Before MMA stood on it's own, it took the form of Catch Leagues. Pro wrestling promotions that did the real form of pro wrestling While yes, they started out with predetermined endings (which was decided by holding the real match in the back), they branched into more real competition.

Erik Paulsen is the first westerner to study Shooto, a derivative of Catch and Kickboxing.

Karl Gotch. The man who inspired the Catch Revival. Him and Billy Robinson taught the Japanese pro wrestling community the *****n Catch style.

If someone can show me video of a Sumo wrestler competing well in MMA, I would actually love to see it.
