View Full Version : Who will carry the sport for the next 5-10 years?

I would currently have to go with Miguel Cotto.
He has got the youth, the chin, power and boxing skill. He definately has plenty
and Taylor . I still think Tito and De La Hoya can go on for a solid 5 years if they choose. Mayorga still has plenty left in the tank and we will soon discover if Mosely is going to be a candidate after his match with Winky. PACMAN is still young, and if Mayweather can get his head out of his a-s-s and keep out of prison, he can keep folks interested. But his commitment to the sport just isn't there. Frietas, Casamayor and Corrales could liven things up over the next 5 years in their divisions as well.

Wow, we agree on that one! I don't think it will be any HW out there, that's for sure. B-Hop will be out soon and he doesn't have the following. Tito will be around for a while but, alas, he, too, will run out of good fights just as B-Hop has. The future is in the lighter weights with Erik Morales, Chico, Cotto, Mayweather, Hatton (did I say that?!?), and Kermit Cintron.

Cotto is the brightest. He is going to be a beast.

Miguel Cotto is the next big thing in boxing. I think Jeff Lacy will also help keep the sport moving because although I'm not comparing them directly...he is very Tysonesque and has that big time KO power.

Thats is the million dollar question. I say boxing is in big trouble. Where have all the Wilfredo Gomez, Slavador Sanchez, Matthew Saad Muhammad, Sugar Ray Leonard etc gone.

After the olympics I thought Andre Ward could be a great fighter. But he'll have to earn it though. Pro boxing is a diffrent world, I hope he doesn't turing out to be like my hometown guy Ricardo Williams, because Ward has tons of potential.

Cotto Will probably be the champ to beat in the next 5 years

Chavez Jr. might be great, not as great as his dad but he seems special for a 18 year old kid.

Miguel Cotto
Jermain Taylor
PACMAN
Rafael marquez
Erik Morales

Definetly the young guns will carry the torch for the next 5 years, the five mentioned above are just but a few who possibly stand out among the rest....

Or maybe we will get lucky and have a bunch of great fighters to do this....

I agree with most of your choices. Cotto is promising and LAcy is too. Jermain Taylor will shine through i'm sure. Danny Green will be a consistant force. Manny Pacquaio will always be a contender. I think Floyd Mayweather is a little unpredictable in his career, he is the kind of fighter who i can imagine retiring after a few more big fights.

I'll agree with Lacy but Taylor needs to fight a true Middleweight first. We'll see how he handles Joppy. I think Tito would put it on Jermain, tho, and put him to sleep.

Just a comment on an earlier post regarding Trinidad v. Taylor....Trinidad hurts Taylor bad and quick...

Hopefully we will see that one some day.

the sport will be carried by the 130 to 140 pounders

PBF, Taylor, and possibly Sam Peter.
Cotto is overrated, but Peter might be also. We just gotta wait and find out.

Watch out for Vicente Escobedo and Abner Mares :boxing:
they may be nice prospects but a network has to promote them 2 cause if they dont, they wont be household names and nobody will want to see them fight, Oscar even in retirement can help carry the sport by the way hes recruiting fighters to his promotions and showcasing them

Floyd Mayweather and Jermain Taylor will be the two big name guys over the next five years.

boxerman
07-26-2005, 12:44 AM
Its going to be someone that the mainstream media really starts covering. Of course the 130 -147 lb guys will carry it in a boxing fan's eyes. However, that really doesn't matter when you are talking about broad support and coverage for the general public. Someone is going to have to be a Tyson like figure that just destroys people, or its got to be someone that people are already familiar with from the olympics. It has to be someone that the average joe stands around the water cooler on monday morning and talks about.

Therefore, I dont think anyone right now is going to carry boxing on their shoulders in the next 5 years. No heavyweight for sure ( unless Peter goes on a streak of about 10 KOs in a row), and I just dont know about Ward yet.

i would say floyd mayweather, but the non-boxing public REALLY doesnt like him.

so far, there is no boxer who is ready or capable of carrying this sport.

but the boxer who has the best chance at that is floyd mayweather.

Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto will carry boxing these next few years...Possibly Hatton but being british puts him at a disadvantage.

After those reigns most likely Andre Ward provided he develops well and the exposure he is getting is great. The thing with Ward though is that he will probably end up like Roy Jones in that the competition will be small. I could easily see in about 5 years Jeff Lacy vs Andre Ward provided Lacy reigns supreme that long.

i like Cotto for front-runner

then i see Taylor doin it big in the future,

pac can still do it,

plus i think Jeff Lacy has unreal marketing value,

Andre Ward too cause he's got a good fan-base early
