Former boxing champ sentenced for fourth DWI

READINGTON, N.J. (AP) - Former boxing champion Bobby Czyz Jr. had his driver's license suspended for 10 years following his fourth drunken driving offense in six years.

Czyz, 41, was arrested Feb. 2 after police said he was driving more than 30 mph over the speed limit. A subsequent breath test showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.14, which exceeds New Jersey's legal limit of 0.10.

Czyz received a 10-year license suspension when he was re-sentenced in March for two previous DWI convictions. That, combined with Thursday's sentence, means Czyz will be barred from driving for 20 years.

He also served 10 days in jail and completed an inpatient alcohol abuse program following March's re-sentencing. Czyz also was charged with drunken driving after a minor accident in Old Bridge in 1997.

Czyz held International Boxing Federation light heavyweight and World Boxing Association cruiserweight titles during an 18-year career and was inducted into the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame in 1997. He has since worked as a boxing commentator for the Showtime cable network.
