There are bad fighters. There are good fighters. There are great fighters. But then there are the fighters that are godlike. They are not only great fighters but seperate themselves from the others by being sources of inspiration. They are our heros. They are why we watch and love this sport. They are different for everyone depending on what you see in them and in their fights. This is my list of the Gods of MMA. My list of heros. The list pf people that I will tell my grandchildren about and how they inspired a generation.

Randy Couture: Quite possibly the greatest fighter of all time. Humble, respectful, knowledgeable. He is the opitimy of what MMA is all about. Doesn't have the greatest record but so what. He is the man.

Antonio Nogueira: What a rise to fame in the past 2 years. What can you say about the man. His heart is only matched by his iron chin. He defeated the monster Sapp. He took so much punishment in his fight with Fedor that it would have killed a mortal man. He absorbed all Mirko had and tapped him out too. He trains his ass off and doesn't talk ****. He loves the sport andis often emotional. He is a god.

Murilo Bustamante: Considered one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world. Nothing can ever be taken away from him. Even after 2 staight loses no one, NO ONE, doubts him. He is amazing. Great ground skill and knockout power. I was so hoping his fight with Henderson would be one for the ages. Busta is 37 will retire sooner rather than later. I wish my kids would be able to see him fight. He provides endless sources of inspiration and courage. I wish I was half of what Busta is.

Wanderlei Silva: He's a bit different from the others on this list. He is a killer. An animal. People doubted what he was made of. They doubted his greatness. He proved them all wrong. He faced the best and came out on top. He is also very respectful to his opponents for the most part. He is a true champion and he showed us why this weekend.

Kazushi Sakuraba: I like to view Sak from his ealier fights. The sport has evolved too far for him to be fighting outside of his division. Always funny and kind hearted, Sak displays many great qualities combined with tremendous talent. Always putting the fans first, apologizing for bad preformances and boring fights. Alot of people hate him because he has beaten their favorite fighters. Well he beat mine at Pride 5 and you don't see me hating. As Cesaro would say "Sak is a gangsta". Fifty years from now people will remember him. He is a legend. He is a God.

*Notice how Vitor does not make this list despite being my favorite fighter. Maybe if he beats Randy or puts up a valient fight but right now he is only a great fighter, not a god.

I've been thinking about this some more and I need to add someone to this list. Ken Shamrock. He's not the greatest fighter. Maybe not ever a great fighter but he is a warrior. I remember watching him when I was about 13 years old. He was the greatest to me. I thought he was unbeatable. Now I didn't have a very good understanding about MMA when I was that young but that doesn't matter. Ken Shamrock's legend lived within me. I told people about this UFC fighter that no one could beat. He would fight for 20 minutes and beat his opponent into submission or tap them out. Isn't that worth something? Sure I was exaggerating back then but I didn't know any better. Exaggeration is how legends are born, it's how they live on. It's part of being a God of MMA.

They're men, just like you, me and everybody else. Not Gods, but they do have focus, discipline and determination that 99.9% of us will never be able to match. I for one, am extremely jealous of their abilities and drive to be the best at their profession.
