View Full Version : tommy hearns is the greatest 140 and 147 pounder ever
acquitted 11-04-2004, 08:50 PM who agrees..maybe u say leonard beat him...hearns was handing leonard his ass in the first fight..the pro-leonard crowd and ref..when leonard started his little flurry they stopped the fight...the 2nd fight hearns got ripped off
oldgringo 11-04-2004, 09:05 PM I wouldn't say he is the man at 147 all time, he's certainly up there however. Had he held up and finished the first SRL fight his legacy would be much greater today. He was also whored in their second fight so who knows. He is certainly one of the most skilled fighters I have ever seen.
Sir_Jose 11-04-2004, 09:21 PM Ray Robinson is hands down the #1 guy all time at 147.
But I would put Hearns top 5
loangunZ 11-04-2004, 09:40 PM I agree to a point, I mean the way he come on and flatout knocked people out was amazing
Tommy Hitman Hearns was a great fighter at 140-7 but certainly not the greatest. He had a vicious right hand and some serious power in the left as well. He was some kind of natural freak as well if you look at his size and how his skinny legs allowed him to fight in these weightclasses. However his chin and his not above average defense let him down in my eyes. If his opponents let him go he went on his destruction path but against a true warrior or a master boxer he had his problems.
Tha Greatest 11-04-2004, 11:20 PM the hitman is one of my fav fighters ever def top 5
MikeHunt 11-05-2004, 12:32 AM The Hitman never fought at 140 so you may as well call him the best lightweight too? He was 1 for 2 in his only meaning ful welterweight fights. Ko'd Cuevas and was Ko'd by Leonard.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the hell out of his career but the best?

What? A fighter from the 80s being the greatest at 147? Impossible.
In all seriousness, Hearns was simply a beat at 147. His combination of speed, boxing ability, and power probably exceeds that of anyone who previously fought at welterweight. However, i wouldn't call him the greatest. That distinction goes to Sugar Ray Robinson. If i remember correctly, i have Hearns around 7 or 8, with Robinson, Armstrong, Leonard, and Walker definately ahead of him.

I AGREE!!!! the first fight was halted prematurely by the ref and the 2nd fight was a clear robbery .
In an interview after the 2nd fight Leonard was asked. 'Do you feel Lucky that you got the draw?' :D :D
FistoftheDallasStar 11-05-2004, 04:07 AM Tommy was one of my favorite fighters to watch. I consider him one the best at 140 and 147. His right cross was unmatched cuz if he connected with it cleanly you were going down. He also in my opinion had the best nickname ... Thomas "The Hitman" Hearns. Great fighter.
JOM'S 11-05-2004, 06:11 AM Sugar Ray Leonard is one of my favorite fighters of all time, and I could not think of him without thinking of Duran, Hagler and The Hit Man.....
For me they are definetly up there among the greatest at 140-147 lbs....

jabsRstiff 11-05-2004, 07:42 AM Acquitted....
You speak so much without knowing a damn thing.
First off...Hearns @ 140 ? If you could get me a tape of some of his big wins at that weight, I'd appreciate it. Good luck !
As for his fight with Leonard...
It's one of the best fights you'll ever see....but where do you get this "one little flurry" **** from ?
Ray battered Hearns in the thirteenth, dropping him twice (though one was ridiculously not ruled as such).
If you look at that round now, you'd easily score it a 10-7.
Leonard than picked back up where he left off, putting it to a super-game Hearns.
Did Davey Pearl stop it a bit prematurely ? Yeah, but Hearns was NOT going to survive. He was finished.
So, go watch this great fight again, & use your brain once in a while 'round here. Thanks.

Mr. Jabs has KO'D the CORRECT with this great passage...
GREAT FIGHTER BUT BEST EVER NO CHANCE.
Sugar ray Robinson is the best ever Welter who drew breath.
realtim 11-05-2004, 09:47 AM Sugar ray best welterweight period Walker could be up there as well and henry armstrong,
Tommy hearns was powerful and he is up there on the lists
tommy chin lets him down though, sht man if he had had a decent chin we coudlda been looking at one of the all time DOMINANT greats though probably at light middle / middle for my money.
as it was he is just a great but not the man in any one division.
i loved watching him though, simply loved watching him that right hand ouch, a thing of beauty unless you were unliucky enough to be in the other corner.
I watched his demolition of Duran the other day (ive got it on dvd) **** no one did that to Duran, it s was an annhialation. awesome.

LMAO, Exactly!!!
The two Sugars, Robinson and Leonard are clearly at the top of the all time Welterweight list.
However, the Hitman may be the best Junior Middleweight ever.

no one ;)----------
Swifty 11-06-2004, 12:28 AM Overall Id have to say Sugar Ray Robinson is the all-time best welter-weight.
P.S the hitman was robbed in the second fight with leonard
