Since I'm not the only one who is interested in them (even if I'm the only one to raise the subject) what ones are you interested in or play in?

Everquest?
Ultima Online?
Asherons Call?
Star Wars Galaxies?
Neverwinter Nights?
Lineage?
Dark Ages of Camelot?
Sims Online? (not exactly an RPG I realise but it's an online game being more my point)

What games are you interested in playing?
Matrix Online?
Dungeons & Dragons Online?
Worlds of Warcraft?

Anything that gets you really hooked at playing games over the net with other people?

Interesting point. A lot of people feel that way.
Its for that reason I'm hesitant to do it unless I know it's a quality product.

UO & EQ has stood the test of time and proven they provide new content regularly and provide solid support and try to keep the costs low.

I mean I'm glad I didn't pounce on SW: Galaxies. I don't want to pay $20/month or whatever the fee is to be weaving bloody silk all day.

World of Warcraft because there is a good chance it will be free. Maybe over battle.net

Espically since blizzard always releases a quality product

The Jake

There is no way WoW will be free. No idea where you got that from, Creed. It's even on their website:

http://www.blizzard.com/wow/faq/

"Why isn't World of Warcraft free?
World of Warcraft will require a fee to play. This fee will be used to support the costs associated with the high-quality levels of service, support, and ongoing content creation that we are planning for World of Warcraft."

I think I've added my two cents on the subject for now. Don't get me started again. ;)

I would have, at one point, considered Middle-Earth online, then I found out Turbine was doing it. Turbine does Asheron's Call 2. Not too sure if I want to get involved with that again.
Not that I'm bashing the game. It's great and all, but it still needs a lot of work.
Regardless, it's keeping me entertained until Horizons next month.

The Jake
10-24-2003, 12:12 AM
Most game developers learn from their mistakes. I would wager Middle Earth Online would be much better than Asherons Call 2 but I'm going to hold out.

Same as Everquest 2. WoW will be the first MMORPG I'll be willing to buy and sign up for, sght unseen simply because I'd be willing to help beta test it if thats what they need. A lot of my friends in Aus will also be playing and it will be fun to play with them (I missed out on UO - whilst we were at university they all played UO whislt I was too busy juggling 32hrs/week work + full time university for the most part).

I am really spoiled with RPGs so something is going to HAVE to have awesome graphics, gameplay and sound to keep me hooked with a very well balanced environment and strong support. Blizzard have shown they have this and that will be why I go with WoW before any other IMHO.

Plus I've played P&P RPGs for so long, the degree of human interaction will have to approach that in order for me to be hooked I think.

I don’t care what people say. It's bull****. All they do is suck you out of realty and keep from having a normal social life. You sit there for hours and hours on end. You don't go out ever because you have to get to the next level.

It sad and ****ed up thing to do to someone. Those game makers should be shot and killed for ****ing with peoples lives.

Don't get me wrong I like RPG's a lot. But that **** is ridiculous.

The Jake
10-24-2003, 06:33 PM
Ruffneck-
I think it's the same as any hobby or interest - it's fine until it becomes an all consuming passion and you obsess over it and it comes at the expense of the rest of your life.

Bear in mind the retards that are *seriously* addicted to this **** (as opposed to those who just plain love to play) are probably the same percentage of people who would be just as readily addicted to other vices because of their personality type.

To attribute the addiction in this case to the makers is ludicruous.

- J.

Bella
10-24-2003, 06:36 PM
Exactly, The Jake.

Some people do get WAY into it. They live and breath it. Some people on AC2 are level 54 already. I've been level 49 for a couple of weeks now. I just get on in spare time. It's a nice escape from reality when I'm stressing over school or relationships. I just find it enjoyable and it's a fun hobby for me. I guess I could collect stamps or something instead...

Crystalline Dream
10-24-2003, 06:38 PM
you know, it's like that with everything. Drinking isn't bad, unless you don't do it responsibly. Just like everything else. As long as you are responsible with your playing habits, play on and ****.

The Jake
10-24-2003, 06:43 PM
Check the article I posted Bella.

It's a discussion on MMORPGs and areas for improvement if they want to make them truly enjoyable.

I feel so strong about it because one of my freinds play Everquest, it's the gayest thing ever. That fool has like 3 months of ****ing game time on that stupid, stupid game.

He won't go out with a lot of times because him and his gay ass guild are going to kill something. It's bull****.

I hate that crap, nothing good comes of it.

Crystalline Dream
10-24-2003, 07:28 PM
yeah, but at the same time, it's just like all three of us said, you have to be responsible about it. I've had friends die over drugs, and so I feel very strongy about drug use and responsibility. But hey, if you can usa alcohol responsibly or pot, then have fun.

Bella
10-24-2003, 07:40 PM
Amen sister!

Bella
10-24-2003, 07:45 PM
I was just reading some posts on that last link you gave me, J, and it said something about women not enjoying it because it gets tedious and you need to be obsessive about it.
I don't agree with that. Sure, the games do take some time to learn and it does take alot of work to accomplish things, but that's the whole point of the game. I think so anyway. I enjoy having a challenge when I log into it. I enjoy killing **** and working to find better items for my toon and what-not. That's the whole point. It's an escape from reality for the short time I am
playing.
What is happening to me? ;)

Crystalline Dream
10-24-2003, 07:47 PM
lol, I've always LOVED RPG games, even before the net came out. Like Zelda, etc. I hated playing the fighting games because my siblings were so much better at them than I, (I kick their asses now) so I like the one player games that took time to figure out. I can't wait for the new rpg games coming out on XBox, like the one that the game changes with the choices you make, so every time you play it, the game is unique. Can't remember the name atm.

Bella
10-24-2003, 07:49 PM
I don't know if I will ever get into the whol XBox and PS2 online thing...
Wow, technology is insane.
I think I'll stick with PC games for now.

Crystalline Dream
10-24-2003, 07:50 PM
Fable, I think it's called.

Crystalline Dream
10-24-2003, 07:51 PM
Fable is a ground-breaking role-playing adventure game from Peter Molyneux, in which your every action determines your skills, appearance, and reputation.

Create your life story from childhood to death. Grow from an inexperienced adolescent into the most powerful being in the world. Choose the path of righteousness or dedicate your life to evil.

Muscles expand with each feat of strength; force of will increases with each work of wit. Obesity follows gluttony, skin tans with exposure to sunlight and bleaches bone-white by moonlight.

Earn scars in battle and lines of experience with age. Each person you aid, each flower you crush, each creature you slay, will change this world forever.

Fable: Who will you be?

I didn't realize this was out! I gotta go buy it

Bella
10-24-2003, 07:55 PM
Sounds like it might be promising. :)
Let me know how it is. I don't own an XBox, but my brother does.
Maybe I'll get him the game for Christmas and just go over and play it... and drink beer. ;)

Crystalline Dream
10-24-2003, 07:57 PM
hahaha, sounds like awesome time spent. I was supposed to go out tonight with this guy but I think I'm going to convince him to stay in with me to play this game, eat pizza and drink beer too... haha, I doubt it will be that hard to convince him

Bella
10-24-2003, 07:59 PM
I would much rather stay in and do something like that, then go out anyway.

BTW, I like your avatar. It's so "emo"

The Jake
10-24-2003, 08:05 PM
Anything by Peter Molyneux is good.
Populuous,
Magic Carpet,
Syndicate,
Dungeon Keeper,
the list goes on.

He is a gaming god. One of the few in the industry whose name is synonymous with good games.

The Jake
10-24-2003, 08:18 PM
My biggest reason for MMORPGs and NWN atm (apart from a desire to get into the gaming industry?) ... well I got a few.

Biggest one, it's hard for me to organise my old RPG group like I had in Australia. This used to be my outlet. For a bit of a escapism and my primary means of socialising.

I had two seperate group of friends I would game with on a regular/semi regular basis.
It was as much a social event as it was a gaming event.

I'm with Bella. I'd rather do this than go out really. I don't like people by and large and find most to be really rude and ignorant. I'd rather be in a setting or environment surrounded by people I like to hang out with and be sure we're going to have fun. At the very least, hang out with people like minded.

I don't like drinking (often) and I don't like partying hard (often). If I do either, I make sure it's damn worth my effort and time and I'm guaranteed to have fun.

If people want to call that nerdy well they can go **** themselves.

We were never any of those LARP people getting dressed up and ****. We were too busy laughing hard to take anything so seriously - including our roleplaying.

Now I don't have that.

I don't get out much. I don't get to socialise often. I don't get to roleplay, so I have **** all escapism.

I know people who want to but due to a multitude of factors, tabletop roleplaying is out (for now).

This is the next medium and conquers many of the issues we face (distance being a big one). Blake ain't always going to be up for an hour plus drive just to roleplay every week or every second week, nor is it fair to make him drive. Nor is it practical for those of us in LA county to make the drive to Orange County (if there's more than two of us).

Another reason: many of my friends played when I was at university. I always wanted to get into it but I never had time. I was working 32 hours a week for the most part, had full time univeristy, trained 4 days a week minimum religiously except at exam times and I had a girlfriend. Basically, I missed out. on a lot of fun times because I was too busy. Yes, I regret that. People talk about how much fun uni is well I really missed that, for the most part. After graduation I hardly saw them, we occasionally chatted, emailed or visited, but that was it. Online gaming is one of the few ways we've been able to connect.

My friends don't play as much anymore but they're hanging out looking for the one good MMORPG - and we've all got our eyes fixated on WoW. If it is that good, I will be able to play with my friends that I can't see anymore and get some roleplaying in as well has have fun.

Again, you want to call me sad for wanting to hang with my mates despite the fact they're 9,000 miles away? You want to call me sad for wanting to have fun? Well again, **** you.

Now that my home LAN is setup I'm hoping to introduce Arju to this too and hope she will have as much fun as I will playing this game. I want to do something with my wife that is *GASP* non-sexual and is mentally and socially engaging.

Does any of this make me sad?

No. It makes you sad for not having someone you can share **** with or challenge you in more ways than one.

You need to understand Ruffneck there are numerous reasons for people wanting to play these games and to make carte blanche statements based on your encounter for one individual are pretty ****ing stupid.

Maybe there's a reason he doesn't want to hang with you and the game provides a convenient out for him? Ever think of that?

Age of Mythology was great

Rise of Nations was the best RTS game I ever played. Part Civilization, part age of empires

I never got into roleplaying because I'm lazy as hell, and I get tired of things fast. But oh God, I don't want to think of how many hours I clocked into Blizzard games from the age of 12-16, HAHAHA. Warcraft 2, then StarCraft, and then WarCraft 3... RTS's were my favourite. Don't play games anymore because I don't have the time.

i still play games sometimes but i can't get into online RPGs really.

i enjoy 1 player RPGs much more now. I used to be MADLY addicted to an online RPG and it almost ruined my life, thats all i'm going to say.

for now i'll stick to occasionally picking up an RPG and playing it on PS2 or Xbox (or pc just not online)

The other day I was at work, now I dunno if I mentioned it before but a large chunk of it is basically searching logs for who was using a specific IP address at a specific date and time. Usually it's some virus infected twat that needs to be LARTed and educated on patching their system or using anti virus software. Occasionally it's a spammer and I get fun cancelling their account or occasionally speaking to them. Or sometimes it might be a system that has been hacked or warning the parents of some kid who is trying to hack Diablo 2 BattleNet accounts. But normally it's just virus infected customers. Rather routine stuff as you can imagine.

And very very boring.

I sort of wound up in this line of work thinking it would be cool moving into IT security and stuff like that - and as you can imagine, being in that industry, it's not so bad. It's nice reading your department for being in the news as industry leaders in an industry (ie. anti spam/network abuse). It's a nice stepping stone into security. Why wouldn't I?

I was looking at all these security jobs beyond abuse and what sort of skills you need, and what the work entails. And it just seemed really bland and dry for some reason. Unless I was willing to get a job with the NSA or something like that and move to Virginia or someplace in the East Coast, it just wasn't going to work.

All I could think about is what I'd rather be doing.

I'd rather be building something, creating something enjoyable. I want to have fun in the process. I then read Masters of Doom and I thought "Now THAT is what I'd rather be doing." I want to make a mint or at the very least, live comfortably.

When I began university, all I wanted was my double degree in Literature and Computing. The literature major was to help me write, edit and know what makes a good story, and my programming degree to help me put it together. Then I started working at an ISP and forgot all about games. I knew guys who were network engineers, system admins, pre-sales engineers and making a decent living. So I focused all my skills on that, working the industry and then changing to straight computing just to get the hell out of uni and start making money.

Then 2000 hit, there was a flood of IT staff, salaries dropped, redundancy packages handed out. It ****ed it all up. So I've been kicking around various ISPs since, trying to get into an already swamped market.

I didn't even play computer games from 1995 until I graduated in 2001. Then playing Neverwinter Nights and looking up all the old games I used to play. I wondered why nobody makes them like they used to. I read Masters of Doom and it all came back to me - why I went to university and what I wanted.

I know people into programming in Australia. But trying to do that over the 'net is notoriously difficult. So I'm interested in designing some of my own games just to sharpen up on my coding skills and perhaps modding a few games like Neverwinter Nights or Unreal or Quake 3.

Maybe I can get a job in the industry. Maybe I can start my own company? I dunno. But I'm interested. All I know is that making games and shooting other staff with NERF guns, even if it means longer hours, is more enjoyable that having to get top secret security clearance just so I can manage a ****ing firewall for a bank or large corporation.

Nowhere near as lame as you posting a hundred pics of the same thing over and over because you don't want to type a single word in for confirming what the world already knows.

Game, set, owned.
