A span of more than 2 ½ years had passed since the St.
Louis area received its regular helping of MMA, which
was known as Reality Submission Fighting. One of the
truly up-and-coming promotions of the time, this
smaller promotion "that could" was making waves,
featuring stellar line-ups with the likes of, Chris
Lytle v. Dave Strasser, Sean Sherk v. Gokor student
Manvel Gamburyan, the yet undiscovered Karo Parisyan
also v. Sherk, and Steve Berger v. Shonie Carter
(ending with a tap out by Carter), just to name a few.
However, legal troubles in the Illinois (RSF operated
in Bellville, IL just across the border from St.
Louis) derailed the promotions progress, leaving a
gaping void in the Midwest MMA scene.
However, in 2003 a break through in the Land of
Lincoln occurred that opened the door for the RSF's
triumphant return. The International Shooto
Commission received approval from the Illinois
Department of Professional Regulation to hold
professional Shooto events, under the exemption in the
IL statutes that says Martial Arts events are not
under the states regulatory jurisdiction. From there,
it was just a matter of time until Illinois' most
successful down-state promoter hooked up with the most
prestigious MMA sanctioning body in the world to once
again shake up the MMA scene in the Midwest.
On October 3, 2003 RSF emerged from exile with a
blockbuster card, in the Fischer Ballroom, that has
set the stage for what's to come. Chris Lytle made
his SHOOTO debut by choking out the rising Midwest
star Derek Noble. Stoic MMA vets The Ironman Travis
Fulton and Phil Johns also logged victories by besting
the very seasoned Brian Dunn, and the wily Tom Kirk
respectively. Also on the card were a host of less
known but highly skilled competitors that combined for
7 KO and Submission victories out of 8 total fights.
The momentum will continue to build for the RSF and
for SHOOTO's place in the American MMA culture, when
the two organizations unite again on January 3rd, in
the Bell Clair Fairgrounds and Expo Center at 200
Southbelt East in Bellville, IL - (618)235-0666.
