View Full Version : Blur or Oasis
Mr. Ryan 10-01-2008, 04:05 PM Which band was your favorite? Who do you feel came out on top in the Britpop wars?
My favorite personally was Blur, I think they are an amazing rock band and wonderfully inventive. Their light songs make you feel like everything is good in the world, that is until the song ends.
There's No Other Way, Parklife, Country House and Beetlebum are all awesome songs. Don't get me wrong, Oasis is cool too, I love Wonderwall, but to me they aren't on Blur's level.
What do you think?
Barndog 10-01-2008, 04:07 PM Easily Oasis.
As a northern boy - at our school. Anyone who liked Blur was a ****ing poof.

Yeah, Oasis did get the working class support because they were from Manchester and Blur were a bunch of college sissy boys, but I still like Blur more!
Spambo boy 10-01-2008, 04:09 PM Oasis, obviously. What a stupid question.
Patty Tanager 10-01-2008, 04:10 PM This was a rhetorical question, surely.
Barndog 10-01-2008, 04:10 PM Yeah, Oasis did get the working class support because they were from Manchester and Blur were a bunch of college sissy boys, but I still like Blur more!
Yeah, Blur were really gay.
Spambo boy 10-01-2008, 04:12 PM Is that Henry Rollins in your av?
Barndog 10-01-2008, 04:15 PM Is that Henry Rollins in your av?
Yeah, the worlds most angriest man. He gets me proper pumped up in the car before I go into Tesco to get some shopping done.
Like..
"excuse me.. can YOU TELL ME WHERE I'LL FIND THE MOTHER ****ING MILK!!!!?!???!"

Mr. Ryan 10-01-2008, 04:22 PM Yeah, Blur were really gay.
Does this make me a proper bender?
Barndog 10-01-2008, 04:24 PM From the Liar video, I presume?
Yeah thats Rollins Band.
They do better songs than that though. I'm a big fan.
Does this make me a proper bender?
Nah, i'm just pulling your leg. I think you're in the minority though, I presume most people prefered Oasis in the battle of the bands. They had more attitude.
I think songs like country house by Blur were ridiculously bad.
Mr. Ryan 10-01-2008, 04:27 PM Yeah thats Rollins Band.

I tend to find bad pop songs with a quirkiness to them very entertaining, like Parklife and Country House. For real, I just thought that's what British music was about LOL. I like Oasis, but it's just not my thing, ya dig?

Parklife was a good song... in a way. I liked the video.
I thought you were a Limey...
Oh well. Blur are a good band, i just prefered the very early stuff...and possibly a few of the later tunes. Like that one where the video is set on a British Navy Vessel (anyone know?!?!)

Nah I'm not a Limey, atleast not really. I'm Filipino-American from New Jersey with Scottish/Italian/Irish heritage in there as well.
I gotta look up that video, not sure what you mean.

Out of Time it's called.
****in hell! You Yanks are a right bunch of mongrels. haha.
Barndog 10-01-2008, 04:43 PM You heard of Supergrass?
Mr. Ryan 10-01-2008, 04:49 PM You heard of Supergrass?
Yes, but I don't listen to them as much as I do Eksman and Herbzie.
msagrain 10-01-2008, 04:58 PM Close but Oasis. You sould of added The Verve to the poll.
Mr. Ryan 10-01-2008, 05:06 PM Close but Oasis. You sould of added The Verve to the poll.
I thought they were a one-hit wonder, I didn't really think they'd be in the conversation.
Nicky_Hatton 10-01-2008, 05:07 PM People assume that the bigger band (Oasis) are better because they go down the pub and hear cigarettes and alcohol. They also have loads of "Anthems" and great sing along songs.
Oasis populairty lies to the working class simplicity, and the whole bunch of lads mentaliity, and the outrageousness of Noel and Liam. Not to mention popularising plagiraism.
Definitely maybe and What's the story are both two fantastic albums, but the rest of their stuff is no where near this level, and is dare I say ****.
Whereas Blur where the much better band musically, and seemed to aspire to better things and weren't afraid to change their style and reinvent themselves. The variety of their greatest hits says it all compared to Oasis. Graham Coxon is also massively underratted as well as Albarns lyrics.
The number Decent blur songs easily outnumbers the number of decent Oasis songs.
Oasis was the battle of brit pop, Blur won the war.
There

Agreed, they were The Grade B band of the 90's as well as Supergrass, Pulp etc.

There
Awesome, great post. Blur did a lot of different things, some I liked and some I dislike, but still they were able to experiment with good results. Oasis just seems like pub music where you get trashed, smack your brother and sing along to Wonderwall LOL
I love Blur, sorry.

I like both, being a product of the 90's.
That is basically what Oasis two albums were about though;
definitely maybe was about ****in; having it. Early on in the evening getting the first pint in.
Whats the story was more getting dumped, and closing time when you're pissed, but are too sick of singing Angels.
I honestly haven't got a favourite Blur song, it changes regually. The greatest hits is all gold. End of the century for now though.

Right now I'm bumping Country House, Parklife and There's No Other Way. But yeah, I can listen to any Blur song and be cool.
msagrain 10-01-2008, 05:16 PM I thought they were a one-hit wonder, I didn't really think they'd be in the conversation.
You sould really download there new album right now.
Nicky_Hatton 10-01-2008, 05:25 PM Right now I'm bumping Country House, Parklife and There's No Other Way. But yeah, I can listen to any Blur song and be cool.
I find Country house, and the really brit poppy stuff a bit tiresome if I'm honest, it's not as enduring the rock stuff such as coffee and Tv, BeatleBum, Tender. **** just changed my mind Tender/ Beatlebum are my favourites.
Do you like Pulp as well?
You sould really download there new album right now.
I thought you wanted to disprove they were one hit wonders? :-P
AntonTheGreat 10-01-2008, 05:37 PM Yeah, the worlds most angriest man. He gets me proper pumped up in the car before I go into Tesco to get some shopping done.
Like..
"excuse me.. can YOU TELL ME WHERE I'LL FIND THE MOTHER ****ING MILK!!!!?!???!"
:haha::haha:
personally, i never like damon.i hate his ****ing voice.
dr.archives 10-01-2008, 05:40 PM I really liked Blur’s first album and then I lost track of them and picked them up again with Parklife. I thought they were okay but nowhere close to my favourite band the Stone Roses. Then I heard the first Oasis album, loved it and also liked What’s the Story Morning Glory. At the time I though Oasis were better than Blur but as Oasis’ albums got worse I gave early Blur a re-listen and realized Blur were a better band (at least in my opinion). Don’t get me wrong, the right time and right place and there’s nothing like an early Oasis song but for listening to a full album or consistency over time, I would have to go with Blur.

Coffee and TV is an awesome song, simply amazing. That was one of my favorite songs from them until I played it too many times. Beetlebum was also once my favorite song from them for a long time, but that too was played out LOL. I go in cycles with Blur. Tender, to be honestly it isn't my joint personally.
I have never heard of Pulp, which songs should I download?
Oasis by a mile. Arguably one of the best bands since the 70's.
Elvis The King 10-01-2008, 05:47 PM Sweet dont go for Pulp, you have to really be into that sort of stuff to appreciate it.
Disco 2000 is a good song, but the rest of their stuff is a bit too pretentious for my tastes!
dr.archives 10-01-2008, 05:49 PM I couldn't get into Pulp. Anyone like the Charlatans?
Clegg 10-02-2008, 01:19 AM I thought they were a one-hit wonder, I didn't really think they'd be in the conversation.
BOOOOO
3 great albums, 1 fairly good album, 4 top 10 sings, 1 very good solo album from the lead singer...
Anyway, I voted for Oasis, although they haven't had more than 3-4 good songs in the past 10 years.
I thought you wanted to disprove they were one hit wonders? :-P
Yeah, that's why he suggested downloading their new album, which got to number 1 in the charts, thus disproving the one hit wonder claim ;)
I have never heard of Pulp, which songs should I download?
Disco 2000, Common People, Do You Remember The First Time?, Underwear, Something Changed, Pencil Skirt, Mis-Shapes.
The leader singer (Jarvis ****er) has a solo album. Don't Let Him Waste Your Time and Heavy Weather are probably the best songs, although the entire album is pretty solid.
abadger 10-02-2008, 01:25 AM Definitely Maybe is better than anything Blur ever did, but Parklife is better than any subsequent Oasis album, including Morning Glory. Blurs later albums are also much to superior to all of Oasis's later ones, which are gash.
But I only award marks for consistency to one Joseph Calzaghe, in music its about the heights you can hit. Oasis are a better band than Blur.
abadger 10-02-2008, 01:28 AM Does this make me a proper bender?
Liking My Chemical Romance makes you a proper bender.
Clegg 10-02-2008, 01:33 AM Anyone got any love for Suede?
abadger 10-02-2008, 01:35 AM Anyone got any love for Suede?
Not me, though I do think the first supergrass album is very good. Who remembers Menswear?
Clegg 10-02-2008, 01:39 AM Not me.....
Clegg 10-02-2008, 01:41 AM When you raise your pencil skirt,
like a veil before my eyes,
like the look upon his face as he's zipping up his flies.
Oh I know that you're engaged to him.
Oh but I know that you want something to play with baby.
I'll be around when he's not in town,
I'll show you how you're doing it wrong,
I really love it when you tell me to stop.
Oh it's turning me on.
You can tell me some lies,
about the good times that you've had,
but I've kissed your more than twice,
and now I'm working on your Dad.
Oh baby.
I'll be around when he's not in town,
I'll show you how you're doing it wrong,
I really love it when you tell me to stop.
Oh it's turning me on.
If you look under the bed,
then I can see my house from here,
so just lie against the wall,
and watch my conscience disappear now baby
I'll be around when he's not in town,
I'll show you how you're doing it wrong,
I really love it when you tell me to stop.
Oh it's turning me on.
I only come here cause I know it makes you sad.
I only do it cause I know you know it's bad.
Oh yes I know,
that it's ugly and it shouldn't be like that.
Oh but oh it's turning me on.
abadger 10-02-2008, 01:41 AM Not me.....
They were a fake britpop band, seemingly modelled after Suede. Their arrival marked the beginning of the end.
Oasis_Lad 10-02-2008, 02:05 AM Ah, Lord Abadger and Lord Clegg arise during the night to drain NSB Virgins of their blood.
Clegg 10-02-2008, 02:10 AM Laddie, have you seen the state of the Aussie Lounge? The spammers don't have the balls to put out a hit on this place.
Unless they did and you already got rid of it.
Oasis_Lad 10-02-2008, 02:12 AM They wouldn't dare. Not with me around.
So, Doesn't the Aussie Lounge had Mods?
Clegg 10-02-2008, 02:17 AM Yeah, MSagrain and Mickeyb.
Kinda like having David Blunkett as a night watchman.
Oasis_Lad 10-02-2008, 02:23 AM Haha.
MickeyB and MSagrain.
I might send me trousersnake down just to sort things out.
Them spammers will creep across the perimeter and say "Strewth! there's a big snake an' make no mistake about it.
Let's hop on a dingo an get tha 'ell out a 'ere."
Laddies trousersnake 1 spammers 0.
black.ink 10-02-2008, 07:28 AM Oasis for me. Although Blur were far more creative, especially their later stuff. I hate it when people compare these two bands. They're not even the same genre. What the hell is brit-pop?
Couple british bands i'd like to throw in are Ocean Colour Scene and The Bluetones. Ah, to be in the 90s again.
Barndog 10-02-2008, 09:08 AM I'll sort out the spamming.. i don't like being called David Blunkett. :(
Clegg 10-02-2008, 09:12 AM Lol sorry Mick.
What I meant was that your old account is like David Blunket, as it too no longer has a part to play in UK politics.
Barndog 10-02-2008, 09:16 AM Lol sorry Mick.
What I meant was that your old account is like David Blunket, as it too no longer has a part to play in UK politics.
Deleted a load of threads. It looked pretty ridiculous in there. I think the advertisers realised if they wanted to sell penis pills to the inadequate they should focus on the Ozzies. LAWL.
My friend actually thought David Blunkett was fond of dogs. Not blind.

Innit mate?
abadger 10-02-2008, 10:09 AM Innit mate?
Safe mate, safe.
Tuggers1986 10-02-2008, 12:39 PM Oasis by a mile.
The Iron Man 10-02-2008, 02:45 PM Gotta Be Oasis
Mr. Ryan 10-02-2008, 03:53 PM Safe mate, safe.
Do you go to the country? It isn't very far.
There's people there who will hurt you cos of you are.
dr.archives 10-02-2008, 03:59 PM Anyone got any love for Suede?
Suede were always a hit or miss for me. Some of their songs were amazing, others, what were they thinking?
Barndog 10-02-2008, 04:17 PM Suede were always a hit or miss for me. Some of their songs were amazing, others, what were they thinking?
Suede were ok. I prefered Mansun though.

Surely the best lyric is; (From that song)
Do you feel like a chainstore? Practically flawed!
Coxon wrote that tune I think, what a great line!
I've been lagging with this thread as internetrs busted, currently leaching of my naybors unsecured wonder.
Anyway I recommend Sweet that you download the following;
1. Ocean Colour Scene - songs for the front row (Greatest hits) Quite easily the most underratted band from the brit pop era. Seen them live twice so far and am seeing them in December lol.
2. Pulp - maybe slightly contentious, someone said don't bother but if you like Mike Skinner he;s kind of in the same vain. I say this loosely however. He's liek an oddball Skinner with a degree in some regards. Often same spoken delivery, and emphasis on lyrics. If you had to download one album make it; Different class, don't bother with pulp hits. Key Tracks; Disco2000, Mis-shapes and common people.
3. The Stone Roses got a mentioned here they are far superior to all of the 90's bands however. They arguable inspired Brit pop, and most definitely Oasis. (Ian Brown's ****y stage persona anyone)
You could class them as Brit pop as they';re last album second coming was 94? possible I can't remember of the top of my head. They have some amazing melodic tunes, and excellent musican ship. John Squire is god. If you want to check some key stuff out go for; I wanna be adored, She bangs the drums, Waterfall, Made of stone. Possible fools gold if you like 9 minutes of acid tripping.
dr.archives 10-03-2008, 10:36 AM I would totally agree. No band mentioned so far even comes close to the Roses. I listened to their first album a few days ago and it still stands up and it’s approaching 20 years old.

Me too, where you seeing them?? I'm going to Manchester.

****ing hell, it almost hard to believe that it's nearly 20 years old, then again it's also hard to belive that i'll be 18 in December. What an album. Full of tunes.
I listened to the Ocean Colour Scene, they're pretty good. I wasn't really feeling the Stone Roses or Pulp, too folky for my tastes.
Pulp and the Stones folky? :-S You got the right stuff mate?
Me too, where you seeing them?? I'm going to Manchester.
London I think, I couldn't tell you the venue mind my bro got the tickets he's the real fan.
Alexis Vastine 10-06-2008, 01:24 AM Bull**** music. I would sya Gorillaz are OK, but them 2 bands made a few good songs followed by alot of typically bull**** British rock music.
