View Full Version : Is it possible....
Coeco 08-07-2008, 08:19 PM To stretch your legs so much so that you can stand on one leg and bring the other one straight up above your head and hold it there? So you have like, your knee to the torso and the foot above your head? I've seen it when over-agile super jelly persons do it but is it possible for us "humans"?
If it is, what kind of stretching should i be doing and how often?
This is probably the wrong place to ask this, both forum and section wise but i have asked in alot of martial arts forum and haven't gotten an answer so i'd figure i'll turn to you guys. Sorry for beforehand but i had this bugging me for quite some time. Thankful for responds and please dont :spankme: me too hard.
EDIT: Found a video which shows the thing i would like to achieve
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwtM7ZArGxU&feature=related
The thing he's doing at 0:40 is exactly what im trying to get.
sukhenkoy 08-07-2008, 08:23 PM If its possible to give yourself head like Marilyn Manson, you could probably pull this off. Why you would is beyond me though.
I think if you stretch everyday, about 40 minutes to an hour a day you should be fine in terms of flexibility.
Why do you want to be able to perform a stretch like that?
Coeco 08-08-2008, 06:54 AM Cause it would be bloody awesome? Lift up your leg straight up in the air and rush it straight down smacking someones head with your heel in 40 Mp/h, Also it looks cool. You know what kind of stretches i should be doing?

Try lying on your back and bring your legs over your head. Depending on how you position yourself you'll feel the stretch in your shoulders and your hamstrings. Keep doing this and you'll be on your way.

if you had your leg all vertical, I would punch you in the nuts, hahaha :D

I would do the splits like Johnny Cage, and then punch him in the nuts.
As for stretches, just sit down on the floor with your legs straight out in front on you, and touch your toes. Build up to where you can touch your knees with your forehead while you're doing this stretch. I think it could help to get to what you're trying to achieve.

That technique has a name, its called an axe kick. Flexibility is required to perform it and it is a dangerous technique especially when utilised by a taller fighter. Only thing i can advise is to stretch morning and evenings for about 20 - 40 minutes and practice the technique in air and on pads. If you want to see the technique used by a pro type "Andy Hug" into "youtube" and watch some of his K1 fights, he had one of the best axe kicks in the business. You may also want to explore joining/talking to some tae kwon do practitioners, thats the sort of stuff they love using.
Hope this helps and best of luck with your training,
Coeco 08-08-2008, 03:29 PM Ah, so that's what the thing is called, Is it possible to keep holding your leg up there or is it just Up and chop down?
Also, you don't happen to have a list over what kind of specific stretches i should be performing?

Well i suppose its possible to hold your leg up, but i can't really recommend it if you're planning to use it in a fight. There are many different variations of the kick; jumping, spinning and jumping spinning variants and also throwing the kick from different angles, all is possible. In regard to stretches, there really isn't any special stretch that will help you, i can only advise you to stretch frquently and progressively and to practice the kick. Also on another point, the axe kick isn't an easy kick to use it does require timing and accuracy to be used effectively in any situation. The main thing about the kick is just to practice throwing the technique in a controlled manner and slowly build height and power
regards,.
Coeco 08-08-2008, 08:53 PM Been stretching all day and already seeing some progress :3, But do you really need to stretch 40 minutes a day? Cause i heard the usual time for holding a stretching pose is 30-120 seconds so that cant be right, now can it?
sukhenkoy 08-08-2008, 09:41 PM You're not gonna hold the same stretch for 40 minutes obviously.
What I do is 1.5 minutes hamstring stretch, 1.5 minutes calf stretch, 1.5 minutes each quad, 1.5 minutes glutes each side, and 1.5 minutes each leg touch your toes (forehead to knees). Do that 3-4 times a day and it amounts to about 40-45 minutes of stretching.
mightymouse2k 08-09-2008, 07:29 AM Watch this guy too see the axe kick being used to its full effect. (Its also a good motivational video).

Yeah... hes definitely one of my all time favorite fighters.
Rest in Peace, Andy Hug.
Coeco 08-09-2008, 11:06 PM That axe kick looks pretty ****in badass, why doesn't more people use it?.. i mean, its like unblockable, 1KO's anything it hits and its quick to perform

Because its not easy to pull off in a fight and if you miss it'll leave you wide open for a big counter. Its takes alot of practice to make effective and also requires alot of confidence to use. There are so many other safer techniques to use that can score you a KO with, e.g. roundhouse kick, right cross. The axe kick can be blocked with a rising block and can also be easily parried by slight lateral body movement and a strong guard.
I agree the axe kick is a great technique but its still a technique out of many techniques.
