Curly Howard 11-04-2003, 01:01 AM I d/l black ice defender. It closed the ports noton left open. I d/l mcafee's 7.0 I also d/l anti trojan 5,5 and it found a trojan on here that norton said was A-Okay. Plus everything seems to be running faster. Moral of the story Norton sucks Magic Man 11-04-2003, 01:05 AM Norton Adult Video...oh sweet mercy. GeNeRaL 11-04-2003, 01:36 AM Norton is actually the best there is. Configure it properly and it works great. You need to set your heuristics to the maximum levels in real time protection and scanning. McAfee was once decent, until you look at their definitions. They, to this day, do not protect against a number of viruses that norton does. A family member of mine got a virus and was using McAfee, updated one day previous. The virus they got was not protected by mcafee and caused major file damge to some important files. Mcafee was contacted and replied "we dont cover against that virus, it's just not a big enough problem to worry about." Interesting enough... Norton covers that virus, and had for over a year prior. Symantec has the best antivirus teams out there researching, and the #1 place that virus' are reported to is Symantec and their SARC research center. If you have questions or need a hand with any of the configuration, Curly, Shoot mea pm and i'll be glad to help you out. Im a Network Administrator (computer geek) by profession. :) GeNeRaL 11-04-2003, 01:38 AM black ice defender is not an antivirus really, but more of a software firewall that is a hackers dream with minimal protection. Norton Antivirus doesnt typically control ports like a firewall, that would be something called Norton Personal Firewall. :) Curly Howard 11-04-2003, 02:09 AM I had Norton's personal firewall and antivirus and running 24/7. I closed down everything and noticed a ton of traffic through my internet connection. I figured it was just a program auto updating but just for fun I went here http://scan.sygate.com/trojanscan.html and had a couple of ports open. I did a virus scan like I do once a week and nothing was found. I had it set for max heuristics scanning and protection. I went through Norton's firewall and made sure I had it set up to "paranoid" mode, checked to make sure no one had accidentally gave a program internet access that shouldn't have it. Everything checked out ok. So I downloaded anti trojan 5.5 and ran it with Norton's activated. It found ports opened and connected with other machines. They couldn't get access to anything but they we're there. I did a trace and one was from Canada and the other Germany. I didn't have any file sharing or other programs running. It also found a trojan installed on here. I left it on and scanned it with Norton's and it said the file was ok. I then uninstalled Norton's and loaded Mcafee's and scanned the same file. It said it was a trojan, some type of key logger. I found the file that it had been logging everything I typed in outlook. I then installed Black ice firewall and did the port scan. It had blocked everything. DragonZero 11-04-2003, 06:16 AM well i have both lets see how it works GeNeRaL 11-04-2003, 08:04 AM Curly: were your windows updates all done and were you patched against the trojans that are recent within the last couple of months? There are trojans out there that exploit windows security problems and enter your pc via internet explorer and javascripting from websites. You have to update windows regularly to stop this, as norton will only protect what it can. Unfortunately, Microsoft is full of security issues and people love to exploit this. check your windows update at LEAST weekly. You can also se it to download security updates automatically and notify you that they are ready to install. Windows Security page (http://www.microsoft.com/security/) :) Curly Howard 11-04-2003, 08:18 AM yeah I go there about once a week. I'm kinda paranoid about that type of stuff and keep up on it. That's why this kind of shocked me when I found out. It's fixed now. I checked my port activity (netstat -a) and they're all local. I checked it before with nortons and had a couple that were connected with no programs running. THanks for the help :) The Jake 11-04-2003, 12:21 PM I deal in Network Abuse and 90% of what I do is dealing with virus infected customers. About 90% use Norton, of which, lately has not been too effective by all reports. It could be that these jackasses aren't updating but still, it's rather alarming the number of customers who insist they're doing weekly updates and O/S updates and still getting owned. Like Kaps said, try AVG at http://www.grisoft.com This is the one I recommend and it's also one my dad refers his customers too as well (he is a consultant). Check out AVG 6.0. It's free. - J. momita 11-04-2003, 01:26 PM I go here once a week, I have Norton but just to double check.... Housecall (http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp) |
