View Full Version : Sparring Video
Darkstranger 09-07-2008, 05:03 PM Just thought I'd post a quick sparring video. I'm the one in red. Both me and my sparring partner have been training for about 12 months, but more seriously over last 6 months or so. Still raw and lots to learn, but loving every bit of it. One big think that's lacking for me is aggression, I really need to step it up!

TheBlackSwifty 09-07-2008, 05:36 PM Nice work! good jab try and turn the knuckles over a bit more. can see ya trying to practice your slipping and weaving but it is a bit off timed and you doing it when it isnt necessary. At times when you are covering up you are not looking at the opponent but looking at the ground or somewhere else and relying on your gloves to absorb the punches. careful because some hard looping punches or hooks can get in behind your guard and hammer you around the ear region. Also you leave your body open at times leaving an opportunity for your opponent to hit you with an uppercut or hook to the body.
keep it up man
dfwtx 09-07-2008, 06:26 PM Looking good with the jabs my advice is to just throw more combos when you're close like that and at 1:12 you threw then leaned in and looked down with your hands up, watch out for that. You have definitely made alot of progress since last time I saw a vid of yours and keep it up.
!! Shawn 09-08-2008, 03:07 AM You have a good start. I love the way you are slipping while you jab. That is the only way to do it.
You have significant room for improvement in power on your jab, but you have the potential to have a Larry Holmes like jab.
I would stick to a jab oriented fighting style for you, I think it will be very effective. You deliver it quick and telegraphed. The only combination you really need to know is JAB .... JAB JAB.... JAB JAB JAB
You need to focus a bit on tightening up your shell as you had your hands in poor position and he managed to punch through your guard on several occasions.
Over all, not bad at all.

I on the same boat with wha he said.... I'd just like to see you bounce a lil more... and for some reason that shell you go into bothers me.. couldn't tell ya why though.
Very nice though.. that jab looks like it hurts.
Barndog 09-08-2008, 11:40 AM You used your right hand only once in the first round. Mix it up D/S otherwise your opponents gonna start realising this and start punishing you hard. Although not being terribly telegraphed - ur opposite is gonna just wait for it, parry and jab, parry and hook. duck and right to the body etc. Try throwing the jab to the body, or starting with a right cross. Or even throw something after the jab!. Mix it up, keep your opponent guessing.

I disagree with you. From what I saw of him, he has the kind of jab that once fully developed will be nearly impossible to defend against, especially for guys at heavyweight.
d_lyrik803 09-08-2008, 02:52 PM pretty good, i saw you play a little too much with your lead hand when shuffling n got caught on that side because of it. the slipping is good and aside from playing with your lead hand, they're high enough to block some punches.
Luke.l.08 09-08-2008, 02:58 PM darkstranger what gym do you go to?
Darkstranger 09-08-2008, 05:00 PM Thanks for feedback guys, most appreciated!
Will take note of all that's said and try and get another video done soon. Still gun shy in the ring, hence the right hardly being used. My coach said I need to start believing in myself, but I still retreat into my turtle shell too much. Had a slight problem with that particular headguard and my vision so will have to stop using that one. Once again, cheers for the feedback!
Luke.I. I'm a member at Edmonton Eagles ABC which is up in North East London. I'm based in Tottenham so it's just a short walk for me to get there.

How can you disagree?! You can't spar or fight a round and only throw one type of punch. Look at the round again. Who can't defend against a jab, when you know that's the only shot coming.
Darkstranger even agreed with the point.
D/S you look strong though, and fitness is obviously no problem. Hopefully catch you on a show sometime? If i see ya, i'll come and say hello. You got no need to be gun shy, i'm sure you've taken some hits before - you ain't made of glass by no means!
hinduw 09-08-2008, 05:22 PM in your avator pic you dont look black. good vid btw
Griff 314 09-09-2008, 03:37 AM why cant i see the videos?.. where is it at.. i dont see any link
GreatestIam 09-09-2008, 04:44 AM Yo doog all ill say is the jabs defintely nice, you got long arms and thats a plus however i dont think you ever 1-2d the entire round, ill tell you something about the jab-straight combo, the jab steadys you and gets you closer the straight pulls you in, and the rest is instinct look for the left hook to the body1 and also work on pivoting about troubl he backed you against the ropes and you had no defense or stablizer to sustain yourself!
SonicFI 09-09-2008, 03:10 PM You're pretty good for 12months. Very good movement for someone your size imo. I fight 154lbs so i'm naturally in a faster division where we move alot but for a guy your size you def can move.
WHERE IN GODS NAME DID YOU BUY YOUR SHOES?! ive been looking for those since forever =(
Alexis Vastine 09-09-2008, 05:55 PM Your jab is slow and stiff, but mechanically sound. try getting some more snap, speed and accuracy into it. Lay off the fried chickens and go for a run mate. you're doing OK but need to step it up.

What if I replace the BBQ beans with coleslaw, will I still be able to have my bucket of 24 pieces? lol
Aiit, cheers for the advice bro, I'll be stepping up my running over the next few weeks leading up to the start of our season.

chilly9876 09-11-2008, 02:16 PM Good jab, but dont think we can see much more of what you've learnt as at the moment you're still worried about being hit. You seem very stiff and tense, also as soon as you were jabbing could tell by your body language that you were tensing up waiting worriedly to be hit. Also when your opponent was throwing you seemed to tense up and freeze, hence why his punches were getting through your guard so many times. When ur out of range (because u were more relaxed as he cant hit u) i could tell from your movement that you've learnt how to slip and move.
The thing that would improve you the most right now is sparring as much as possible. The more you spar the more you'll get used to being hit and the more relaxed you'll feel. Only once you're relaxed in the ring can you work on the combos, slipping, parrying and countering you've learnt in principle in training.
How often do you spar by the way?
Darkstranger 09-11-2008, 08:23 PM You hit the nail on the head bro!
I'm stilll trying to overcome the fear of getting hit, it's proper psychological block! It'so ironic too seeing as I'm the heaviest Super Heavy at the club.
Cheers for the advice bro, will get some more sparring in and hopefully get a video showing some improvements.
