View Full Version : Heavyweight Champs Through The Ropes
No-Mas 11-06-2004, 11:49 AM Not a trivia question, but just curious. Can you give instances of the Heavyweight Champion of the World getting knocked through the ropes.
I come up with just two and a half:
Dempsey / Firpo
Louis / Baer I
Rahman / Maskaev
I know Rahman wasn't champ when he went through the ropes against Maskaev, but I'l count him anyway.
Any other champ suffer that indignity of getting blasted out of the ring?

Buddy Bear?
Jack Johnson-James J. Jeffries
Rocky Marciano-Roland LaStarza (1953)
Lennox Lewis-Francois Botha
Great 11-06-2004, 12:12 PM Roland LaStarza at all was not the champion, but the moment was very entertainment, and was that in title fight.
joe louis got knocked through the ropes by rocky marciano but he wasn't champion at the time.
No-Mas 11-06-2004, 12:23 PM I have the LaStarza / Marciano fight. I don't remember Marciano going through the ropes. I'll watch it again tonight before the Tszyu fight (now there's a great night of boxing - Marciano followed by Tszyu).
Yeah Buddy Baer sent Louis through the ropes in their first fight. Pretty positive it was round one.
Great 11-06-2004, 12:40 PM LaStarza going through the ropes (not Marciano) after right uppercut. Second fight.

Dempsey 1919 11-01-2005, 05:07 PM what about the manassah mauler jack dempsey knocking champion gene tunney through the ropes in 1927?
Skydog 11-01-2005, 09:32 PM I don't really remember, but did Dempsey knock Willard out of the ropes at all? I know Willard's head went through on one of the knockdowns, but did his whole body?
Dempsey 1919 11-02-2005, 01:49 AM no. willard stayed in the ring the whole time.
velvet fog 11-02-2005, 01:59 AM Golota was never champ, but Brewster knocked his ass through the ropes. As for non heavyweights, didnt McClellan put Benn through the ropes?

As a matter of fact, yes he did. It should have been ruled a knockout, but the referee gave Benn extra time. That had to be one of the most crooked referees I have ever seen.
Louis was knocked through the ropes by Buddy Baer, but Baer used his knee to force Louis out of the ring once Louis was backed against the ropes by a punch. Not legit once you see it.
Skydog 11-02-2005, 07:43 PM no. willard stayed in the ring the whole time.
No, Willard was sticking his head and some of his upper body through the ropes, almost as if trying to escape. ****, I don't blame him.
Dempsey 1919 11-09-2005, 02:25 PM No, Willard was sticking his head and some of his upper body through the ropes, almost as if trying to escape. ****, I don't blame him.
yeah, willard is a punk, and should not have gotten the title in the first place. he is one of the worst hw champs of all times.
jabsRstiff 11-09-2005, 03:17 PM Dempsey knocked Tunney down along the ropes....not through them.
