im close to finishing my top 10 greatest list. I gotta put some more thought into this but ill have it soon. Heres what i got so far

1. Tupac
1. Rakim
1. Nas
4. Krs one (jay-z and nas rolled into one)
5. Jay-z
6. Ice Cube

Rest of my top 10 will have ghostface killah, Biggie, Prodigy, LL cool J

I found out that ice cube was a ghostwriter for a couple of west coast rappers, hes been in the game for a real long time but jay-z is more consistent so i gave him the #5. They both have great flows, very good lyrics, and versatility.

Ghostface killa has 3 classics, hes great lyrically and has a great flow. Hes also one of the best storytellers. Ironman is one of the 3 best cds ever made.

Prodigy was part of 4 consecutive classics in my opinion...he will likely end up at #10 though.

Biggie made one of the top 5 greatest cd's ever with ready to die. Life after death is also an undeniable classic.

LL cool J is not one of my favorite rappers but my list wouldnt be very valid without him on it. Hes still somewhat relevant which is amazing considering he dropped "Radio" way back in 1986 and was part of one of the best rap battles ever, when he had beef with canibus. Even though canibus won i cant front on the great work LL put in.

Rappers that could slip in to the top 10: Common, Cormega and Big L

There so tough to make...I've been studying up on rappers like krs and rakim for the past couple of years...one rapper who might belong here is scarface. Im like a couple of his cds but i admit im not familiar enough with his material and i should listen to him more. Alotta people consider E 40 from the bay a legend but i cant even name 3 songs by him.

Its songs like this that moved Krs one up to #4

lol thats when we forget about this and find something else to post about :lol1:

Someone might say lil wayne...i dont know his earlier material very well but i got him in my top 40-45. DMX, who i still consider my favorite, is somewhere in my top 20 right near busta rhymes. I think dmx coulda made it to the top 5 if his skill didnt steadily decline from one cd to the next. He was incredible on its dark and hell is hot...his lyrics, flow, multiple voices (damien, the convo, stop being greedy), his anger and passion....he was like a east coast pac.

very respectable list...Az and big daddy kane are both somewhere from 10 to 15 on my list. Im not the biggest eminem fan but i cant front on him...lyrically hes right there with the best.

Common might end up stealin that #10 spot from prodigy the more i think about it...i never thought of him as being there with the greatest until now.

if rakim comes out with a new album called get down and his first single features Soulja Boy...thats a sign the world is coming to an end. Can you imagine Rakim doing the superman? Oh god...no please no. lol

Dmx, yeah I think hes a legend, not sure where I'd rank him. I just hope when he gets out of jail he gets his life together. I don't like seeing dmx in jail...he should be out making rap music.

co-sign.....i actually like some of his new songs even though i realize the quality is far less then it once was. I would have to be a stan to think he was still great. One person on another site was sayin they think hes better now then he was earlier in his career

I cant decide what order pac, rakim and nas belong in

pac-most versatile
nas-concept king, >>pac lyrically, best cd ever
rakim-5 straight classics, pioneer

X needs to come out of jail, stay away from drugs and alcohol. If he can do that, I see him doing good again. I think with the right producers and a clear mind, he could be a great rapper again.

2Pac, Biggie, LL Cool J, Ice Cube, Chuck D, Jay-Z, Eminem, Redman, Will Smith, Nas

Honorable mention to Big Pun, Big Boi, Too Short, Common, Scarface, Keith Murray, Erick Sermon, Snoop Dogg, Kurtis Blow, MC Hammer

My criteria is unofficial and varies - for example - I know that Too Short isn't much of a lyricist, but he's put out like 15 albums, memorable hits from the 1980s to 1990s to 2000s and has an unmistakable voice and sound. Longevity and style sneaks Snoop into the list even though he's not a great MC. Number of hits and impact on the game sneak Hammer onto the list. Lack of hit singles keep a Talib Kweli or Kurupt or E-40 OFF the list.

I respect Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, KRS-One, etc. - they just don't resonate with me like the others....

Snoop Dogg should do an album with Game, Dre and Nate Dogg. That would be sick. Throw Cube in there too...

Game
Snoop
Cube

Dre producing...maybe a verse here and there

Nate Dogg doing the hooks.

That would be a great west coast album.

Ice Cube
Biggie
Redman
Jay
Common
Dr. Dre (musically he's contributed so much even if he didn't write his own ****)
Rakim (revolutionized the rap game Paid in Full, Follow The Leader, The 18th letter= great material)

Everybody else is up for debate including Dre. I just put him there because everything he's been apart of is fire.

My list honestly changes each time a thread like this comes along but if I'm basing it on dudes I grew up enjoying always and listening to (not just pure lyrics) I'd probally end up with something like this...

1. Jay-Z
2. Andre 3000
3. Nas
4. Scarface
5. Rakim
6. Biggie Smalls
7. Tupac Shakur
8. Kanye West
9. Too Short
10. LL Cool J/ Big Daddy Kane

*note- Kanye cracked my ten because I have enjoyed all three of his albums so much and can't seem to shake the guy. He may not be the dopest MC but his production and creativity has him in my list.

Honorable mentions- Big Boi, Eminem, Chuck D, Ghostface Killah, and many others.

The guys I listed are just MC's that their music has always been great for me (except LL Cool J lately)

lol. it tough to say. For example, lets say some dude hated Nas, and said I wouldn't put Nas in my 10. We all know that Nas belongs in everybody's top 10. Theres just things that should be, like Jordan has to atleast be in everyones top 5 basketball players. Or I shouldn't say has to be, but realistically its just the truth...I guess thats not as true with rap though because theres no statistics to debate.. Maybe I'm wrong then.

I tried doing this about a year ago and struggled with a top 10, so ended up with a top 20.

I'll try again:

1. Big Daddy Kane
2. Nas
3. Rakim
4. Kool G Rap
5. Big L
6. Grand Puba
7. Biggie
8. Pharoahe Monch
9. MC Ren
10. Raekwon

Honorable mentions :
CL Smooth, Inspectah Deck, Guru, GZA, Black Thought, AZ, Marc 7even (J5), Masta Ace

This list will likely change next week.

in order:

1. Nas
2. 2Pac
3. Jay-Z
4. Kool G Rap
5. Rakim
6. OutKast (or just Andre 3000 if you only want 1 person, but he drops a couple places solo)
7. Ice Cube
8. Biggie
9. Common
10. Mobb Deep (or just Prodigy i spose)

i'm not a believer in the "the older the better" theory... just because you pioneered doesn't make you greater in my eyes (hence me rating Nas over Rakim and 2Pac over Ice Cube)

and it's pretty much a favourite list but with some objectiveness worked in...

and i included two duos cos i don't really count them as groups or solo... they're neither here nor there

to be honest the only one of them that i consider classic is The Infamous (not to take away from the other 3, they're still great albums)

Prodigy was just a beast in his prime and Havoc's production is perfect for his style

he gets overlooked a lot in these discussions about the greats because of some **** that happened off the mic and the massive fall-off he suffered (probably the biggest fall-off in hip-hop history)

dmx is probably the only rapper i like more then prodigy and i gotta say in my opinion he fell off even worse. But prodigy does get overlooked too much and even his music thats not as good is still good because of havoc. Theres not a mobb deep cd that i cant listen to from beginning to end except blood money and havocs solo the kush. Both of them had some bangers on them though...

I agree....maybe their giving him extra credit for ghostwriting for a couple different rappers. I really dont know, all around i dont think he belongs in the top 10. Hes great lyrically, right there with anyone from my top 10. Hes got an original flow. From minimum thrusts, bust multiple assualts in small interims

ugh.....nasty.

Organized first two efforts, the self-titled album and "Extinction" were both classics. It's well debated which one is the better album, but both get respect from the older hip hop generation. An exercise in lyricism:

Both Po and Monch come correct on this track...one of the best off their debut. Then Monch reappears after Equinox as a solo act and releases a gem in "Internal Affairs" (I still have a copy yall). Comes back years later after droves of guest spots and releases a SOLID "Desire".

Monch is a beast.

What is your guys thoughts on Krayzie Bone? He's top 15 for me, but i know he never gets mentioned on these boards.

In my opinion, he's often imitated, never bettered. He has by far the craziest flow, and his switch-up style to a melodic haunting flow is flawless. He also has strong lyrics for the speed at which he raps and more then often is usually the stand-out emcee on any track he features on with other rappers. Thoughts please.

Are you going to question those who place Biggy so high based on your criteria?

Biggie is one of, if not the most talented rapper(s) ever, a level above Pharaohe Monch

and as much as i love Stress: The Extinction Agenda, Ready To Die is better, and Life After Death is better than Internal Affairs

don't get me wrong i'm a fan of Monch, i went through a period where he was pretty much all i listened to, but i just don't think he's top 10 all time material... top 20, yes

BTW, Stray Bullet was always my favourite Organized Konfusion song... and without it we wouldn't have I Gave You Power and Me & My Girlfriend

Big had two subjects, dope and women.

I'd say PM is much more talented considering his diverse range of topics and concepts as well as being the better overall MC.

1. Jay-Z
2. Rakim
3. Biggie
4. Nas
5. Big Pun
6. 2Pac
7. Eminem
8. LL Cool J
9. KRS-One...

Really in no order except #1, you could arrange these guys any way and I wouldn't have a problem, they're all different. Couldn't come up with a #10.

I think biggie was versatile and hes was gettin more versatile as he went along. Skys the limit drops alotta knowledge at the end...

"While we out here, say the hustlas prayer
If the game shakes me or breaks me
I hope it makes me a better man
Take a better stand
Put money in my moms hand
Get my daughter this college plan, so she don't need no man
Stay far from timid
Only make moves when ya heart's in it
And live the phrase Sky's The Limit"

how come people are rating Pharoah Monch so high... he's good but top 10 all time??? the man only has 2 good albums (Stress: Extinction Agenda and Internal Affairs)

I can't believe you don't think Desire was a good album.

I think i got it now....

Tupac
Nas
Rakim
KRS one
Jay-z
Ice Cube
Ghostface killah
LL Cool J
Common
Prodigy (4 straight classics imo)

11 to 15 might look sumthin like this...

11. Cormega
12. Notorious BIG
13. AZ
14. Big L
15. Busta Rhymes

Its very close between pac, rakim, and nas. My order their could change

Ghostface could move up to #5. I asked myself...why is jay-z better then ghostface killah? I cant answer that question.

They both have 3 classics imo (Jay-z...RD, In my lifetime vol. 1, blueprint)
Ghostface (ironman, Fishscale, SC)

I think ghost is better lyrically (both are great) but jayz has a better flow...and theres not a big difference with the flow. I think jay-z has the best flow ever or at least top 3 but ghostface is also one of the best ever.

GFK doesnt have as many cd's but hes got alotta work he put in with wu-tang...

I think Big doe rehab was the best cd of 2007...with ag not too far behind it. Both are great cds, i was bumpin american gangster today and no hook is my ****. If AG was more like kingdom come i wouldnt have to think about this that much. I dont know where im going with this, im gonna have to think about this one more so for now ill keep jay-z at #5 and ghostface killah at #7.
