View Full Version : Bloody viruses....

I always used to appreciate the technical aptitude at virus writing. Now I have found a new level of contempt for their creators in ways most people will never know.

As a Network Abuse Engineer a large chunk of it deals with spam and viruses. We have significant control over the mail servers here and as such have many tools in place to check/block/filter these things.

This new virus (Swen for anyone that doesn't know about it) is one of the new ones.

What pisses me off the most about these things is the fact that people run these things. They get an email with an attachment and they decide to run it. Like moths to a flame, so is the average user.

They see emails that look like they're from Microsoft, nevermind the reply address NEVER corresponds to a Microsoft address.

Good God people....we make people who want to drive sit a test and get a license. Principle should be the same with a computer on the net. Why should liability over a computer be any different because someone has no ****ing idea what they're doing? Ignorance of the law has proven to be no excuse so how come we find exceptions for clueless users.

Update your operating system and software people.

Visit windowsupdate.microsoft.com regularly.

Update your anti virus software. If you don't have any for GODS SAKE get some.

Install a firewall. A real one ideally. None of these ****ty software firewalls. Don't be a *****. Shell out the $50-100 for it. Update it regularly with the patches.

Don't know how to do all this? Hire a consultant. You don't try and change a cracked head in your car if you don't know how do you? No. You hire a mechanic. It's exactly the same.

Get him to show you the basics.

There is a level of responsibility that comes with owning a computer with a network connection and the average ****ing user thinks the ISPs should do all the work. YEAH RIGHT. I suppose you think that the Government should pay for all your car tuneups and repairs too -- particularly after you ****ed the car up in a car accident and were found to be at fault.

**** it, I'm done.

Not when they call you up asking you to fix it.

Maybe I'm bitter over my experience in tech support. But when relatives call you up asking for tech support, you don't want to help them.

Coz you know what users are like,
You know how to treat them,
And you know you don't want to treat your relatives like that.

That and the fact you can't be ****ed really.

Windows update and Norton's live update every week. Anyone who opens an email attachment that isn't a pic deserves it.

My favorite line is. "Oh it's from so and so, it must be safe"

You said it man. This is what I'm talking about.

You gotta wonder how these people function in society I swear.

If they believe that email really is from Microsoft, then maybe they'll believe me if I tell them I can give them some beachfront property in Arizona if they give me their credit card details....

Hubby was proud that I updated (without him reminding me, thanks Jake:) )

We have firewalls and do the Norton update weekly. The only time we had a virus, was on hubby's computer. Shocked us both because he's super at keeping up with stuff and not opening anything he doesn't know where it's from. Oh well, we were fortunate that he had just backed everything up the week before. :)

I found out someone installed a trojan horse program on Arju's computer while we were both in Australia. Dunno if it was intentional or not, that's besides the point. We were already reluctant to let him use the computer (wasn't a hell of a lot that could be done about it really but Arju made the final call as it was her computer).

Man when I find that guy he is in a world of P A I N.

question?will a virus scan always catch a trojan? or will it get overlooked?cause i thought they copied themselves to look like other files?

Anti virus programs SHOULD pick up trojans but not always.

My experience has been that Norton is crap. Especially if you're running any dedicated servers (e.g. Microsoft IIS or something similar). That is based on my professional experience. I've spoken to numerous customers who are running IIS who swear black and blue that they update Norton's all the time and yet it will not pick up a lot of infections. Especially trojans and worms.

I use AVG at www.grisoft.com and I've never had any issues with it. Infact, I've found it to pick up trojans when no other anti virus software has (it was the only program that picked up the virus on our home computer).

I managed to warn something like 30 people today about this virus.

It takes a REAL long time.

I could just warn them but I have to collect logs to prove it was them. Nevermind the virus never alters the reply address (view the header). So searching for logs adds another 5-10min on the time it takes me to warn a single user. Then I have to mail them a warning along with a copy of the offending message. This means each complaint takes roughly at least 10min to resolve.

Not a hell of a lot when you have over 600 instances of it caught on the mail server and the number is rising exponentially....

I feel sorry for the poor bastard who is looking at it tomorrow morning.... I have to deal with it again tomorrow night... urk....
