View Full Version : The Streets AKA Mike Skinner is awesome

Agreed?

It's funny because his music is just catchy but it isn't at all poppy. He has vision and his Birmingham accent gives him a lot of character. He's garage, I don't know why Americans try to classify him as a rapper because then he just doesn't make sense. Mike Skinner is Mike Skinner, nothing else.

Too bad he's a pill-popping moron though. Still, he's the man.

I like Blinded by the Lights and Push Things Forward most.

Is he known in America??

He's ok I guess, i like a few of his songs. On the other hand, my mate asked if i fancied seeing the Streets next month..and i said "Nah... i can't be arsed."

They're ok. There are better British rappers though.

I'd class him more as a poet, his new album is a return to form. Lead single below

Urban street poet?

Original Pirate material and a Grand don't come for free are both uniquely awesome, and undoubetedly two of my favourite and only best records of that genre.

He does kind of rap, and he's white. Is he a wigger? **** no. Does he try to be a wigger? **** no. He's a middle lower borderline chav writing about his ordinary life (Up to the third album) and he's ****ing genious.

A grand don't come for free is an amazing concept album, and at the times the simplicity, and story telling is unparralled.

The story on paper sounds really ****, but translates amazingly well to an album; Lose a bag of sand, meeting a girl, assessing gambling problems, Getting ****ed on drugs, appreciating your bird, falling out with your bird, on the pull on holiday, get caught cheating/fa;; out with your bird/ find out your best mate's shaging your bird. And finally sorting it out and omving on.

Each song is genious in it's own way, I've already blabbed on too much about the streets and perhaps haven't articulated myself very well but in conclusion the first two albums are brilliant, and have opened my eyes to music that aint guitar dominant.

He isn't known in America but through the power of Youtube, my musical tastes are no longer bound by borders and oceans.

Horrendous in my opinion. 'Dry your eyes mate' reminds me of times spent in the park years ago with the lads on cheap lager and the birds on lambrini.

Nice Rollins avatar.

I dont like the streets music personally, but i appreciate he is different and talented. He's not trying to be the british Eminem. There is no stupid ****ing false accent or attitude.

He is good for music. And he lools like my cousin.

That's half the genius surely. Granted it is a top 10 chav anthem that should be played on every bus in England, but if you can look past it. The songs pure melancholy, and tear rendering! Feel the emotion man.

No Mockney accent?

I like that he isn't trying to be anything other than a dude from England. If he started wearing ridiculous sunglasses and puffy jackets, that would suck.

Dry Your Eyes is some pretty real ****, I can see though why chavs would like it LOL.

But he is mockney wen he talks. He is 24/7 mockney.

I think i may be guilty of a bit of mockneyage from time to time. Especially when buying drugs or talking to builders.

The Streets are one of my favourite bands. Original Pirate Material is truly awesome, a Grand Don't Come For Free very good and the subsequent two, while nowhere near as good as his previous efforts not as bad as they sometimes made out to be. I like Hardest Way better than the latest one though, some of the lyrics on that are absolutely terrible.

Don't Mug Yourself is my favorite Streets tune. It's got a crazy beat and he's right, don't mug yourself thinking sweating homegirl is a good idea.

The Irony of It All brings out a lot of the demonization of drug users while not chastising the psychopaths of the world.

Yeah, I don't think real chavs like The Streets. REAL chavs listen ONLY to 'happy hardcore', which is easily the worst music in the world.

No not at all.

Chavs think he's one of them. Everyone else knows he'sjust making a commentary!

Prodigy used to be proper hardcore rave back in the early 90's. They became more commercial (still ****in good) when they git bigtime. But there early stuff is some of the original rave music.

Obviously now down the years its progressed and has got a lot harder down the years!
