Who are some fighters in recent history that were changed one way or another inside the ring? Hector Camacho comes to mind after his fight with Rosario. Vargas and David Reid were both shells of themselves after fighting Trinidad. Riddick Bowe was slurring his words and pretty much finished after his final fight with Holyfield, and he was less than 30 years old. Many consider Mike Tysons prime to have been effectively over before he was 24, due to the Douglas beating and all the "yes" men don King had surrounding him. In my opinion, neither Emile Griffith, Ray Mancini or Gabriel Ruelas were as agressive or effective again after killing their respective opponents in the ring. Leon spinks was never anything special in my opinion. But after beating Ali he went off the deep end and never came close to repeating that performance again. A more recent example from the past few years would be fransisco Bojado. This was a can't miss prospect who lost will and desire after one loss. A more ancient example me be the rumors that Max Baer was a much different man in the ring after killing an opponent. Anybody got more example? Somethingt to add or discuss?

Don Curry was never the same after being stopped by Lloyd Honeyghan.

Here's a segment from english television that I haven't myself seen in 20 years!

http://<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/2SnJoU8kxL0&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/2SnJoU8kxL0&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

The end of the fight's here:

http://<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Z3BXQ5Q2C-s&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Z3BXQ5Q2C-s&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

And Honeyghan himself never matched that performance. One might say that the Starling fight ruined him. He was stopped due to a severe swelling on his chin. Post-fight he said that whenever Starling hit him there it was like being stabbed with a knife.

Same with Michael Nunn who never returned to the brilliant heights he had before Toney KO'ed him (5.40).

Agreed. The Honeyghan fight took all the starch out of him. Before that he was a beast.

Honeyghan had a few good wins after Curry, but that was definetly the pinnacle of his career.

Yep, but the Starling-fight killed him.

Naaahhh. I'm not sure that I agree. Taylor had some decent wins over Glenwood Brown and Aaron Davis after Chavez I.

You could say he never was the same after the Norris fight though.

leonard after the 1st duran fight. He actually was better, more confident, a much better fighter after actually the 1st 4 rounds of ass whipping that Duran gave him. The leonard that emerged from round 5 on was the great leonard, before that he was simply talented.

Whoa interesting approach. You could then add Prince Charles Williams after his first fight with Bobby Czyz. Before that fight he was only a solid journeyman. After that he was worldclass for a number of years.

On a slightly different note, its said Eubank was a different fighter after the 2nd Watson fight. I cant say as i was young back then and didnt watch boxing, but iv read that after the Watson incident Eubank was hesitant in finishing off an opponet once he had hurt him.

Ater the Norris fight he was all but shot. But I agree he was a much changed fighter after the first Chavez fight. Brown and Davis were good fighters, but I wouldn't put them in the elite catagory the Meldrick was in before fighting Chavez. After the Chavez fight we never saw the type of Meldrick Taylor who dominated Buddy McGirt again. Jmo.

I never watched a lot of Eubank, but I have also heard this.

Chavez is a good shout. How about Nigel Benn after the McClellen tragedy? Anybody think he was the same fighter, or had he lost something too?

Of course being trough what Eubank went trough against Watson is bound to change a man. But Eubank also had a lot of other wars in his career so maybe the general wear and tear also contributed to his demise.

Eubank was always a dedicated fighter. Always prepared to the max. Love him or hate him. He was a true fighter/warrior.

Lol, true enough!

Lets switch it up a little bit then. Can anyone think of any fighters who were catapulted into prominence because of a tough fight, and managed to stay there long than most expected?

If by changed you mean his face got rearranged, then yeah...
Ketchel after meeting Johnson wasn't pretty either.

Someone mentioned that Leonard was better after the first Duran fight. I think Duran was never really the same again after the second Leonard fight. He was going to retire after that fight and the humiliation of it all. I think a combination of things led to him never really reaching the same degree of intensity, aggression and skill. It was age and the weights he reached in between fights catching up with him. He was still better than most fighters can ever imagine after it and did some freakish things but never really regained the utter mad, and controlled skill that he had up to and including that fight.

The first one is very true but the second....that's crazy! He's had one fight after it and he won it. He also has a huge fight coming up soon as well. God that fight gets overrated in terms of doing Hatton in. Before that fight he was an amazing fighter with amazing stamina and a great chin, now he's just ok with a weak chin and suspect stamina and is also completely shot and not the same fighter?

Nahh, he was changed over a long period of time. A lot of BS, some dodgy decisions and no titles shots turned him into an aggressive skilled boxer, and the Ant fight was just the icing on the cake.

Lamon Brewster hasn't been the same since the Lyakhovich fight.

I'm not sure if Curry was not the same after the Honeyghan fight, I attribute it more to the McCallum loss, he was fighting a very good fight against McCallum before getting caught with that left hook, I think that was the fight that really took it out of him.

Floyd Patterson after the Sonny Liston fights. He became more of a boxer and would've probably had a better chance against Liston with that style (atleast he wouldn't have been humiliated twice in the first).

I think it is a combination of what you pointed out here, but also the fact that he did two things he moved up in wieght and fought better opposition to. It is not uncommon for fighters to move up at age 28 like duran did, and fight great fighters up to age 32 like duran did, but what is uncommon is that his fans ignore the fact that almost every other great fighter including most top lightweights have moved up around the same age that Duran did. Not many had as many fights or where as dominant over a decade at lightweight, but the current fighter also did not have the extremly "bum-heavy" padded list of fights (30+) that where of records and fighers not qualiied to be a sparring partner, yet alone fight for the champions ship.

I think Duran did change due to the fallout from quiting. True, but even peak duran would not beat Leoanrd if he boxed, or hearns at 154, or Hagler, maybe he would beat Benitez at 154. No duran simply at lightweight ws a true great, but not that great as he moved up, but we dont ever hear Duran fans acknowledge other lightweights (whitacker, dlh, Mosley, Robinson, Maywether, Armstrong,) all may not have won as many fghts at lightweght but did move up more successfully.

Mate, you are just incredible. You just don't give up do you. You honestly have one of the scariest, weirdest obsessions I've ever come across on the internet. Really sad. :lol1:

You do know there are other fighters still fighting today don't you? Not just Leonard (love) and Duran (hate)?

Jesus Christ mate....:poke:

Right fookin' freak.
