Patrick Cote knee surgery to result in lengthy recovery

Chris Insinna

Patrick Cote tore the meniscus in his right knee during the third round of his main event fight against middleweight champion Anderson Silva at UFC 90: “Silva vs. Cote” at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., this past weekend.

“The Predator” will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery to repair the damage next week and possibly be out of action for up to eight months.

The report indicates that the Canadian actually suffered the injury just four weeks out from the fight and decided to push through it and challenge “The Spider” rather than withdraw from the card, which had already been ravaged by injuries.

He took a cortisone shot to dull any discomfort prior to the showdown and all seemed to be good until Cote tweaked the knee in the second round. Cote then came out for the third round and lasted just 39 seconds — he collapsed in a heap when the meniscus finally gave way.

Referee Herb Dean waived off the action, ending perhaps one of the most bizarre title fights in recent memory. In fact, the antics of Silva before the stoppage combined with the freak injury has numerous critics nationwide lambasting the pay-per-view (PPV) event despite solid action on the main card.

damn torn MCL he should be out a while ... my guess 6-8 months. knee injuries like that are pretty serious from what I've read about them

i dunno im mixed about the main card ... the main event was very dull, because of the antics by Silva and just when it looked to be picking up in the 3rd round .. fight over cuz of blown knee

Griffin/Sherk and Alves/Koscheck .. not to mention the Werdum fight were all reasonably entertaining ... although the Meynard fight was horribly boring

yeah 6-8 months out of action, that sucks by the time he gets back Silva will b Retired.
he took Silva's best shots an kept moving that had 2 play with Silva's head a little bit, he probably would have had 2 take Cote down an Sub him if the fight kept goin, well that is if Cote didn't catch him first.
kinda tough 2 figure out who Cote will fight when he gets back, if he does get a title shot on his fight back, Henderson should b in the run for the title after he finishes with Bisping and Franklin, Yushin Okami will b in the running as well, Demian Maia i don't really see anyone beating for awhile so by summer next year he could b in the running for the title.
i would like 2 see Cote get a warm up fight first b4 a immediate shot at the title just 2 get rid of some of the rust maybe Bisping or Leben.

oh god Cote-Bisping would be the same thing as Bisping-Leben IMO

lots of movement by Bisping and counter punching/knee's to a unanamous decision.

especially coming back from knee surgery don't expect Cote's mobility to be at it's best

so I'd expect Bisping to pick him apart and keep the distance enough for 15 min to win the fight.
