View Full Version : Head-aches from sparring
!! Shawn 09-01-2008, 03:10 AM Who gets them, and how bad.
I get them on days I get hit, Not too bad. Just kind of a dull pain in the brain, usually where I got hit. I think the disruption in thought patterns is a bigger problem. I just dont want to do anything for the rest of the day.
Ive never had a headache last longer than an hour after I sparred, but that funny feeling lasts a while.

Bro, just drink Gatorade. No BS. Don't ask me how, But it does give rid of headaches.
Salty 09-01-2008, 03:39 AM Yeah I know what you mean, you sort of just feel "blank", I used to get them more but they seem to get less and less in severity. I'm guessing thats just my defence improving though, not sure what else you can do except take an asprin then go to bed or tough it out. Warning do not go to sleep if you have a suspected concussion (ie throwing up due to hits to the head).

NEVER and I repeat NEVER take asprin to get rid of a trauma related headache. Asprin is a blood thinner, if you have any sort of bleeding in your brain, it will make the problem MUCH worse.
peewee1460 09-01-2008, 12:02 PM shawn, i would say talk to a doctor, even though he'll just tell you to stop boxing, so really it's almost just your own personal call. do you want to risk possibly permanent brain damage to continue on in the sport you love? or would you rather take a knee?
peewee1460 09-01-2008, 12:03 PM and given the fact that your colon is eating itself i'd be willing to bet this won't stop you either.
sukhenkoy 09-01-2008, 12:15 PM Yeah problem with a sport like boxing these kinds of pains will probably prompt the doctor to tell you to quit. But like peewee said, if you love the sport, you'll learn to deal with it somehow.
Strange thing is I don't think I've gotten a headache once after a sparring session. I get headaches just out of the blue sometimes, like after school, but never really after sparring.
I'd stay away from the Gatorade though. Just use these headaches as more incentive to work on your defensive skills. Good luck.
RonRoss 09-01-2008, 12:39 PM Shawn? Getting punched? Utter bull****, Everybody knows he is a defensive genius ....
JoHnNyBoXeR 09-01-2008, 12:56 PM i had a headache after one of the first times i sparred.. i was geting hit with madd hooks.. it only happened to me once
MadAxeMax 09-02-2008, 09:11 AM If your getting headaches from sparring it might be because your sparring partner is going to hard on you or you need to work on your defence/footwork :), sparring aint fighting you should hold back on punches(theoretically anyway), that being said the first time i sparred with another guy for who it was also the first time, we both got semi concussed, i was bleeding from the mouth, and my head was ringing for a week, I came back to the gym a few days later, feeling a bit worse for wear, the other guy never came back....I also got a broken rib from sparring once...
NaThBoiii 09-02-2008, 09:41 AM Could be due to dehydration as when your sparring 3 rounds you don't get much of a water break.. Or could just be getting hit, in some of my fights when they have just been brawls I also have just a blank feeling in my head, kind of like a hangover. Goes after ive had a quick sleep though
Boxing does that to one's head....hmmm
punchDrUnK MONK 09-04-2008, 11:15 AM ya , if u get head aches.. its signs of a weak chin... also signs that the sport isnt for u... i personally wouldnt want head aches after each time sparring... BUTT its totally normal for ur first couple of times, so if it doesnt go away after like 20 rounds id worry a bit... all boils down to the point> how bad do u wanna box, do u really love it that much? cuz theres tons more sacrifices to ur body other then a headache if u wanna do this sport
