Unfortunately for the church, I knew how to read and interpret what I read at an early age, and it didn't take long for me to see where what they say and what Jesus said are not always the same things. By the time I was 13 I had decided I could no longer get fleeced with the rest of the flock and went my own way.

Evengelicals, Baptists, etc, are no different. At the top of their rganizations, it's guys in $3,000 suits instead of funny hats and limos instead of the Popemobile.

They interpretted "as the laws of Man are the laws of God" to mean that anything that that spewed forth from the Papacy was the word of God. I would think that if God wanted a spokesperson, he wouldn't choose a half(?) senile old man in a funny hat who can barely even speak any more.
I also hate that they constantly have their hands out, like every other church. I dated a girl once, and she asked to please go to Sunday service with her and meet her preacher. I did, but I was soon unwelcome. The church she attended service was gorgeous, and came with a pricetag of $2.3 million dollars. This in an area where the average cost of a nice family home at the time was in the mid-50s. When the preacher told me that, my response was, "Wow. That could have built houses for about 40 families." I earned a dirty look for that.

Birth control is another huge issue I have with the Catholic Church. Do you really think Jesus wants people in undeveloped countries spitting out more children than the land can support so the children have to suffer in abject poverty and disease? Maybe I'm interpretting his words wrongly, but I don't think he was into that kinda thing.

The worshippers themselves carry a lesser blame because they are taught to worship in this way. Granted, like me, they could actually read the Bible and choose to interpret it themselves, but most people don't read it cover to cover and accept what the person who is teaching says it means.

When the pope came out and said that the pedophile priests can be forgiven in the eyes of god, but Adulterers, divorcees, and homosexuals cannot, then I knew that they had lost their frickin mind.

Or when the Papal response to the problem was to better identify homosexuals in the seminary and boot them out before they could mess with children? The overwhelming majority of pedophiles in prison are hetero, so I don't see the correlation.

My personal favorite Papal Bull, though, came out about 6 years ago, making Mary "Coredemptrix", putting her on an even par with Jesus.

guys, as you may know I'm not very religous at all. Im am marrying a girl whos family is hard core Christian. We live in San diego and her family lives in Kansas, bible belt country. 2 of her sisters are married to preachers. Her mom sent us a "Congratulations on your engagemet" card and it was full of bible stuff. It said that "she prays the lord will grant us a strong love" or something like that and that "its great to see the lords love bring two people together" and then she put some bible 3:11 thing in there at the bottom. I am going to Kansas after Christmas to meet them all and I dont know what to do. From talking to my gf, the family doesnt drink AT ALL and basically will frown upon anyone who does, so I cant even have a beer when Im there. I know Im going to be asked about my "relationship with the lord" while Im there and I want to answer honestly without offending anyone, and still going home with the blessing to marry their daughter. Its weird because Im not marrying her family, I am marrying her, but I know her familys approval is really important. Its so bad with her parents that she lies to her mom and tells her that she goes to church every Sunday so her mom doesnt worry about her.

Any advice on how to handle the situation?
