I bin trying to keep in decent shape just in case, but Im not sure if people would consider me kind of old to be entering the golden gloves at 22. I know its legal, but is it kind of old?

Unless there is a legal age restriction, which you said there isn't, I say that you're only too old for Golden Gloves if you're too old for boxing, and you're never too old for boxing. Forget about age. If you want to fight, you fight. If you don't, you don't.

I am 30 and I was in the Chicago Glove last year, and will do it again this coming year. My wife is 33 and she was in it too. You’re never too old!! I do think at 34 they try to make you fight in the Master division, but I am not sure.

It all depends on your habits, background, lifestyle and athletic potential. What is written in your genes has a lot do do with what you will achieve if you make the effort. Nevertheless, if you are wondering if you are too old it probably means you are.

Age is whatever you think it is. You are as old as you think you are.

Master Division starts at age 35. There are different rules for Masters, among them: 90 second rounds, 16 oz. gloves, limited standing 8's IIRC, and you can't fight anyone more than 10 years older or younger than yourself. There is also an annual physical and it's pretty strict: heart rate, BP, medical history, EKG for fighters over 45.

Some GG tournaments now have a Master Division. Ringside Nationals also has a Master Division.

Also, Master Boxers from my gym are getting fights in Canada against non-Master opponents. I don't know exactly how that works, but my understanding is, they're recorded fights and go in their passbooks. After watching a 43-year-old Master Boxer get trounced by a 19-year-old who just ****ing outworked him from the first punch -- the 19 year old came at him like one of those zombies out of 28 Days Later and kicked his ass relentlessly -- I decided to stick to Master Division matches. The reason we fight in age brackets is similar to the reason we fight in weight classes.
