View Full Version : Advice on glothes/mitts...
KrisSilver 08-18-2008, 05:54 PM Had a 4ft 25kg heavy boxing bag for month or so now and the mitts just seem too thin as I'm easily hurting my hands. The bag is filled with sand and fabric cuttings, the top half is pretty soft, bottom seems overly hard. Got a zip up top so could alter it but would be tricky.
Anyone got any advice, and recommend any particular mitts or glothes? I'm 140 lbs and wana start punishing this bag back! Cheers..
sweet*science 08-18-2008, 06:03 PM Depending on how serious you are about this boxing thing you can find a nice selection on titleboxing.com I have a pair of winning gloves. Rather expensive but my hands are my best investment so I wear them to protect them. Good luck.

Ok, but based on my weight of 140lbs, a 25kg bag - mitts or glothes and what size/weight etc?
sweet*science 08-18-2008, 06:28 PM Im at roughly 158 I started with 14 ounce gloves but had problems with protection so I went up to 16oz. I say 16oz should be where you start I mean every time I spar I wear 16 for protection of my hands and my sparring partner.

And on a 25kg heavy bag? Dunno why they include such thin mitts.
Stormin' Norman 08-20-2008, 07:16 PM get grants, trust me. elcheapo hook and loop. they stand up better than everlasts, and stay far away from those adidas gloves. I had a hand surgery and bought a pair of adidas 12ozs, I was only using my left hand while I trained, but I literally in a two-three month period disrupted the padding in that left glove to where the padding is poking up on top of the glove, etc.
oh, and...
get 16's.
T.I.P. 08-20-2008, 07:18 PM I have Everlast 16's.
Lenny McLean 08-20-2008, 08:55 PM If you are a serious competitor, buy the ones they use in matches at the highest level of the boxing code you compete in, ie. Grant or Reyes if you are a pro and Top Ten, Green Hill or Adidas if you are an AM.
Everlast, Lonsdale and Title make second rate poor quality and **** stuff. From the mid range priced stuff, Twins Special are the highest quality.
KrisSilver 08-21-2008, 04:27 PM I really appreciate all the help, but I'm getting conflicting stuff and not sure which to go with, and don't need high end expensive ones for the little amount I'm doing. I've concluded 16oz pretty much.
Top Ten or Green Hill sound about right perhaps, dunno tho nothing conclusive.
Equilibrium 08-21-2008, 10:57 PM I was able to make a topic about this, but i guess i'll use your thread.
I know i need 16 oz gloves for sure, but im not sure between rival and title bag gloves. I know title gloves are usually great but i also heard good things about rival gloves. I narrowed my choice between these 3:
http://www.rivalboxing.com/e/rb1-e.html
http://store.titleboxing.com/twins-tribal-bag-gloves.html
or
http://store.titleboxing.com/power-weighted-super-bag-gloves.html
The last ones im really not sure about, they said the are 14 oz without the weights, so maybe the protection wouldnt be enough.
Lenny McLean 08-21-2008, 11:49 PM Why wear 16oz gloves when you don't wear them in competition? I think 12oz is the limit. I wear 10oz because you need to be use to punching in the one's you compete in. Years ago I had 16oz and got use to the big overblown pillow cushions and boxing with them. i found it made it difficult when fighting. The way you land punches and the surface area, everything is different. Bxoing is all about manual dexterity and I think some 16oz seriously impair that.
KrisSilver 09-22-2008, 03:19 PM Hate to bump an old thread but really not concluded much here despite some peoples best efforts.
I'm 135 lbs and have a 25kg heavy boxing bag. I'm probably JUST going to be using this, and NOT sparring (though slightly possible later). I have mitts that came with it, but don't see why they ship mitts as my hands cane after using them.
Severl people here have said even on a heavy bag and not sparring, use 16 oz's. This does seem slightly over the top given I'm 135 lbs, and it's pretty much just on a bag.
Plus here people advise 4 oz on a heavy bag, for a MW. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AoKgumKaEE6TDtc1htJqnNMjzKIX;_ylv=3?qid =20071116121542AAxPcws
So surely I'd be roughly the same.
Please can someone help roughly conclude this once and for all.

Mr. V.I.P. 09-23-2008, 02:30 PM Anything....?
Use 16's. I do and I am lighter than ya. It will only make ya stronger.
