View Full Version : The most grief you've got as a boxer
cosmichorn 08-14-2008, 05:42 PM Not sure if this belongs here but it looks like this is the only forum to discuss boxing which isnt world wide.
But whats the most annoying thing you hear when you tell people you're a boxer or say any stupid lines you've heard?
I dont participate in boxing (just a fan) but im a blackbelt in tae kwon do and i always get stupid comments like 'YOUR A BLACK BELT?!?! OMG THAT MEANS YOU COULD LIKE BREAK ME IN HALF!!!'
Although different is it similar in boxing? Could imagine people picking fights alot
Domey 08-14-2008, 06:52 PM "I could kick your ass in a street fight"
Typical thing to hear when people know you're a boxer.
markeeta 08-14-2008, 06:56 PM I get **** for being a girl. When I first started boxing, people's reactions seriously shocked me. I didn't realise it was so taboo and I have learned more about cultural values and social perspectives on gender through boxing than anything else.
I definitely don't want to make any statements and it is not my business to change other people's attitudes. I just box because it makes me feel good.
Generally speaking, it seems that people believe guys are supposed to be big strong warriors and chicks need to hang around dragons wearing short skirts waiting to be rescued. I'm actually fine with this. But I'll do the waiting when their are enough warriors around to start rescuing.
Stormin' Norman 08-14-2008, 07:00 PM most grief ive got was a 3 punch body shot combination from tiger survivor taylor but at the same time it taught me the importance of possessing a strong left hook (which his is)
but seriously what bugs the **** out of me is that one guy who sometimes will call u champ...i hate hearing that
markeeta, just be defensive and don't get a flat nose.. :)
sweet*science 08-14-2008, 09:34 PM I actually get no heat from it i find that more ppl end up saying something along the lines of, "Oh man yea i use to box" or "yea i always wanted to box" or "man my hands are so crazy, i ve been in so many fights, i ve never lost either." Pretty much all amusing to me
Roger Yomama 08-14-2008, 09:53 PM I used to get it a lot back in the days when I kickboxed. Apparently, a bar brawler is harder to hit than a trained fighter and a trained fighter can only win a fight that is in a ring! I **** you not, that was actually said to me in a bar in England.
A friend of mine growing up used to get it a lot worse than me and even olympic bronze, commonwealth gold and the WBC middleweight title wasn't proof that he could take out your average bar fighter. There is always some hero who think's he can impress his mates/girlfriend by getting his ass handed to him in 5 seconds flat
d_lyrik803 08-14-2008, 11:01 PM a lot of people don't expect me to be a boxer, more of a gang banger. i don't tell peeps in general the only peeps that know are my gym friends. sometimes i jump rope, shadow, and do drills in front of my house and my neighbors just stare, half the time in a bad way, and half the time they just plain stare like if they are being entertained. its whatever though, i just worry about my self and getting better, **** the rest.
I don't tell anyone, the only people who know are my gym friends and family.
I started late at 30 years old.
People would not expect me to do boxing I am an I.T geek.
My family thinks its great, my brothers and parents both think it's helped me get out of my shell.
But people in general don't understand, they see it as a brutal bloodthursty sport.
They don' see the skill, the drive the hard work it takes.

Danny Gunz 08-15-2008, 12:24 AM I actually get no heat from it i find that more ppl end up saying something along the lines of, "Oh man yea i use to box" or "yea i always wanted to box" or "man my hands are so crazy, i ve been in so many fights, i ve never lost either." I get that allll the time... people always have to say something when it seems like someone else might eb tougher, they just cant accept it.
Salty 08-15-2008, 12:44 AM Most of the things I get are people trying to be tough (out on the weekend) or you get people telling you there history how they "could have been a good boxer as they have heavy hands" or something like that. It's alright at first until you actually start getting really annoyed with all the future RJJ's out there. Now I just say I dont do any sport when people ask, no point arguing with idiots, they just bring you down to there level and beat you with experience.
Equilibrium 08-15-2008, 02:10 AM I didn't get much grief from being a fighter, when i first started my grandmother was agaisnt it, saying it was a gangster sport and i would get mixed up with the wrong people, that was like 10 years ago, now every time she talks to me she asks how my training is going.
About 2 years ago i was at a party, and a ex-girlfriend was there with her ****** hockey player boyfriend. The guy knew who i was and kept trying to give me attitude like he was a badass or something. I walked up to them just to say hi to the girl(I have to admit i wanted to **** the dude up as soon as i saw him.), he told me to leave his girl alone or i would regret it. I told him that she was probably thinking of me when he was ****ing her. I wasn't even done with my setence that he swung at me, he missed and i cracked him with a straight left. He dropped to the ground like a pounch of potato.
I walked away like nothing happened, she was screaming at like crazy, i'll always remember what she said "*******, YOU'RE JUST AN ANIMAL, PEOPLE LIKE YOU SHOULD BE LOCKED IN A CAGE!"
The day after my mother called me, the ***** had called my mother to tell her what happened. Mom gave me some ****. :nono:

being a blackbelt means less than nothing actually. i know my brother beat the crap out of a TKD blackbelt who won sparring competitions.
why point comps? in chinese boxing, it is full contact including throws and takedowns.
Oriachim 08-15-2008, 02:55 AM Well i'm very short and thin, 5ft 5 and super featherweight so when I tell people I box, they like "wtf, look how small you are, my friend boxes and hes like twice your size and has real big muscles". Something along them lines... Oh and people think because they are bigger than me, think they could fill me in, however when I offer them a match by rules and contest, they turn it down. (they are my friends usually, but my friends think they can beat me up lol).
And Equilibrum, that story sucks man. I hate it when the wrong person gets the blame when the other is to blame.
Talon 08-15-2008, 03:54 AM one day i sparred 5 of my friends in a row and barely got touched.. they are strong football players too. it felt good
most grief was my first time being humbled by a fat guy
kenny91 08-15-2008, 05:32 AM well im the same as Oriachim. im 5 ft 3 and super featherweight. so i get grief too.
But if its not 'ha but ur puny' its 'boxing doesnt make u any harder than me id kick ur ass' (usually comin from a chav with an impressive street record of :
29 fights, 15 wins, 3 ASBO's and 5 counts of GBH.
(****in hate chavs)

LMFAO!!!!!! Great story man! I love when hard asses get smoked!!!!!
lukeybg 08-16-2008, 06:59 AM what i usualy get off people is ' your too skinny to be a boxer!' that really pisses me off!!
Also when people hear i like boxing suddenly everyone thinks theyre an expert on the sport just because they seen a couple of Hatton and amir Khan fights. When Hatton fought Floyd i told everyone Hatton would get beat comfortably and people actually thought i was mad and didnt know what i was talking about because they didnt realise that Floyd was p4p the best.
Ive jst started protein shakes and people at work have started saying ' that stuff will ruin your kidneys' - yes well you smoke 20 a day so **** off. and 'well your no bigger than yesterday' - **** me a forgot i was drinkin magic juice here!!!!!!

haha I remember bringing home a tub of whey and my dad thought it was steroids. I don't think they know it is just basically pure protein, but instead some mystical powder which turns you into arny over night.
thegimmick 08-16-2008, 07:28 AM i understand what you mean about people saying oh streetfighters could knock a boxer out in seconds and somone has told them they would be a good boxer cause they have big hands and the person who told them dsent know the first thing about boxing.:spankme:
and for being a vegi.

good read,
my favorite line was, 'although I have to admit i wanted to **** the dude up as soon as i saw him'
sweet*science 08-16-2008, 02:34 PM Please click one of the Quick Reply icons in the posts above to activate Quick Reply.Just recently I had my friends nephew or cousin explain to me how "sick his hands are". The kid stands up in the middle of the living room while we are all watching the clottey and judah fight and starts shadow boxing while telling me he has been knocked out before and it wasnt that bad, LOL!
Can anyone say COMEDY???
Hitman18 08-17-2008, 01:19 AM The most annoying is when lazy asses who dont do **** all day say that boxing and streetfighting are different, as if the boxer doesn't know it, and that a boxer will get his ass kicked in the streets.
Domey 08-17-2008, 02:21 AM How about seeing people that you seen down the gym once or twice tell people in the street "Yea, I suse to box"
Oh, cause you went down the gym, did a work out, put some gloves on, and hit the bag for a few rounds, you use to box? Cracks me up every time.
Nsull15 08-21-2008, 02:43 PM at 6'1 and 135 i get a lot of **** about being skinny but its stupid because if people knew anything about boxing theyd know that your matched up by weight and besides some of the best boxers were skinny men and im only 15 so i got time to grow and fill out
msagrain 08-21-2008, 03:25 PM I'v gotten "You a boxer... haha" quite a few times by people who don't know me to well. I generally don't tell peole tho.

holy **** are u serious
u should change your first name to Mashiba
edit- buddy if you arent bull****ting, turn your jab into your best tool and try to stay at lightweight...
i dont mean just put glvoes on and hit the bag, i mean every spare second of free time you get you should be throwing a jab, throw jabs in the ****in elevator, throw jabs on your lunch break, **** it. make sure you turn that ***** over and master that proper jab technique
fraidycat 08-21-2008, 06:13 PM Every now and again some ****head from the fantasy fights and lounge boards who doesn't train and doesn't fight says he would knock me out.
Oh, wait. It's the same ****head every time. Never mind.
Aside from him, the worst grief I've gotten has been from doctors, especially after the car accident last spring wherein I messed up my neck. My doctor is the team doctor for our local major league baseball team. He was away at Spring Training when I got in my wreck, so I went to see my wife's doctor, a GP / family physician. First thing he told me was, "Guys your age shouldn't box. I'd strongly recommend you give it up. You're going to have all kinds of neck injuries."
Uh, doc? I strengthen my neck. I do bridges. I do power cleans. I have a harness and weights for my head. I have a neck like a pit bull, that's why it's only a severe sprain and not a fracture.
The chiropractor I saw, the first physical therapist, the massage therapist, and the first two orthopedic surgeons, when they found out I boxed, advised me to stop it; especially with this injury.
I finally went to my own doctor. He understands jocks. He knows that a competitive fighter's physical pain tolerance is a hell of a lot higher than most people, and that when I complain of pain, he needs to listen. I once waited two weeks to have him look at a broken hand because I thought it was a bruise and would go away eventually. I'm that stupid.
He also had a hand-held dynamometer that goes to 300 lbs, not 200. The chiropractor and both orthopedists had 200-lb. dynamometers; they couldn't tell that I'd lost grip strength because I can peg the meter with each hand. My doc works with professional baseball players. He knew right away that something was ****ing up my arm; my dominant hand was only 10 lbs. stronger than my non-dominant hand. He had a new series of MRI's run on my neck at a very specific angle, and found the problem: my "sprain" was a herniated disc. A piece of the disc had been pinched off and was lodged next to my spinal cord, pinching off the nerve to my right arm and giving me headaches.
He said, "That must hurt so bad, I'm surprised you can even see."
"Yeah, it smarts."
"You got deep tissue massage on that? Didn't you say anything?"
"I figured it was supposed to hurt."
He shook his head. "Jesus."
"Can you fix it?"
"Yeah. I'll send you to a guy."
"I won't have to quit boxing?"
"Once the stitches come out, you're good to go."
45-minute operation under a local, six stitches, and I was sparring again in three weeks.
If you box, go to a sports physician. Get a reference from your trainer, or call the local high school or even your local major-league team if you have one. Find out who the jocks go to. Do not go to a GP.
T.I.P. 08-21-2008, 08:03 PM I'v gotten "You a boxer... haha" quite a few times by people who don't know me to well. I generally don't tell peole tho.
Yeah, I got into fight about that. I was starting college and we had to all say what were interest in etc. And I said boxing. So this kid says do ya box? Yes. And he starts talking **** saying I could have ya easy. People just cant handle people being more respected than them. He asked me for a fight so I have it him, left hook to the body and a right uppercut and he was down. Weren't even tough shots he was a fat cunt though but it felt ****ing good.

What makes ya say that? Is it the two punches after another? Or being able to thrown body shots. Something you cant do at all.

Most girls who come to boxing are either tomboys, chavs or love the ****, and usually a mixture of all three. Nornmal girls go to boxercise and tae bo. But I do respect the love you have for the sport, keep it up.
