View Full Version : Chris Leben Tests Positive For Steroids
jakkups 11-03-2008, 06:49 PM CHRIS LEBEN TESTS POSITIVE FOR STEROIDS (http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/templates/dailynews.asp?articleid=7489&zoneid=2)
The Ultimate Fighting Championship has suspended fighter Chris Leben for nine months and fined him one-third of his fight purse following a positive drug test for the steroid Stanazolol after his loss to Michael Bisping at UFC 89 in England in October. The news was reported by Dave Meltzer of Yahoo! Sports.
The UFC has long stood by drug testing of the athletes competing for the promotion, even overseas in England where they have no formal athletic commission to handle the process.
At these events, the UFC leans on former head of the Nevada State Athletic Commission and now UFC vice president, Marc Ratner, to handle the duties normally handled by an overseeing committee like the athletic commissions in the United States.
Leben has never tested positive before, but this is still a major setback in his career.
“I am obviously disappointed with Chris, who has made great strides getting his life back on track,” UFC president Dana White told Meltzer. “To his credit, he has taken responsibility for his actions and is accepting the punishment that has been handed down. But as always, the UFC puts the safety of its athletes first and foremost, and we won’t tolerate anyone using performance enhancing drugs in our organization.”
According to the report, the UFC tested all 22 athletes on the card before and after the fights, and Leben to date is the only fighter who has tested positive for illegal substances.

MJ406 11-03-2008, 07:55 PM is anyone suprised by this
well Leben doesn't have a history of roids
read the rest of the article on s-dog.
and talk about adding insult to injury (or so the expression goes)
not only did Chris get completely schooled in there fight (i thought he easily lost all 3 rounds)
but a 9 month ban for the positive test on top of it?
ouch.
youngswish23 11-03-2008, 07:57 PM im not suprised!
th4l3pr3ch4un 11-03-2008, 08:24 PM son of a *****... all the fighters i love to watch always do stupid **** like this...
i got to admit though, he did looking like a ****ing beast walking into the cage, his chest was gigantic.
YUHHHHHHH! 11-03-2008, 09:27 PM I think Leben's chest was huge because of that bodybuilder that he's been working with.
Steroids couldn't have hurt either. Disappointing.
ScottDBA 11-03-2008, 10:04 PM It was funny becuase on a mma forum I post on, there was a big thread with some pictures of him before the fight and everyone was talking about he looked to be in incredible shape, was obviously training harder than ever before and Bisping was dead.
Turns out he cheated and still lost. Owned.
Damn Leben that sucks, why risk it in a company like UFC
American_Ninja 11-04-2008, 12:58 AM Idiot, what good did it do him? Still got his ass kicked.

Yarmez 11-04-2008, 06:48 AM Leben Is A Tool He was gonna get hacked worse than he did against Silva, **** at least Cote Put up a better fight than Leben Did Against Spider.
I wonder if after the Bisping fight he cried like he did on TUF season 1, Punk *****
No suprises here. I like Leben but he's a ****ing loose cannon.
I said this a while back here and someone argued how much he had changed spiritually since his Hawaii switch. Seems I was right...
ABOSWORTH 11-04-2008, 11:50 AM I read about this yesterday. Very disappointing. :nonono:
Napalm Death 11-04-2008, 12:09 PM this makes bispings win even more impressive. he didnt just beat the junkie, he nailed him over 3 rounds.

Yeah, Bisbing is a damn good fighter and the steroids didn't matter, he beat him soundly anyhow. Bisbing had some moments at the end of the fight but I would say Bisbing won all 3.
Why do these ****ing guys take steroids when they know how strict they are about them? He must have known that he would get caught, they piss test after every fight.. It's just stupid...:killyou:

well a comment I read on sh-dog said something along the lines of Leben having done the roids 7 months back I believe
and the fact that they apparently didn't clear his system (thus the obvious positive test)
so I don't think Leben planned on getting caught as the first part of my response suggests that Leben was cycling the roids out of his system rather then actively using (again dunno how much truth there is to what I read)
but weather he was cycling them out of his system or actively using roids the facts remain. Leben got caught and steroids/performance enhancers are illegal under the rule book.
the UFC tests for illegal substances and Leben failed. like you said, very dumb on his part.

Thanks for the additional info. But you are right, the fact remains that he took the roids which is unacceptable in combat sports, as it damn well should be.
I know this is somewhat hypocritical but when a fighter takes them to recover from an injury it doesn't seem as bad to me. Like Hermes Franca for instants. He got injured and was in a financial pinch so he decided that rather than cancel the fight, he would take the steroid to help him recover faster, knowing that he would be penalized and fined. The guy needed the money and he did what he had to do to put food on the table, so to speak. I can understand that. That may have been the case with Leban 7 months back but he said nothing of that.

yeah I actually see where your coming from as injured and going into a fight Hermes back is against the wall ... he can either pull out and recover/miss the payday completely ... or use roids to recover from injury .. be able to fight and risk getting caught post fight drug test results.
but on top of all that (it's mostly bolded) here's something else that wasn't brought up.
this was a title shot. understanding or not, can you imagine how much worse it would have been had Franca beaten Sherk for the title.
You don't seriously think the UFC would have kept Franca as it's champion, right?
Don't get me wrong, I can see the "he used roids to get healthy and be able to fight" side of it as it's the UFC, pay isn't great compared to boxing and this is a title shot, those don't come around all too often, especially to Franca.
but at the same time how do you think a positive drug test is gonna look in your big title fight opportunity?
im just saying ... Diaz over Gomi and of course James Toney vs John Ruiz in boxing were both wins for the 1st mentioned fighter .. yet the outcomes changed because of failed drug tests.
granted the situations were different.
but again sure Franca can use the roids to heal himself .. but in the long run is it really worth it? and the same goes for Leben.
th4l3pr3ch4un 11-04-2008, 10:10 PM steroids are deffinantly wrong in the sport...
but lets be honest...
alot of these guys are trying to get an edge you might say...
Leben just got caught for it... it sucks but hopefully it prevents other fighters from making the same mistake

right, but I have to ask .. how many fighters are out there that are clean?
as im sure there are various detox drugs fighters can take to get the roids completely out of the system.
punchDrUnK MONK 11-04-2008, 10:56 PM wut a moron, his iron chin rep is officially dunski

Good post:fing02: I completely agree. It would have been worse if Franca had won. I'm sure they would have stripped him of his title and it was still wrong of him to do it. James Toney really ****ed himself and his legacy by doing that.:nonono: He should have that win but he took roids and ****ed himself over.
MJ406 11-06-2008, 01:04 PM well yeah I believe at the professional level, especially when considering title shots Fighters really have to think intelligently in how they go about there decisions regarding to use/not use performance enhancing drugs
and on a slight tangent it's why I find the Nick Diaz situation mildly humorous
as not only does the fighter admit to openly smoking marijuana
but he complains about it (fact that it's not legal)
granted marijuana isn't a performance enhancing drug (doesn't increase red blood cells, muscle mass or help with faster recovery for example)
But IMO it's still effort wasted to complain about using an illegal substance (at least in the States) regardless if it enhances performance or not
simply because it's 1. Illegal and 2. banned under the NSAC
