View Full Version : Why I think Matt Hughes is the best pound for pound in the world

Matt Hughes in my eyes is the perfect MMA fighter. He has good to world class skills in all areas of the fight game. Lets start

His stand-up: Probably the weakest area of his game. However, the fact that it doesn't stand out as a weakness says something. No one really questions his chin as his only knockout loss is from a knee by Pele that would of knocked out a truck.

Wrestling: There are two types of wrestlers in MMA. Ones that are ground and pound types. Tito Ortiz, Mark Coleman, Fedor....guys of that nature. Then there are position wrestlers. The guys at Team Quest are a perfect example of that. Randy Couture, Dan Henderson, Matt Lindland. Matt Hughes is both. Matt can pound away in the guard AND use is wrestling skills to pass to side control or mount. He never just lays on an opponet and holds him down. He works to improve his position and strike at the same time. Matt Hughes takes both types of wrestlers in MMA and combines them to a degree where no matter how good your guard his, Hughes will find a way to pass it if you give him the chance; and if you don't give him the chance, he can still pound your face into the fence.

His guard and submissions: He has never caught a fighter with a submission but in his last few fights has shown he is definitly able to do so. Almost catching Carlos Newton in an armbar and Guillotine Choke and Sean Sherk in a Kimura/Armbar transition series Hughes has shown he can submit people (or at the very least score points with them). He escaped being mounted by Newton and never really let Sherk pass his guard.

Cardio: I don't need to say anything here. The guy is a machine. He can go for 25 mins and not even be breathing heavy. The guy does NOT get tierd.

Finishing ability: Out of his past 5 fights, only one has gone the full 5 rounds. He has finished such people as,
Hayato Sakurai, Gil Castillo and Carlos Newton TWICE. Also, save the first Newton fight and one submission attempt in thier second fight, he has never been in any danger at all.

Matt Hughes is simply the best pound for pound fighter in the world. Murilo Bustamante and Randy Couture have also been talked about as the greatest pound for pound fighters. However, for me there is no question. Matt Hughes is the best pound for pound mixed martial artist in the world today

i dont think he's the BEST p4p....he is damn good

Who is better then? If its not Hughes, who else? Bustamante is the only other serious challenger, maybe Randy.

Matt has beaten all but one of the top 5 guys in the WW divison and he is fighting the one he hasn't beat at the next show. And if you ask me, Trigg doesn't have a snowballs chance in hell

Randy and Bustamante, ok I can understand the argument there. Henderson, well if he beats Murilo than I can see that. Fedor is easily the most beatable person in that group and B.J well you can argue that he isn't even the number one lightweight. I think he is, but it wouldn't be unreasonable to claim another lightweight could beat him

honestly i don't care for hughes i think he's a boring fighter all he ever does is corner his oppenant against the cage and lay on them and throw elbow shots i've never really seen a real exciting fight with him involved

Hughes never justs lays on the guy. He always works to pass the guard. Passing the guard might on be the most exciting thing for most people, but I happen to enjoy a skilled wrestler passing to side control or steping thru to mount

Hughes is the best in his weight class. The best p4p fighter will be determined at the next Pride. Bustamante Vs. Henderson.....

Miletich in the day was the best p4p. He was one of the best well rounded fighters and one of the first to incorporate different types of martial arts in to his game.
