My nephew is 15. He's 6'4" and weighs 310 lbs and plays defensive line. (It's a small school so they move him around a lot)
He has trouble getting off from his 3 point stance. Any exercises or advice I could give him on how to speed it up? He;s getting hammered by smaller kids because of their speed.

One thing he has to do is stay low and try to be explosive in his lower body, especially legs. He's a really big kid for 15 so I could imagine he is still getting adjusted to his body. What kind of coaching does he get at the chool he's at?

He's got some great coaches but they really don't have time to do the one on one as much. They figure his size will take care of him but he either stands strait up or they get him about half way up and knock him of balance.

tell him to try a 4 point stance with both hands on the ground your able to explode better and get lower also tell him to jump them to when he see's them go low tell him to plant his cleets right in their back and it won't happen too much longer

another thing he may need to do some leg work with the weights maybe his legs aren't strong enough yet

Thats a big boy, the four point stance is easyer, my brother used it when he played, my brother is 14 years old, 6' 250lbs, we should make them fight.....

Heres a little tip: tell him to stop eating. Hes ****ing fat, tell him to try to get his weight down to like 250ish, i mean hes only 15 and thats fat. If he was fast id say then hes just a big strong kid. But if hes slow he needs to lose weight and stop eating Doritoes.Speed kills, not flab

you must have played for hitler then cause my coaches told me whatever stance i feel most comfortable in and most powerful to use it why would a coach not want you to improve

Well your coach was probaly a *****

When i played defense we had certain stances we had to take. Me being a defensive end i couldnt put my hand to the ground, i took a bent over runners stance almost. I guess to each coach his own, but if everyone on the D line is taking a different stance its looks kind of stupid, dont u think?

well no **** being a defensive end those are the stances you have to take or you'll never get to the qb but at nose tackle or defensive tackle its usaully better to use a 4 point stance it helps you explode with your legs better and you can drive through the guy instead of having to stunt or swim move also some times maybe the guy is just too fat to get in a 4 point so the coach makes him do a 3

I could sit down on my 350 pound ass and still pass block you little ****s.

we drilled our stances all the time.

Curly he needs to work on making his leges more explosive. i played at 350 pounds, but my legs were explosive. 350 pound guy running a 5.5 40 yard dash is not bad.

He is going to need to develop his legs with weight training and short sprints. He may have this problem until he gets older. But i think that many explosive short sprints will do him losts of good. He also need to get in his stance and hold it for 30-60 seconds - that is hard, but you work up to it.

He may not be an athlete. But he can at least work his ass off and make up for it.

No. Its not stupid.

It looks chaotic and un-controlabe. That is what a defence needs to look and act like. To shoehorn D players is to nuter them. As long as they know what they need to do in the given formation let them play.

Red I played 2 years at a Jr. College in Southern California in the Antelope Valley. California ranked team, as well as national ranked at one point - then we lost. i was one of the slower linemen at 5.5 - that is scary! one guy was a 4.8 40 and was over 300. no ****. He went to a big school. I didnt :( so i stoped playing.

I also benched 400 pounds, 265 millitary press blah whatever - i have no need to make bull****. It not like i can do most of that stuff now! lol

so belive me or not, i dont care.

They want my nephew in the 1000 lbs. club before he's a senior. One of his classes is weight lifting and he's taking track so I guess he's going in the right direction. He uses the four point when he shoots low but it doesn't take the other guys long to solve him. He's getting better in the three point now. Just needs practice and more and time to grow in to his body.

But as far as the coments made by Creed I cannot attest to the validity of them.
