View Full Version : Feel disapointed
Catmeat 09-10-2008, 04:07 PM Today was like my second time sparring, as im the biggest guy in my gym i dont often get to spar as nobody is my size, but today they found 2 guys who were willing to spar, opening round my nose bust and blood was dripping everywhere, pretty much went downhill from there. My technique was sloppy, defense shocking and footwork pretty much non existant, i mean i stood there and took 3 hard hooks to the head in a row! My coach told me afterwards i had a lot of bottle to carry on sparring against such experianced boxers (ones had 12 fights and the others a pro), but i really feel i let myself down, im normally a powerful puncher on the bags but it just didnt come off in sparring, any tips for next time?

Don't worry about it, the fact you're saying there will be a next time shows that it hasn't put you off. You will get better each time you spar, almost everyone gets a little bit roughed up the first few times. Only natural if you're sparring someone more experienced. And also some guys might be a little intimidated by your size and might try a little harder.
Just take things a little easier next time and work it up with each session.
Trrmo 09-10-2008, 04:29 PM Only way to get better, great wake -up call
Catmeat 09-10-2008, 04:44 PM And also, my nose hasnt stopped bleeding yet and i stopped training about 2 hours ago, is this something to worry about?
Paardekopski 09-10-2008, 05:26 PM your nosebleed should normally stop after a couple of minutes. Have you tried lying still with your nose up?
Funny thing is I never had nosebleeds, but I caught a hard straight on the nose last week, and it exploded blood from 2 nostrils. I looked like a freaking red dragon. I've had 3 sparringsessions since, and everytime I got a nosebleed, even after a light tap. It still feels sore, and I'm just hoping it'll return to normal.
But you probably should have it looked at if it keeps bleeding that long...
i remember the first time i sparred it was no fair!! i sparred with a teen ager that has been boxing 6 years and his record is 29-3 and i only been there for a month.
got my ass handed to me ahahahah.
but only advice i can give IMO is to time everything, counter, slip etc.
d_lyrik803 09-10-2008, 10:54 PM everybody has their bad days man. me for instance, i had my nose busted and was bleeding out both nostrils about 2 weeks ago. its happened before but the feeling every time it happens is still the same, disappointment settles in, but it makes you become resilient from it. basically learn from your mistakes and improve on those gaps in your game. and always remember, no matter how much skill the person in front of you has, whether its 2 years, or 3 months, both of you guys are going to get hit, you can't be 100% efficient all the time.
JayCoe 09-11-2008, 04:56 PM Sparring and bagwork are two different sports. What you can do on the bag means very little in the ring, I can throw 4 punches in a fraction of a second without gloves, with 14 oz. I can throw them in god knows what, a second? But ive yet to do that on a person. Bags are good for fitness, practicing the execution of the shot and building stamina, as for actual boxing it can't be done without a partner, in my opinion.
I'm lucky, i'm about 66kg so there's alot of people I can spar usually and if not, i'm ok to spar above my weight. The big guys must have it tough, I remember once this big guy never got to spar for months and months, he got in the ring when this guy from another country came over and was roughly his size and he just went to peices. It wasn't because he wasn't dedicated, it wasn't because he didn't do it right on the bag it was just pure and simple, he had no experience.
Don't worry about getting bust up in sparrin, it's happened to me, it's bound to have happend to everyone and if it hasn't yet either they haven't fought enough, or they're incredibly lucky or they aren't fighting people good enough. I like to do gentle sparring with someone much better than me, this way they don't smash me to the floor because it's enough to make you not want to get hit but not quite sparring, because they're better I can learn from them. When it comes to sparring, i'm more comfortable with people more my standard because there's no point getting smashed to peices, sparring is about learning not getting your own ass serve to you. So if somebody who is much better than you steps up to you and says "wanna spar?" and you're only saying yes because you don't want to look like a ***, you're a fool and a *** for not having the balls to say "i'm not as good as you yet".
Boxing is a hard sport, one of the hardest, just keep moving forward!

If someone is better than you and offers to spar I would say you should jump at the opportunity, unless the person is a complete a-hole they will probably cut you some slack. I have always said sparring with boxers better than you is the best way to learn.

truly spoken, you learn more from one loss than you do from a hundred wins against lesser oposition.
Catmeat 09-11-2008, 06:47 PM I think the guys i spar against feel they have to up the notch cos im so much bigger than them, but im still not comfortable with sparring as ive only done it around 2 times beforehand! The one thing im proud of myself for is the fact i didnt quit, and just kept going and still trying to land punches on him even though i was getting torn to pieces with blood everywhere, my coach commented on this saying i had bottle, only good thing about it really :/
Uchi Deshi 09-11-2008, 06:58 PM Good for you for getting in the ring and giving it a go! It's the only way you'll learn! Gotta take every opportunity you can get to practice! Unfortunately, getting hit is just part of the learning process. You showed that you were able to do the right thing just by sparrring!

That makes sense, you bigger guys get it hard because the smaller guys think they have an excuse to throw punches full strength. bigger guys also have alot more force behind punches so sparring can be a delicate affair knowing you can really hurt each other if tempo picks up.
