View Full Version : Army sign ups fall-out due to election results.
.::|ULTIMATE|::. 11-04-2004, 11:43 AM I recently talked to friend that told me last time she talked to her recruiter, the recruiter told her that a lot of people who had expressed real interest in joining have recently become dis-interested and the number 1 reason given was, fear of an un-needed war by Bush who just got re-elected.
techn9ne 11-04-2004, 12:13 PM was this meants as a news story or just something one person said?

just something an army recruiter said. Wondering if anyone else has heard the same. And could this mean that a draft might take place?
Bombardier 11-04-2004, 12:21 PM If the neo-cons have their way and Iran becomes a target, than absolutely, 100% for sure, there will be a draft.
Bush seems to want to concentrate on domestic issues for now (i.e. turning the States into a Christian Republic), so I think you can breathe easy for now.

Maybe it's me, but the reason I thought people signed up to the Army, other then the money, was to FIGHT!
Explosivo 11-04-2004, 12:27 PM Im shocked to see that there already is data stating that there has been a fallout in Army signups due to the election that happened TWO DAYS AGO!!!!!
Can someone say...BULL****?

Its not data, not like im giving u thousands of numbers or anything, just something a recruiter said about the people he was trying to get to sign up.

You said it yourself, "other than money".

Yea I know but read the headline you used for this thread.

Actually, most people join the service so they can get money for college or job training they might not otherwise get. During times of justifiable war, recruitment goes up, but a large percentage of this country sees no justification for this war in Iraq and a distrust for the real motivations.
With troops tasked to guard oilfield equipment and leaving weapons unguarded, it gives the perception that the real intent is oil, not democracy. Of course the midnight arrests and torture don't do much to change this perception.
When this war first started, and people thought that there might actually be WMDs, recruitment was high. Now it's seen to be a modern-day Vietnam from which we may never withdraw ourselves, and people are less willing to give their lives. Fully understandable.
abdiel2k3 11-04-2004, 01:09 PM i have a cousin
he was thinking about joining the marines
this was pre-iraq war
well he was signed up
he had already started a sort of pre-boot camp thing
where his recruiter would take a bunch of enlisties up to the mountain or parks to get them ready for boot camp
well anyways once talk of the war started
he told his recruiter how he wasnt so sure that the marines were the best thing for him
but he had already signed up and ****
but luckily the recruiter was kool
he said he understood and told him not be ashamed cuz quite a bit of the people who were enlisting had second thoughts becuz of a possible unessicary war
so the recruiter tore up his enlisting papers
thats my cuzns story
but i think he lied
he had a sort of ashamed look in his eye when he told me he wasnt goin to the marines no more
so i always tell him he had to blow the recruiter
lmao
Bombardier 11-04-2004, 01:15 PM Funny story about Army recruiting: a few years back, when the military was trying to drum up support in preparation for the current wars, it distributed a free 3D shoot-em up video game for PCs. The game was meant to give the players an idea of what life in the military was like. Of course the emphasis was on making the Army look just as "fun" as the most popular 3D video games. The amusing part is that the "deaths" shown in the game were made to look as non-bloody and non-violent as possible. I forget exactly what happened, but I think that the guys you shot in the game just disappeared or froze or something. No blood, no screaming in pain and agony, no nothin'. Ironically, this made the supposedly "realistic" Army game the most unrealistic 3D game out there.
jabsRstiff 11-04-2004, 01:34 PM To play that game....did you have to get up before the crack of dawn, down ****ty rations all day, hump around with a ton of gear, have someone yelling at you....all the while in some stinking hot, T.V.-free desert ?

The election was not mentioned as the "cause" in the original post, it was the un-needed war in Iraq.
Here in Canada, it has been long-known that recruiting has fallen off specifically in response to Iraq. Conversly, when Canada committed troops to Afghanistan recruiting here remained steady. Even after four Canadian boys were killed by a US pilots' friendly fire, recruiting remained steady according to my soldier brother of 20+ years. However, with the commencement of action in Iraq, our federal Gov't has confirmed reduced recruitment despite the Govt's stepped-up efforts.
Could be that this is also happening in the US.
jabsRstiff 11-04-2004, 01:43 PM Pat Tillman died fighting in AFGHANISTAN....not Iraq.
Going to Afghanistan compelled this guy to turn down a big pro football contract.
Would he have done the same to go fight in Iraq ?
Maybe it's me, but the reason I thought people signed up to the Army, other then the money, was to FIGHT!
Rick, I'm guessing that your response was a bit tongue-in-cheek. But, in reality, "action" (or, Fighting) is pretty much the last thing that recruiting teams mention when enticing potential recruits. Also, the new armed forces are seen as a Professional Army with progressively greater needs for high-tech types and arms-length soldiers.
My father was in the Italian Campaign
There will always be those who want to "fight" first and above all other things, but that is probably not on the mind of boys with no education, little employment
