but anyway). take the David Banks vs Max Smith fight .. which by the end of it had Smith's face noticeably beat up

yet when you view the full 5 round fight .. the crowd can be heard booing at times.

it's this radical contradiction (can't find better word sorry)

that I feel really gives people the wrong impression about Boxing, the sports this ultra slug fest combative high light reel

when that's not the case all the time.

Boxing's problems nearly all stem from promoters and their need to protect boxers in order to make as much money. Plus adding even more weight classes, and having 4 different world titles going around doesn't help either. I mean in some cases you have 4 different guys in a weight division claiming to be the world champion at that weight, and more often than not they never fight each other. It confuse casual fans so much that they prolly get turned off by it and can't be bothered watching it.

It won't get bigger than team sports in terms of merchandise, global appeal, etc.

Soccer is a lot bigger in the states than most people here will recognize.
Here it is better known as a female sport since there are little to no American style football leagues for females to join.
It's also big for small children whos parents are afraid of the danger involved in American football.
Also a vast amount of Mexican Americans still enjoy the sport.

To answer the main question.....HELL NO!

Football will always roll everything else in America.

And Baseball, too. Even though I have no reason why? **** is boring.

(Real) Football will always be the most popular sport in the world, it's a cheap sport to learn and play, the concept of it isn't hard either so it really suits pretty much every country, especially those with a poor economy. It's easily the best sport imo, it's fast, fluid and doesn't have stopping and starting all the time like Rugby or NFL etc. But as I said, the reason football is the biggest sport in the world is because is economic and the concept is easy to learn. Nothing tops football.

Yep

it's pretty amazing to see how many Brazilian stars grew up in poverty and are now multi-millionaire superstars...

I don't think it will ever be bigger than soccer. Look at Brazil. They are one of the top three countries when it comes to producing top MMA fighters (USA and Japan being the other two) and MMA/Vale Tudo has been around in Brazil for decades. But MMA is absolutely nothing in Brazil compared to soccer.

Another thing is alot of people just don't want to watch people punch and kick each other. Generations of families can all gather around and watch a soccer game, but people don't want Grandma and the kids to see guys get beaten into a bloody mess.
