I sparred yesterday at school during our club's meet. This kid Brandon who's newer to the club, he's BIG. He weighs close to what I do, but he's about a full 2 inches taller than me, and I felt his power haha.
We sparred the first round, he was throwing some decent shots but I blocked/caught/rolled a lot of em, but he caught me a couple times. Nothing serious though. Once the 2nd round started, I could tell he was fatigued, he would throw about 4 or 5 big shots, and whether or not they hit, he could cut off and save up his energy, so I would come in throwing lead rights, left hooks, etc.
At the end of hte 2nd round, he hit me with a MONSTER right hand to my midsection, and I almost went down, luckily it was in the last 5 seconds of the round and once it ended, I was like "Holy ****..."
Quite interesting once you finally know what it feels like to be hurt, especially to the body. Although I did put on a nice performance ala Hopkins, he threw a big 1-1-2 and after I shoulder rolled the shots, I caught him FLUSH to the nose with a straight right hand. One of the best shots I ever threw I think :boxing:

It's always good to get hit hard at some point... It makes you wake up an think about not getting hit like that again.

Its a necessary evil getting hurt in sparring.
You can never experience anything you already have in a match. You should rethink your training if after a fight you say you have never been hit that hard.

You need sparring partners who will make you pay for your mistakes. It is the only way to learn to stop making mistakes. That is how you take your game to the next level.

It's horrible, first time I was hit hard in the neck I almost threw up.

yeah agreed. i got hit hard with a straight right yesterday during sparring, and it because of my bad habit of dropping my lead hand. its not a great amount that i drop my lead hand but its enough to get hit straight down the pipe. i'm pretty sure i will input my best effort for that not to happen again. i was doing pretty good on the heavy bag today keeping my hand up because that's where i developed my bad habit.

The guy in front of you could be bigger, stronger, faster and more skillful, yet it is still possible for you to beat him. What you need is consistency, and that comes from discipline. If you consistently keep your chin down, your guard up and move your head, you will consistently make it difficult for your opponent to hit you. When you give yourself the best chance to win, you give yourself an advantage because most of your opponents don't do that for themselves. They are always leaving themselves open to get hit, and then they wonder why they got hit. This is boxing and inevitably you are going to get tagged, but you don't have to make it easy.

Remember how Chris Arreola said that Witherspoon hit him with the "Oh ****."?
First time I got slipped up, got caught and was seriously hurt I said "oh ****" out loud. I know he heard me. Oh well I didn't go down and that guy sent two people to the hospital in the golden gloves tourney.
Been awhile since I got back in with him. Got some new stuff to use. :boxing:
