88 winner Rashad Evans granted title shot with Forrest Griffin

With his stunning one-punch knockout victory over Chuck Liddell at this past Saturday's "UFC 88: Breakthrough" event, Rashad Evans has claimed top contender's status in the UFC and has been granted a title shot with current 205-pound champ Forrest Griffin.

UFC President Dana White confirmed in the post-event press conference that Evans will get the immediate title shot -- one that was all but promised to Liddell.

White wouldn't release a date for the upcoming championship tilt, but he made it very clear Evans had earned his shot.

UFC 88 draws 14,736 for $2.6 million gate

Saturday's UFC 88 event, which took place at Philips Arena in Atlanta, earned a $2.6 million gate according to UFC President Dana White.

White confirmed the numbers in a post-UFC 88 press conference.

The amount scored as the second-highest total in the nine-year history of the arena -- narrowly falling short of the amount earned by a 2006 Barbara Streisand concert. White was jovial about falling short of the record mark, stating that he "wants a rematch with Barbara."

Additionally, White said the official attendance for Saturday's pay-per-view event was 14,736. The near-capacity crowd was a positive sign for the organization, and White said the UFC would likely return to Atlanta in the future.

Fedor Emelianenko Free To Fight Randy Couture In The UFC

The long-awaited matchup between UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture and former PRIDE heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko has one less road block than originally believed.

M-1 Director of Operations Joost Raimond told USA Today on Thursday that Emelianenko’s current contracts with M-1 and Affliction wouldn’t prevent a potential bout against Randy Couture from taking place in the UFC.

The contracts that Fedor has at this point in time would allow for such a fight to take place, and specifically the Randy fight,” said Raimond, “so we’re free to make that happen if the opportunity presents itself.”

Though Raimond concluded by saying that the UFC isn’t “in the game plan” for the immediate future, Emelianenko’s contracts with other promotions, namely Affliction, were expected to be one of the biggest hurdles in signing a future fight between Emelianenko and Couture.

Evans v Griffin for the light-heavyweight title. That is depressing. The winner of Wanderlei v Rampage is the real champ in my eyes.

um....he was always free to fight in the UFC. It's just that the bald **** in charge doesn't like it that way.

How so? Griffin took care of Rampage.

Rampage was ahead on my card. IMO you gotta beat the champ to be the champ, and Forrest didn't beat Quinton Jackson.

He beat enough to take the UFC Belt though.

Not to the fans, he didn't.

Either way, there are people in front of Evans that deserve a title shot, fair and square.

Evans deserves a shot more than Rampage deserves a rematch at this point. Rashad is undefeated!, how many more ass whoopin does Rashad need to dish out for him to get some respect!?

The UFC has to start marketing and promoting this guy a lot better cause he ain't no joke!

Dana won't want Fedor coming over, taking his belt, and then fighting his next event in Affliction.......

More deserving than Wanderlei? Thiago? Machida? The reason Rashad isn't marketing well is because he has only a total of a few fight stoppages. Up until recently his fights have all gone to a decision.

The fight stoppers are the title holders.

Speak for yourself man. Forrest won that fight. It wasn't a wide decision but it was the right decision without a doubt. I had it like this:

Round 1 - Rampage (10-9)
Round 2 - Griffin (10-8)
Round 3 - Even (10-10)
Round 4 - Griffin (10-9)
Round 5 - Rampage (10-9)

48-47 Griffin.

As for Rashad's title shot. He's earned it. Dana had promised Chuck that shot if he had won so it's only fair to give Rashad the shot, and the fashion in which he finished Chuck off he is the more marketable fight for the fans. Plus it creates the possibility for a Chuck/Rua showdown, and with the return of Franklin to 205 we can get a Franklin/Machida rematch.

I agree and Rampage looked out of shape to me in the Griffin fight like he didn't take it seriously.

Fedor-Couture is the last fight the UFC wants. Fedor won't sign a multi-fight deal with the UFC and giving him a one-fight deal would be suicide, having one of their most well-known fighters thrashed (likely) and the belt taken by a man who then fights outside the organization.

I honestly don't think it will even matter. I know counting out Couture completely is stupid, but I can't see him making it through the heavyweight tournament.
