View Full Version : Are weights bad for you
Bobby Shaw 09-16-2008, 02:22 PM Guys I push weights and do loads of jogging.Problem is I like 84kg weight, thats my optimum but I'm a stone over.Losing that stone is the hardest thing even though I do a 5 mile jog every other day.
I have tried a few diets but seems like they dont help me as such.Do you think the weights are bad for me because I keep gaining muscle.

It takes MONTHS to gain a few lbs of muscle so it isn't that. Try running 3 miles every day instead of 5 miles every other day. or maybe instead of jogging start doing sprints. Sprint for a minute then jog for 3minutes. Do this 10 times. If you shock your body you should start losing weight again. Give yourself Sundays off. Stop eating carbs and start taking in plenty of protein. Eat in the morning to kick start your metabolism and eat less at night. You don't need a diet, just eat right and exercise.

I've been lifting weights for a long time now.My muscles have a memory if I go back to the gym I gain weight fast. That protein diet only makes me bigger, within a week my biceps wont be fitting in my shirt.
The jogging ,I actually sprint a lot,the reason I alternate is because i try to fit in the gym on other days.
Alexis Vastine 09-16-2008, 07:17 PM Yes they are! They will make you slow too, like robocop and will make you hungry and fat. weights will make it hard for a boxer to make weight. it's quite simple really!

ignorance at its finest.
Alexis Vastine 09-16-2008, 07:26 PM the truth hurts. It hurt Ali's victims too as he did no weights and was very fast. heavy weights will make you slow: FACT! Light weights are an easier alternative to calisthenics. Weights are for bums who like shortcuts. Don't be bitter that i can do pull ups, dips, squat thrusts and press ups instead. Like a real man!
Calisthenics will make you more explosive. every single one of them exercises makes you more explosive than when doing the equivalent in weight training. you're moving your own doby wieght through space which makes more fucntional strenght.
even if you wanted to add mass, it is better to get a dipping belt than a ****ty bench! So even if you want to do weights, calisthenics is the best. For non HW boxers, there is no need for a dipping belt until you retire.
peewee1460 09-16-2008, 07:28 PM yeah because floyd mayweather, he's a sloth in the ring. those weights just robbed him of every ounce of speed.

I need to say, every single post of yours is utter stupid. Refrain from posting on topics you don't know about, which basically means don't post at all.
There is a huge difference between bodybuilding and lifting weight to gain strenght and explosiveness.
Bobby Shaw 09-17-2008, 09:53 AM @ least Alexis is explaining what he thinks rather than some posters who just criticise him.It would help if people explained why they think weights are good or bad, exactly what weights do to you.
Seselj 09-17-2008, 10:07 AM do like tuggers said and don't listen to others... tuggers said it exactly as i would and that's the best way... also do loads of abs every day...

Your arms might be pumped but your arms will not GROW that much in a week. It just doesn't happen. Try halving the weight you lift but doubling your reps.

I agree, that tuggers is one smart boy.
And for the thread starter... I said eat less carbs and more protein so then when you work out your body will not have any carbs to burn for energy, so it will then burn fat and you will lose weight.
It's pointless asking for advice and then disagreeing with the people who know what they're talking about. No offence but just from the fact you think you are gaining muscle mass in days/weeks instead of months/years just shows you're naive and don't really know what you're talking about.
The_Golden_Boi 09-18-2008, 11:27 AM I wouldn't say weights are bad for you, i believe they give strength if used correctly, when i use them they do bulk me up to a certain piont, but thats just my body getting used to lifting them in the first place.
If you want strength i would use them sometimes though it can take away speed but it doesn't with all boxers, so its really how you feel when you are lifting and training,:boxing:

I was only speaking about my experience, what I see.I've been going to the gym for years and I've never really taken like a 2 or 3 month break.Everytime I go back its back to business and the muscle memory thing is a substantiated fact by science

Is 3 miles enough cardio?I know Tyson used to run 3 miles as well but then he would be in the gym all day.For a working professional who spents the whole day on the pc would that be fine?
Please dont take this the wrong way, just trying to get full understanding.

Do the math;
5 miles every other day = 5 miles in two days
3 miles every day = 6 miles in two days
The real point is that cardio should be all about intensity. The longer you run (at a time) the lower your intensity will be.
Salty 09-20-2008, 06:36 AM Weights are fine if you use them properly and know your goals. Compound movements (olympic style lifts, etc) are perfect for boxing, they build explosiveness through the core and maximal strength. Try doing 1 arm snatch, 3-4 reps with your 5 rep max weight per arm, 60 seconds rest between sets and then another variation with the same forumla. That's a good starting formula for strength gains (not hypertrophy), remember you need to increase your maximum strength before you can greatly improve you power. It's like people whinge about Isometrics claiming they can make you slow and reduce range of motion. They do, but only for those who don't utilise the exercise properly, ie with a good stretching routine and plyometrics work in combination with the iso's.
Also be warry of a constant high protein low carb diet (adkins) as they do hell to your kidneys. I believe mr Adkins death was partly due to kidney failure... Simple way, get one of those online calculators for daily calorie intake, take 500 calories off a day, you lose a kilo a week if you stick to the diet and continue to exercise.

Alexis Vastine is that Rafael Benitez guy who got banned a while back
ironmike2008 09-20-2008, 11:44 AM The Rafael Benitez gimmick was one of the funniest ones I have seen on the internet.
Alexis Vastine 09-20-2008, 02:28 PM heavy weights will make you crave protein and will make you fat hungry bulky and slow. Light weights are are ok but a shortcut for bums who can't do the hard work of calisthenics.

shut the **** up

do some research
Alexis Vastine 09-20-2008, 04:51 PM I've done plenty. Old school trainers have known this for a long time and no amount of pseudo science will change it. heavy weights make it hard for you to make weight too, and make people crave protein AND carbs as the muscles become starved and need to recover. They recover BIGGER, which is obvious. Bigger means bulkier and slower and above the weight. It is pretty ****ing obvious. Even qualified personal trainers admit it.

i knew it!! i was about to start a thread about it lol
the same annoying posts and arrogant manner

Go home kid. :loser:
amigo135 09-21-2008, 04:35 AM 'm pretty sure up to a certain point, weight lifting won't slow u down as lon as your weightlifting to built strength rather than bulk up. so if your aiming to be a boxer i recon strength training should be ok, just keep sparring, hitting the speed bags, shadowboxing and if u ever feel like your slowing down, just stop.
and i've seen some trainers who would actually have their students stop weight lifting two weeks b4 a fight, they reckon that would be enough time for them to return to their "normally" fast speed.
ironmike2008 09-21-2008, 10:22 AM shut the **** up
Shut your mouth you pathetic lame/
Rafael Benitez >
ironmike2008 09-21-2008, 10:27 AM And if you build mass, then work on speed and explosiveness, what's the problem? You can still be fast.
Alexis Vastine 09-22-2008, 07:38 PM it is kinda obvious that heavy weights will make you slow. i never said anything abou tlight weights. People who pump iron alot are always soft as ****. We had a scrap in Sunday League and a 9 stone guy put down a meathead with just energy and speed it was funny. he was not a trained fighter either. I jabbed a nizel and bust his nose so he ran away saying he didn't want to fight. I hunted him down! We lost the match but won the brawl, hurray!
