09/24/2003. Slovakian minnows Puchov caused a big surprise when they upset Barcelona to draw 1-1 with the Catalans.

Patrick Kluivert had put the visitors ahead, but Jambor levelled in the 90th minute to claim a memorable draw.

I blame this on Rijkard's team selection....I will watch the game later to better understand the draw....

My Barcelona would look like this:

GK - Rustu
DEF - Puyol, Cocu, Marquez, Bronckhorst
MID - Enrique, Ronaldinho, Gerard
FW - Quaresma, Kluivert, Overmars

They could have used him to control midfield...Barca had no Rhythm...Puyol and Giovanne didn't help Overmars and Quaresma on the flanks....they kept moving into the middle too much...they really lacked finesse...I hope they correct this by the weekend...

09/25/2003. It seems that Edgar Davids' move from Juventus to AS Roma is just months away now. The Giallorossi president Franco Sensi announced that the Dutchman will be joining next summer, but before singing the victory chant, Roma should beware. Real Madrid have the financial clout and player appeal in order to convince the former Milan man to join them, and not Roma, on a free transfer next summer. Following the departure of Claude Makelele, Davids is just the type of player who would be welcomed at the Bernabeu.

Raul doubtful for Valencia clash

www.soccernet.com
MADRID, Sept 25 (Reuters) - Real Madrid captain Raul is a serious doubt for his side's Liga visit to high-flying Valencia on Saturday because of a bruised hip.

The Spanish international sustained the injury in last week's 3-1 win over Malaga and club medical staff say that he faces a race against time if he is to appear in the game at Mestalla.

'If all goes well he should be able to undergo a fitness test on Friday,' said Doctor Juan Carlos Hernandez. 'But it is going to be a very close run thing because the bruising really needs two or three days to subside.'

Like fellow striker Ronaldo, Raul has scored three goals in four matches so far this season and his absence would be a major blow to the reigning champions.

The good news for Real, though, is that influential defender Ivan Helguera will be available for the Valencia match after making a successful comeback from a knee injury in Wednesday's Bernabeu Trophy match against River Plate.

Real and Valencia are level on points, just two behind leaders Deportivo Coruna, who are the only side in the league with a 100 percent record.

Spain handed Norway hurdle
Monday, 13 October 2003

Spain have been handed a tie against Norway in the UEFA EURO 2004™ play-offs after today's draw in Frankfurt.

Dutch test
The Spanish, who lost 1-0 to the Norwegians at UEFA EURO 2000™, will be confident of success in the two-legged tie next month but any of the ten sides involved will feel they can reach the finals in Portugal. Elsewhere, the Netherlands, runners-up in Group 3, were paired with Scotland.

First meeting
Latvia will take on Turkey, who finished third at the FIFA World Cup finals, in the first-ever meeting of the teams. Croatia will meet Balkans neighbours Slovenia while Russia will play Wales.

Johansson reaction
"I think there were some matches where both teams wanted to avoid each other," said UEFA President Lennart Johansson after the draw. "From what I could see they avoided the pairings that they were afraid of. I have to say that it was a fair decision not to seed the teams.

'See what happens'
"National-team football in Europe is of a very high standard, you cannot make a distinction between so-called small countries and big countries. In the small countries, their players are playing in the strongest leagues and in that sense it is almost impossible to predict the result of matches. I will not be the person predicting winners and losers - we will see what happens."

Whichever teams had been plucked out of the hat to play Portugal at the UEFA EURO 2004™ draw at the Pavilhão Atlântico in Lisbon, you can be sure they would have met with an almighty gasp.

Old foes
The fact the hosts drew neighbours Spain in what is already being billed as an Iberian classic, not only added an extra gallon of air to everyone's lungs in the arena, it also guaranteed that Group A will offer a real attacking flavour. Portugal and Spain are both regarded as strong contenders for the tournament and, with Russia and Greece joining Europe's sunshine states in the section, it promises to be a fascinating group

Crunch match
The hosts will face Spain in their final Group A match at Lisbon's José Alvalade stadium on 20 June and, given the quality of player at the disposal of Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari and his Spanish counterpart Iñaki Sáez, many expect this to be the deciding encounter.

Portuguese woe
Scolari, the man who led Brazil to FIFA World Cup glory in 2002, will probably be the more concerned of the coaches ahead of the fixture. The last time the countries met on Portuguese soil, Spain ran out 3-0 winners with Joseba Etxeberría scoring once and Diego Tristán twice. That friendly was held in Guimarães in September and both sides were virtually at full strength, although Portugal's platinum generation of stars including Cristiano Ronaldo were involved in Under-21 action so did not play.

Mental barrier
Scolari, who believes his players have a huge mental barrier to overcome, having had so few competitive games in the last two years, was anxious not to get over-excited about drawing the neighbours. "I have to treat Spain like the other teams," he said. "It is important we concentrate on Greece and Russia because we play them first."

Figo versus Raúl
Despite Scolari's muted response, the tie will certainly set pulses racing with both sides renowned for their swashbuckling style, flamboyant football and the extra incentive for Portugal captain Luís Figo of beating his Real Madrid CF team-mates Iker Casillas, Michael Salgado and Raúl González.

Spanish denied
The teams' last competitive encounter was a group match at the 1984 UEFA European Championship which finished 1-1. Both managers might be keen to note that on that occasion both sides qualified from the group stage, with Portugal losing to eventual winners France in the last four and Spain falling in a memorable final.

Greek challenge
Spain coach Sáez might be more concerned about Group A rivals Greece, who play Portugal in the tournament's opening game in Porto on 12 June. The Greeks, who qualified automatically ahead of Spain thanks largely to a 1-0 win over Sáez's men in Zaragoza in June, are a tough team to beat and the strong work ethic instilled by German coach Otto Rehhagel will give Spain and Portugal - who drew 1-1 with them in a recent friendly - plenty to ponder.

Russian roulette
Greece's final group match pits them against Russia, who squeezed past Wales in the play-offs. Coach Georgi Yartsev will look to holding midfield player Aleksei Smertin and target man Dmitri Bulykin to have the same impact they had in a 4-1 Moscow thrashing of fellow Group 10 qualifiers Switzerland in September.

Iberian favourites
But few would bet against Portugal and Spain following in the footsteps of their famous sides of the 1980s by advancing to the last eight.

Final hurdle for Figo
Friday, 05 December 2003

"We reached the quarter-finals at EURO 96™, the semi-finals at EURO 2000™ and who knows, a place in the final maybe next year"
Luís Figo

By Julia Court

The finals of UEFA EURO 2004™ will be the final major act of a number of fine players' careers, with many senior professionals choosing to retire from international football at the top. Perhaps none would be missed as much as Luís Figo, who may pull on a Portugal shirt for the last time next summer.

Home comforts
Should he choose to quit, the outrageously gifted Real Madrid CF midfield player will have timed his decision well. EURO 2004™ will be the first major international footballing event to be held in Portugal since the 1991 FIFA World Youth Championship, and Figo could not deny that playing in front of home crowds next summer could give his international swansong an extra twist.

Title hopes
"Playing in front of Portugal fans in my home country is the best way to end my international career but a major trophy would be even better," he told uefa.com. "We reached the quarter-finals at EURO 96™, the semi-finals at EURO 2000™ and who knows, a place in the final maybe next year. That would be fantastic."

International longing
Major trophies at international level are the only gap in Figo's awesome collection of honours. One of the golden generation of Portuguese players who won the World Youth Championship on home territory, he and his team-mates have never quite brought the glory that they were expected to do at senior level.

Higher stakes
However, just raising the stakes for Portuguese teams was an achievement in itself for Figo. "We would love to win a trophy but for a country like Portugal just to have been at the big events in football is a great achievement," he said. "I hope that with the new players we have we can continue this."

Young bucks
Certainly, the Portugal side that takes the field at EURO 2004™ will be younger than usual, with many old stagers such as defender Jorge Costa bowing out after Portugal were humbled by hosts the Korean Republic in the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

Tough draw
The draw for the UEFA European Championship has pitted Luiz Felipe Scolari's side with neighbours Spain, Greece and Russia. Against such powerful opponents, Figo fears that home advantage may count for little, saying: "To play at home is always an advantage and the momentum of the crowd and the atmosphere can really help a team, but you must remember there are some very good teams at this tournament and for Portugal to play sides like France, Italy, Spain or Holland under any circumstances will be difficult."

Big-match temperament
Of course, when it comes to big matches against powerful teams, Figo himself will have little to worry about. The 31-year-old has learned all about pressure, winning UEFA European Cup Winners' Cup, European Champion Clubs' Cup and Spanish league titles with FC Barcelona and Madrid.

Difficult situation
And he will need all of that experience this weekend as his former and current employers face each other in the Primera División. Having joined Madrid for €65m from Barça in 2000, Figo went from hero to hate figure at the Camp Nou. "For myself and Ronaldo, who are former Barça players, there is always a lot of focus in the press before the game but we try not to take much notice," he said. "We will approach this match like any other game."

Cool approach
If he can maintain that same approach as Portugal take to the pitch for next summer's finals, his swansong could yet turn out to be Figo's finest hour.

Rivaldo signs for Cruzeiro

RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan 5 (Reuters) - World Cup winner Rivaldo has ended speculation about his future by joining Brazilian champions Cruzeiro.

Cruzeiro said on their official website on Monday that the former Deportivo Coruna, Barcelona and AC Milan striker had signed a one-year contract which brings him home after seven years in European club football.

The Foxes, who are based in Brazil's third-largest city of Belo Horizonte, said a local pharmaceutical company was helping to sponsor the signing of the 31-tyear-old who spent most of the last 18 months warming the substitutes' bench at AC Milan.

Rivaldo's signing is a tremendous boost for Brazilian domestic football which has become used to seeing nearly all of its top players depart for wealthier European clubs.

Brazilian media said the deal was settled at a meeting on Sunday involving Cruzeiro coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo, president Alvimar Perrela and Rivaldo's agent Carlos Arini.

The former world player of the year, who at the weekend was linked with a move to Saudi Arabian club Al Ittihad, had been a free agent since being released by AC Milan last month.

He joined the Italian Serie A club after helping Brazil to win their fifth World Cup title in Japan and South Korea in 2002 but was relegated to the reserves by coach Carlo Ancelotti and sat out last year's Champions League final win over Juventus.

Despite this, Rivaldo kept his place in the Brazil team and scored in the 1-1 draw away to Peru in November's World Cup qualifier.

Rivaldo has played in Europe since 1996 when he joined Spain's Deportivo Coruna. He then spent five seasons with Barcelona before trying his luck in Italy.

Monday's move will reunite Rivaldo with Luxemburgo, his mentor earlier in his career.

Rivaldo played under Luxemburgo at Palmeiras in the mid-1990s and again in the Brazil team which won the Copa America in 1999.

He will now spearhead Cruzeiro's attempt to win the Libertadores Cup, South America's equivalent of the European Champions League, for a third time.

During the last month, Rivaldo had been linked with a number of clubs including Portugal's Porto, Spanish strugglers Espanyol, Russia's Spartak Moscow and Mexico's America.

In the event, Cruzeiro's strongest challengers were newly-promoted Brazilian club Botafogo, who were offered financial help from the Rio de Janeiro city government in their attempt to sign him.

Cesar Maia, the mayor of Rio, said he had offered to dig into public funds to help bring Rivaldo to the 'Marvellous City' for the first time.

Real Madrid have the financial clout and player appeal in order to convince the former Milan man to join them, and not Roma, on a free transfer next summer. Following the departure of Claude Makelele, Davids is just the type of player who would be welcomed at the Bernabeu.

Update on Davids situation. Barca may be in luck....

01/09/2004. Barcelona have reached an agreement with Juventus for the loan of Edgar Davids until June.

The Catalans' president Joan Laporta did the deal in Italy this afternoon, and must now agree terms with the player.

Davids is currently in Surinam, the country of his origin, where he is attending the burial of an aunt.

Team of 2003 announced
Monday, 12 January 2004

French duo Thierry Henry and Zinedine Zidane have made it a glorious treble as they take their places in uefa.com users' Team of 2003.

European Footballer of the Year Pavel Nedved

Familiar faces
With almost 1.5 million votes cast, the Arsenal FC striker and the Real Madrid CF midfield player have been voted into uefa.com users' Team of the Year for the third time in succession, and have now appeared in every one of our élite teams since the first poll in 2001.

Madrid quartet
Zidane was joined in the dream team by three other Madrid players. Roberto Carlos was voted the left-back of the year for the second season running, Luís Figo earned his first appearance and David Beckham - who was named in the Team of 2001 while at Manchester United FC - also made a welcome return to the XI.

Porto coach José Mourinho

Ruud awakening
Beckham's former United team-mate Ruud van Nistelrooij has made the team for the first time after being overlooked in the 2001 and 2002 polls. He links up in attack with Henry, his adversary from the Premiership.

Nedved honoured
The European Footballer of the Year, Pavel Nedved, makes it into the Team of the Year for the first time in emphatic style. The Juventus FC playmaker won a massive 65 per cent of the vote for his position to confirm that he was - for the ordinary fans as well as the experts - one of the greats of 2003.

Milan partners
Back in defence, AC Milan profited from their 2002/03 UEFA Champions League triumph with Alessandro Nesta and Paolo Maldini being named as Europe's central defensive partnership of choice, with Juve's Gianluigi Buffon taking the goalkeeper's gloves behind them.

Porto prestige
However, the man named as Europe's favourite right-back is more of a surprise. With FC Porto succeeding in magnificent style with a league, Portuguese Cup and UEFA Cup treble in 2003, both right-back Paulo Ferreira and coach José Mourinho have made their way into the Team of 2003. Mourinho polled 60 per cent of the coaching vote to leave no doubt that uefa.com users' had shared in Porto's joy over the course of last year.

uefa.com users' Team of 2003:
Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus FC), Paulo Ferreira (FC Porto) Alessandro Nesta (AC Milan), Paolo Maldini (AC Milan), Roberto Carlos (Real Madrid CF), Luís Figo (Real Madrid CF), David Beckham (Real Madrid CF), Zinedine Zidane (Real Madrid CF), Pavel Nedved (Juventus FC), Thierry Henry (Arsenal FC), Ruud van Nistelrooij (Manchester United FC).
Coach: José Mourinho (FC Porto).

uefa.com users' Team of 2002:

Coach: Senol Günes (Turkey).

uefa.com users' Team of 2001:

Puyol has fractured his left cheekbone and will miss the next 4 to 6 weeks. Iniesta and Reiziger also join Barca's growing injury list.

Puyol has the most serious injury. A scan carried out in the early hours of the morning was followed by an examination by a specialist. Initial conclusions are that the player will not have to undergo surgery and will have treatment for the next 4 to 6 weeks. Further test will be carried out.

This is the second time Puyol has suffered an injury of this type, though this time the damage is to his left cheek. The injury is similar to the one Puyol suffered last season and which forced him to miss five games and to wear a protective facemask. Puyol received the blow in a clash of heads with Levante striker Congo in the 81st minute. He was replaced by young defender Ramón Ros.

Madrid should have won this game IMO...

1-1 One point each, fair result...

One half of the game plus one point for each side on the field. The first half was in Betis' hands, whereas Madrid took control of the second one. But this does not seem enough for the Whites after having shown such an authority and strength in the late stretch of the game. They almost grasped the win and, as a result, the top position of the table. Ronaldo made a repeat of what he did in Pamplona, which was to score the drawing goal. The rival displayed its best skills so far this season. Helguera could have hit the win in the 87th minute, but Varela was there to save. Madrid has left an impression different to the last time it visited Seville.
The best thing we can say about Real's performance up to the first goal is that they had defended very well. One must admit that Betis had been in control of the game since the kickoff, though it never really got to put Casillas' goal in danger. Denilson's shot was the only one that actually gave the white keeper some trouble. Alfonso was showing a great drive in his charges, but the white defence also did a good job to hold him back. The local crowd protested the two collapses of Joaquín inside the area. This very player was the best men of his side as he led it in its urge and courage, though without much accuracy.

From that moment the game became somehow predictable, as Madrid was more aggressive facing a local team that only wanted to secure its advantage. Betis only limited its attacking play to counterattacks through any gap the white defence might leave. Then Casillas had some more trouble, just as many as Contreras did, considering that the latter's appearance at today's game was only certain at the last minute due to some physical upset of the local keeper. Madrid only gave him some trouble in the late minutes, when Ronaldo came up with two dangerous actions, which does not seem much of an offensive drive for a team like Madrid. The Whites had to change their attitude in the second half if they wanted to change the course of the game.

A different Madrid
And they did change, a great deal. They were looking so different that in the first minute they created more danger than in the whole first half. It was a very precise centre shot by Figo. The local keeper cleared it away to the corner. The kick was taken and Zidane controlled it to send it into the post, one inch wide. It was a different side; it showed all the powerful authority they could in the midfield. But it proved hard for them to get through the increasingly crowded defence of the local side. It was one chance after another, but more and more spaced out as the game went on. Helguera came up with a close header. Zidane fired a soft shot, following one perfect reception in the area. Betis was also close on several occasions (Ito and Benjamín), though its clearest objective was to defend its advantage, which was worth a lot for the home side.

But then the white goal came out of Ronaldo's prodigious feet. He took away the breath of the local audience, which until then had been very boisterous about their team's performance (very similarly to Pamplona's audience recently). The game was now in the visitors' hands. Beckham did not show any sign of weakness from this long time off the fields; on the contrary, he did show all his usual physical strength. The English got a very good support from Helguera and Solari, the latter replaced Pavón. Betis stepped up only in the late minutes of play to make a last attempt. They failed to change the scoreboard though. Valera cleared a header from Helguera right below the woodwork in the 42nd minute. Solari came up with a precise volley wich just went few inches wide. The final result means one point for each side, which, even though does not help Madrid to get to the top position, it does help Madrid to forget the 4-1 defeat on its last visit to Seville.

THE MATCH:
1 - BETIS: Contreras; Mingo, Juanito, Lembo, Varela; Ito, Benjamín; Fernando (Capi), Joaquín, Denilson (Tote); Alfonso (Ismael).
1 - REAL MADRID: Casillas; Salgado, Pavón (Solari), Raúl Bravo, Roberto Carlos; Beckham, Helguera, Figo, Zidane; Raúl and Ronaldo.
REFEREE: Losantos Omar, Basque Referees Association. Yellow cards to Helguera, Figo, Lembo, Varela, Pavón and Solari.
GOLES:
1-0: Min. 33: Joaquín makes the most of a save by Casillas, scores from an assist by Fernando.
1-1: Min. 63: Ronaldo, from an awkward angle, scores after dribbling past the keeper.

Bitter Sweet Debuts

A solid 2nd half performance against Bilbao tonight nearly brought Barca the 3 points on debut day for Jorquera, Davids and Oleguer, but an 85th minute equaliser.

Rijkaard's decision to play Jorquera for the flu stricken Valdes instead of Rustu, paid big dividends early on, when the Barca B keeper made a series of excellent stops. Davids also looked good on his debut, lasting the pace for the full 90 minutes, and Oleguer slotted in well at the back as cover for the injured Puyol.

Visitors dominate early on

Bilbao came out of the blocks the sharper and but for the providential Jonquera could easily have gone ahead in the first 10 minutes as they caught Barca on the counter. Reiziger, who pressed forward dangerously all night, had Barca's first real chance with a long range effort on 11 minutes and another foray down the right saw him create another chance on 22 minutes, which Ronaldinho failed to put away with the Bilbao keeper stranded in no mans land. In between times, Eszquerro brought out another excellent stop from Jorquera, who showed no sign of nerves on his league debut.

On 37minutes, referee Esquinas Torres ignored clear claims for a Barca penalty as Tiko bundled Ronaldinho off the ball as the Brazilian homed in on goal.

Half time changes

Gerard López and Patrick Kluivert came on for Xavi and Luis García, who'd missed a great chance to score in the first half after a brilliant cross field ball from Ronaldinho. The changes gave the team a lot more pace and right from the start Ronaldinho broke down the left before turning the ball back for Davids, whose shot unfortunately went high. With Saviola and Kluivert working hard up front, Rijkaard made his attacking intentions clear for the second half.

Livelier

Gerard began to impose himself in midfield and win the loose balls and the team looked a lot livelier with Gerard himself going close with a diving header as did Cocu with a rasping shot from the edge of the box. It was a Dutch trio who laid on the goal on 62 minutes when Davids released Van Bronckhurst down the left, the fullback exchanged passes with Kluivert before floating in a perfect cross which the striker then headed firmly past the keeper from the penalty spot.

Two minutes later Ezquerro gave warning that Bilbao wouldn't lie down and take defeat easily and only another excellent tip over the bar from Jorquera kept the Basque striker's shot from going in. Cocu drove Barca on to get the killer second and he was unlucky to see his blistering shot go just wide. Finally though, Bilbao, with veteran Urziaz on to give them that extra punch, got the equaliser, when Gurpegi headed past Jorquera from a cross from the left. Barca frantically fought for a second and Gerard was desperately unlucky when Aranzubía pulled off a great save to keep him out in the dying seconds.

These two don't like each other very much. It is always a fearsome contest when they come up against each other, and this clash at the Bernebeu is likely to be no exception.

Valencia, along with Deportivo, have changed the Real Madrid-Barcelona balance of power in La Liga, perhaps unalterably.

Now when Real visit the Mestella they are greeted with boos, whistles and jeers. For the Ches faithful, it is they who stand between their side and a second Liga title in three seasons.

Earlier in the campaign, Real were well and truly outclassed at the Mestella. 2-0 was the score, but in all honesty it could have been more.

Carlos Queiroz is a man with problems. The team is not functioning at anywhere near the level it was a month or so ago, and the players themselves know things aren't right.

Centre-back Francisco Pavon appears to be declining as a player, and now looks a real liability. Raul Bravo –who is actually a right-back- has performed with so much more assurance this season than his partner who lacks pace, challenges for balls he has no chance of winning, and generally looks ill at ease when put under pressure.

This promises to be a fascinating tussle between La Liga's top two.

LATEST TEAM NEWS

Real Madrid: Ivan Helguera replaces Pavon in the centre of defence. Guti will partner David Beckham in the centre of midfield, while Santi Solari steps in for the injured Zinedine Zidane. Cesar is set to start in goal.

Valencia: Pablo Aimar returns to the team after missing the 0-0 bore draw with Valladolid through suspension. Andrés Palop will play in goal. Coach Rafa Benitez has his best possible 11 available for this clash.

PROBABLE LINE-UPS

Real Madrid: César; Salgado, Roberto Carlos, Helguera, Raúl Bravo; Beckham, Guti; Solari, Raúl, Figo; Ronaldo.

Valencia: Palop; Curro Torres, Ayala, Marchena, Carboni; Rufete, Albelda, Baraja, Vicente; Aimar, Mista.

Raúl, Ronaldo and Figo's goal, the latter from penalty, have paved Madrid's way to semifinals. Real Madrid displayed its best football at the game that required it the most. Guti and Solari performed at an excellent level and Zidane's absence ceased to be a cause of concern from the very first minute of play. Raúl did an outstanding job just as Ronaldo did with the fantastic second target of the game. Beckham and Albelda were sent off in the late bit of the match, both on a second caution. Next week, Valencia will have to score four goals at home in order to pass into the semifinals.
http://www.realmadrid.com/web_realmadrid/mmedia/000/000/038/106.jpg
This was undoubtedly the star game in quarterfinals. First-choice keepers on each side Casillas and Cañizares had to stay at the bench. Zidane also watched the game from that spot. This encounter was to make clear which was Spain's best football team. The only innovation in the visiting lineup was Garrido's appearance on the right back position.

Valencia took the reins of the game once both sides got into it. Rufete and Mista enjoyed two clear chances to score in the five first minutes of play. These two scares made the local crowd suffer for the visitors' superiority over the home squad. Madrid took a while to come to grips with the encounter. When Guti finally warmed up, the ball started to move faster at the white feet. Raúl was always there to receive the pass and Solari made good connections to Roberto Carlos, but still, Valencia's approaches to the goal were pretty dangerous, though without much luck. Aimar was doing a lot of harm moving from line to line, but the good local defence was able to undermine the visiting forward's shooting.

Usual drive
An amazing drive is one of the aspects that Madrid's rival coaches usually highlight about its play. And this did not change tonight against Valencia. Its charges on the goal had been very scarce and mostly a way off-target. But then, Raúl's hit finally came up in the 32th minute. The captain received a wonderful centre header from Solari. The 1-0 score left the rival a bit knocked out. Valencia's play got duller, and yet Mista had another great chance. Helguera got in his way and avoided the tie. In the first half both teams looked as if they had signed a non-aggression agreement.
http://www.realmadrid.com/web_realmadrid/mmedia/000/000/038/110.jpg
There still were 135 minutes left to play in this round, but Madrid was in the lead. Valencia was aware of that, so it changed its tactics. The visiting coach made the changes after Ronaldo was close to hit the second. His team got sharper when Angulo came on for Rufete. But the Whites, cheered up by their supporters, were very keen to do Valencia more harm.

Both sides were running out of strength, but just at this point was when The Phenomenon came up to hit the goal he had been assaulting on several occasions all through the game, without much luck until there were 10 minutes left. It all began with an interplay with Figo, who passed the ball to the Brazilian striker. The climax was still to come though. Marchena knocked Raúl over inside the area. Figo took the penalty kick and made it 3-0. This result paves Madrid's way to semifinals. Valencia will have to score four goals next week on its ground if it wants to eliminate the Liga Champion from the Spanish Cup. Albelda and Beckham will not be on the court because they both were sent off in the late bit of the game.

THE MATCH:
3 – REAL MADRID: César; Míchel Salgado, Roberto Carlos, Helguera, Raúl Bravo; Beckham, Guti, Figo, Solari; Raúl and Ronaldo (Cambiasso 90´).
0 – VALENCIA: Palop; Garrido, Ayala, Marchena, Carboni; Albelda, Baraja, Vicente, Rufete (Angulo 61´); Aimar and Mista (Xisco 73´).

2-1: Two Missles sink yellow submarine

http://www1.realmadrid.com/web_realmadrid/mmedia/000/000/038/172.jpg
It was a very elaborate win with a great deal of hard work from start to end. Solari and Ronaldo were the strikers that give their team the deserved win against Villarreal (2-0). Tonight's result allows Madrid to go to bed as top team until Valencia plays its game tomorrow. The target hit by the Brazilian forward will be remembered as one of his outstanding goals. But there was one more powerful missile past Villarreal's goal. Queiroz' boys displayed a very organised defensive work as well as the necessary patience to break through the opposing back line. The visitors only got some minutes of good play when Madrid began to take it more easily in the last ten minutes of play. Bernabéu remains an unbeatable fort for the visiting squads (ten home games, ten wins). Next challenge for Madrid is to finish off the Spanish Cup round in Valencia. This will happen on Wednesday.
http://www.realmadrid.com/web_realmadrid/mmedia/000/000/038/162.jpg
Open game
Madrid seemed to stick to the good impression they had caused recently in the Spanish Cup tournament. Down to work from the very first minute, they did not wait and see how the play was going to unfold. On the other hand, Villarreal displayed a pretty interesting approach for the Whites' interest, as it never withdrew to its ground. The game was very lively. Riquelme was the main danger from the visiting side. He was positioned in-between two pivots and the white defence, so there was no way that one single Madrid player could take care of his marking. He managed to play in-between lines very nice and easy. Guayre was the forward's best assistant. The latter even had his own chance to score in the 18th minute, but Casillas got in his way to clear.

Powerful charges on the left flank
However, Queiroz' men were very good at withdrawing. Besides, the charges on the left flank were giving the visiting keeper a lot of hassle every time Solari and Roberto Carlos managed to dribble Belletti. Most of the white dangerous actions were created on the left flank, as well as the first goal. Tonight Solari got his deserved reward for all the work he has been doing for the team's benefit. The move that led to this goal began at Figo's boots, which are also doing Madrid a lot of good. The other way to approach to the opposing goal had its origin in Guti, who kept passing low shots forwards to Raúl and Ronaldo. Reina had to save after one of these moves that number '7' tried to convert (21'). A few minutes later, the local keeper had to step in again to clear two shots by the English midfielder (22' and 40'). Real Madrid was clearly in command of the game by that time. Its work was very hard and deserved a triumph.
http://www.realmadrid.com/web_realmadrid/mmedia/000/000/038/164.jpg
Gunman Ronaldo
The plotline to the game did not change much after the break. The Whites' authority got more and more obvious. Queiroz' squad was like a boxer hitting his rival very hard: a powerful left-footed shot by Raúl (46'), then another one by Roberto Carlos (48') (both ended up in Reina's hands), and Ronaldo also had his share (53'). The Brazilian, as usual, gave the rivals a very hard time. Guti kept firing his low shots, as he usually likes to shoot. Number '9' fired another missile from the edge of the area. The crowd almost hit the roof at this action. Is anybody still worried about Ronaldo's lack of pressure on the rival area? or his lack of defensive work except in the counterattacks? Let him be happy with his free spirit. Fans will be grateful for it.

Rotations
Villarreal began to use all its weapons in a desperate attempt to save the game, but once again Casillas proved very accurate in saving Belletti's well-aimed shot. Queiroz' made all the necessary changes. Juanfran made his debut in a Liga game and Portillo and Cambiaso also got their minutes on the field. Roberto Carlos, Raúl and Figo left for the locker toom. Solari moved further back and Juanfran had to move to the right. Cuchu was positioned to the left. Portillo kept Ronie company in the front line. The three points were secured, although a header by Ballesteros (86') cut down Madrid's advantage. There was no time for suprises because Víctor's shot went too high (88'). The Whites are firm in their Liga pursuit, though they finally suffered in a very absurd way.

THE MATCH:
2 - REAL MADRID: Casillas; Salgado, Mejía, Raúl Bravo, Roberto Carlos (Juanfran, 76’); Beckham, Guti; Figo (Cambiasso, 85’), Raúl (Portillo, 78’), Solari; and Ronaldo.
1 - VILLARREAL: Reina; Belletti, Pedro Martí, Ballesteros, Quique Álvarez, Arruabarrena; Battaglia (Javi Venta, 58’); José Marí, Riquelme (Josico, 58’), Guayre (Víctor, 58’); and Anderson.
GOALS:
1-0 (14’): Interplay between Figo and Solari , who takes Reina by surprise.
2-0(53’): Ronaldo, powerful left-footed shot, from outside the area.
2-1[ (86’): Ballesteros, header, after a corner kick.
REFEREE: Daudén Ibáñez (Aragon Referees Association). Roberto Carlos, Battaglia, Pedro Martí, Arruabarrena, Raúl Bravo, José Mari and Ballesteros were cautioned.

Three golden points (0-1)

THE GOALS

0-1, Kluivert (30')

http://www.fcbarcelona.com/imagenes/jugadores/futbol/kluivert/250104_Kluivert_gran.jpg

Barca came out on top in a tense game tonight in Seville which puts them just four points off the all important Champions League places in the table and sets them up nicely for the Cup second leg.

Three points worth their weight in gold and all the more satisfying when you consider that both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have conceded four goals in their visits to the Sánchez Pizjuán this season. The game had everything, with a great goal from Kluivert in the thirtieth minute and intense pressure from the home team that almost gave them the equalizer.

http://www.fcbarcelona.com/imagenes/jugadores/futbol/Partidos/Liga-2003-04/Sevilla-FCB/250104_CronicaXavi.jpg

Alternating pressure

Frank Rijkaard made a number of changes in the starting line-up, bringing in Xavi and Luis García and leaving Saviola on the bench. Sevilla had the edge in the opening quarter of an hour but without creating any clear-cut chances.

Reiziger picked up a yellow card and will be suspended for the next match against Albacete. Moments later, Luis García had the best chance of the game so far after a fine pass from Xavi. He beat Esteban in the Sevilla goal but his effort went just wide.

Xavi celebrated his 24th birthday with one of his trademark performances in midfield, permitting Barca to gradually take control of the game. In the 26th, a good ball from Kluivert for Ronaldinho was wasted by the Brazilian. Sevilla struck back and only a providential intervention from Oleguer stopped Darío Silva's headed effort.

Kluivert enters the record books

In the 30th minute, Luis García took advantage of the space down the wings obligingly provided by the home team to centre for Kluivert to score his 122nd Barca goal. The Dutch striker is now the fourth highest scorer in the history of the Club along with Carles Rexach.

Another yellow

The second half started badly for Barca with yet another yellow card for Ronaldinho in the 54th minute. Together with Reiziger he will also miss the next league game against Albacete. The home team continued to have the best of possession but failed to trouble Valdés in the Barca goal.

In the 64th minute, Frank Rijkaard brought on Marc Overmars in place of Ronaldinho in a move designed to open up the field with Luis García on the right and Overmars on the left. Darío Silva had two good chances minutes later, the first from a free kick and the second with his head.

Pressure from Sevilla

Xavi Hernández almost hit Barca's second in the 71st minutes after a fantastic through ball into the area from Luis Garcia. With 15 minutes to go, the game was balanced on a knife-edge with both the equalizer or Barca's second looking possible. Barca had a number of half chances while Sevilla failed to translate possession into real goal efforts. Only Darío Silva tried to surprise Valdés with a couple of long-range shots.

The closing minutes were all Sevilla's. Martí was sent off for a second yellow much to the disgust of the home crowd who were desperate for the equalizer. With three minutes left to go, Ricardo Quaresma came on for Luis García.

Darío Silva hit the post in the 89th after a great save from Valdés. Barca, though, managed to hang on thanks to some excellent work in defence by Davids and Oleguer and a goal line clearance by Xavi in time added on.

Fehér death stuns football

SL Benfica and Hungary striker Miklós Fehér died in the early hours of this morning after collapsing on the pitch during his side's Portuguese SuperLiga game against Vitória SC in Guimarães last night.

Cardiac arrest
The 24-year-old centre-forward had come on as a 59th-minute substitute but half an hour later suffered a cardiac arrest from which he failed to recover. Fehér was carried from the pitch by his team-mates and both clubs' medical staff tried in vain to resuscitate him before an ambulance arrived and the player was taken to Guimarães Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 00.10CET.

'Deeply shocked'
Benfica's head of communications, António Cunha Vaz, said: "Nobody would like to deliver this news. We are all deeply shocked and would first like to send our condolences to his family. All the Benfica board and supporters are mourning our player, Miklós Fehér."

'Thoughts with family'
Dr Gilberto Madaíl, the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, added: "On behalf of the Portuguese Federation I would like to express my deep regret at this situation. Life has unfair situations and all we can say is that our thoughts are with the family and friends of the player."

'Very wrong'
Benfica's Fernando Aguiar scored the game's only goal a minute before Fehér was shown the yellow card for wasting time. Then he collapsed. "It's incredible that something like this happens," said match referee Olegário Benquerença. "I immediately knew something was very wrong when he fell on the pitch and all I could do was call the medical crews of both teams."

International talent
Born in Hungary on 20 July 1979, Fehér started his career at Györi ETO FC and went on to represent FC Porto, SC Salgueiros and SC Braga before moving to Benfica. He made his first international appearance in October 1998 against Azerbaijan and went on to score seven goals in 25 international matches. There will be an autopsy to determine the circumstances of his death today.

Another account of this tragic situation....

He was 24-years-old.

Feher collapsed on the pitch during Sunday's match between Vitoria Guimaraes and Benfica where he lay motionless for several minutes.

He was revived on the pitch but continued to fall in and out of consciousness at the hospital in Guimaraes.

Feher is said to have suffered a heart attack.

He collapsed in the 90th minute of the match.

He received a yellow card, laughed it off, and then fell to ground on his back just seconds later.

Team doctors from both clubs attempted to revive him until the medics arrived shortly after.

The Hungarian striker played in Portugal for the majority of his career after joining FC Porto in 1998.

He spent 3 seasons with Porto and also had loan spells at Salgueiros and Braga before joining Benfica in 2002/2003.

He made 70 appearences in Portugal top flight where he scored 27 goals.

This season he scored 3 goals despite being used mainly as a substitute.

He had been capped 22 for Hungary, scoring 6 times.

Feher dies after on-field collapse
LISBON, Jan 26 (Reuters) - Portugal's soccer chief declared Monday a day of mourning after the on-field death of Benfica's Hungarian international Miklos Feher, the victim of an apparent heart attack.

Miklos Feher: Suffered heart attack (Empics)
The 24-year-old striker collapsed on Sunday during a league game, the second international to die on the field of play in seven months after a heart condition killed Cameroon's Marc Vivien Foe at the Confederations Cup in France last June.

'This is a bad day for us,' Gilberto Madail, chairman of the Portuguese Soccer Federation, told TSF radio. 'Last night was a truly black night.'

The opening page of Benfica's official website was in black on Monday with the words 'Goodbye Feher' in white.

Feher collapsed on the rain-sodden pitch in injury time of the televised match against Vitoria Guimaraes with Benfica leading 1-0. Benfica had taken the lead in injury time through Fernando Aguiar.

Referee Olegario Benquerenca blew the final whistle after consulting both captains as there was still a minute or so of injury time to be played. The result is expected to stand.

'Death live,' read the front-page headline in Monday's edition of Diario de Noticias newspaper, while Publico newspaper splashed, 'Death in Guimaraes'.

IN MOURNING

Television showed repeated footage of Feher smiling at the referee after receiving a yellow card. He leaned over with his hands on his thighs, then slumped backwards onto the pitch.

Sports newspaper A Bola carried a front page in mourning black with a picture of Feher smiling.

'The last smile of Miklos Feher - 1979-2004,' read the headline.

After his collapse Feher was taken by ambulance to the Lady of the Olive Tree Hospital where medical personnel gave up efforts to revive him about one hour and 40 minutes after his collapse.

A hospital spokesman said Feher had died of cardio-respiratory arrest. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday morning.

Following the autopsy, Feher's coffin will be transported to Benfica's Stadium of Light for mourners to pay their last respects, Benfica spokesman Antonio Cunha Vaz said.

Benfica's team and executives will accompany the body back to Hungary for the funeral, he said. Feher's parents also have arrived in Portugal.

Benfica and Guimaraes said in a joint statement that Feher had received appropriate medical treatment when he collapsed.

World soccer's governing body FIFA has drafted letters of condolences to Benfica and the Hungarian Football Association and spokesman Andreas Herren said: 'We are deeply saddened by this new tragedy that has struck the game.

'We are obviously as keen as everybody else is to learn the medical causes.'

NOTHING UNUSUAL

Hungary FA officials, including national coach Lothar Matthaeus, were on a flight to Malta to discuss dates for World Cup qualifiers and unreachable for immediate comment.

But Dezso Lejko, the Hungary team doctor, said he had never found anything unusual in Feher's health.

'I knew him for four years, since he arrived in the Under-21 team,' he told local radio. 'I never found anything wrong with his physical state, he had no heart problems at all.'

Feher came to Portugal to play for Porto in the 1998/99 season from Hungary's Gyor Eto. He moved to Benfica in the 2002/03 season after loan spells at Salgueiros and Braga.

The last top Portuguese player to die during a match was Fernando Pascoal das Neves of Porto in December 1973. He collapsed in the 13th minute of the 13th game of the season.

Guimaraes is one of the 10 venues being used for this summer's Euro 2004 championship in Portugal.

Hungary bids farewell to striker Feher

Zoltan Fazekas
GYOR, Hungary, Jan 28 (Reuters) - Hungarian international striker Miklos Feher was buried near his home town on Wednesday after collapsing during a Portuguese league match on Sunday.

He was 24.

Feher, a former Hungarian youth player of the year, died from an apparent heart attack in the closing stages of his club Benfica's televised game against Vitoria Guimaraes.

At an emotional farewell in Gyor, close to Hungary's western border with Austria, Feher's Benfica team mates were among several thousand mourners who braved freezing temperatures to pay their last respects.

They were joined by senior officials from the Portuguese and Hungarian football associations, including Lothar Matthaeus, Hungary's new national coach.

Sports Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany said at a short ceremony that 'Feher's life was all about football, and he gave his life to the game.'

The Gyor cemetery was decked out with floral tributes and photographs of the player. Hundreds of fans from Hungary's leading clubs stood silently, wearing team scarves.

Many wept quietly.

Local media said Feher was due to have been married later this year.

Feher was the second international to die during a game in less than a year. A heart condition killed Cameroon's Marc Vivien Foe at the Confederations Cup in France last June.

Doctors said Feher died of cardio-respiratory arrest. The Portuguese attorney general's office has said an autopsy was inconclusive and further laboratory tests would be carried out on samples taken from Feher's body.

Feher began his career, aged 17, at Hungary's Gyor Eto, where he made an immediate impression. Keen to progress, he moved to Portugal to play for Porto in 1998, switching to Benfica in 2002 after loan spells at Salgueiros and Braga.

Born on July 20, 1979, Feher scored seven goals for Hungary in 25 appearances, including a hat-trick in a 6-1 win over Lithuania in a European Championship qualifier in October 2000.

He scored 18 goals in 48 games for Hungary's Under-21 side.

Aston Villa manager David O'Leary has finally been able to strengthen his squad with the signing of Newcastle midfielder Nolberto Solano in a £1.5million deal.

The Peruvian international has put pen to paper on a two-and-a-half-year contract which will keep him at Villa Park until the summer of 2006.

Solano has been a regular member of the Newcastle side in recent weeks and has started their last eight matches.

But he has also been substituted in the last six matches of that sequence and has now decided to end his five-and-a-half-year stint with the Magpies.

His arrival at Villa will be an enormous boost to O'Leary, whose already small squad is down to the bare bones because of injuries and suspensions.

Gavin McCann will start a five-game ban after Saturday's match at Leicester, while Lee Hendrie is facing up to a month on the sidelines with a calf problem.

Twenty-nine-year-old Solano signed this afternoon after agreeing personal terms and undergoing a medical.

O'Leary has been frustrated in previous attempts this season to bring in new players - including Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson, midfielder Brett Emerton who is now at Blackburn and Chelsea striker Mikael Forssell, currently on loan at Birmingham.

But in Solano he will have a right-sided midfield player who is an expert crosser of the ball - which should aid strikers Juan Pablo Angel and Peter Crouch.

Solano became the first player from Peru to play in England when he joined Newcastle from Boca Juniors for £2.7million in August 1997.

He has also shown an eye for goal on Tyneside, netting 38 times in 213 league and cup starts.

Solano has also played more than 50 times for his country, and it is his absence on international duty for long periods which has often been a stumbling block at Newcastle.

A Villa spokesman said: 'We can confirm that Nolberto Solano has signed for Aston Villa.'

Solano will be paraded to the media at a press conference at the club's Bodymoor Heath training complex tomorrow lunchtime.

I also feel sorry for Quaresma. I hope his talent doesn't goto waste because of Frank Rijkaard's stubbornness.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the lucky one, because he has Sir Alex Ferguson molding him into an even better player.

Rijkaard is doing nothing for Quaresma.

Ronaldo made Scolari's list for the friendly with England and Quaresma didn't....

yay!!!

Walter Samuel will play for Real Madrid next season. After many meetings and discussions the two clubs have signed the deal and the news should become official by the end of the week.

Roma would like to convince the merengues to allow Morientes to move to Italy but Real Madrid prefer to pay the defender in cash. However the two sides are also discussing about Emerson's future and if the Brazilian midfielder will accept a transfer to Spain then Morientes will be wearing a giallorosso shirt in September.

Real Madrid Sign Walter Samuel

05/20/2004. Real Madrid is already looking ahead to next season, and today the Spanish press have announced that the club has officially signed Roma's central defender Walter Samuel.

Madrid and Roma had agreed a transfer fee for the Argentinean defender, said to be around 22 million euros, but Samuel and Madrid only reached an agreement on Thursday.

Samuel has reportedly signed a five-year deal worth 3.5 million euros per season.

The 26-year-old is being brought in to stabilize Real Madrid's shaky defence.

Samuel has anchored Roma's defence since he joined them, from Boca Juniors, in 2000.

It is also being said that Real Madrid are seriously interested in two more Roma players, Totti and Emerson.

Are you sure, my luso friend? Remember, Barça target wasn't the Liga, the goal was go to the Champions. And Madrid? Liga? Champions? Copa del Rey? NOTHING...

And bad move getting Camacho as coach, he's one of the best but do you think Queiroz or Del Bosque were true coach?? Never, both of them were simple figures between the stars and the president, rmember my words, if Camacho get a good team with Madrid, you'll can miss the superstars...

Nuno
05-24-2004, 04:49 PM
Are you saying Camacho won't want galacticos?

Leather
05-24-2004, 04:58 PM
Maybe, this man is so effective, all coaches want the galacticos (who no??) but Camacho preffer another style, I'm sure he wants the galacticos but it will not be the same...

Nuno
05-24-2004, 05:02 PM
I know Camacho is very tough. That's something Queiroz was lacking. What happened at the end of the season for Real Madrid was good. Now they are making wise decisions with there money. Perez says Camacho will have a say in who is signed.

Nuno

Camacho Was A Unanimous Decision - Perez

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez explained the decision to appoint Jose Antonio Camacho as new coach following the sacking of Carlos Queiroz.

"He will be very important in contracting new players," said Perez, dismissing the notion that Camacho will be a mere puppet.

"He will be working with the directors of the club. We think that Camacho, thanks to him being a former player and a Madrid fan, was a very important recruit."

"He has the authority and the moral authority to carry things out."

"Camacho was a unanimous decision. He's always been in our hearts."

"We think this is the ideal moment."

He also spoke of the current mess the club finds itself in: "What has happened over the last two months is hard to understand. We haven't had the order or the discipline in the club."

"Maybe we were too ambitious. But it's hard to understand how the Real Madrid of the past two months has been so markedly different."

"Real Madrid recently have been unrecognisable. We've seen how disorder and lack of authority has taken over."

Leather
05-24-2004, 05:30 PM
The last sentence is clear and the pure reality, I think Camacho is they key to change it but as I said, forget the superstars...
