Mafcherano 08-09-2008, 03:00 AM Bad management! Edwards should go. Wait for 2012 he says? LOL. Old fart probably thinks Olympics come every four months! number6 08-09-2008, 01:09 PM There goes our gold medal hope, failed to make the weight, all that money and backing and still cant make the weight :dunce: This situation looks suspect to me, what a mistake for someone at that level to make. The lottery money invested in him could have gone to a good cause. Maybe he should be made to pay it back when hes making a fortune in the pro ranks. Im just wondering if he failed some sort of internal drug test or something like that. Im sure someone who competes at that level would be able to cut 3 lb's with the time he had to do it. You have a point but I think it is the fact hat Terry Edwards the dickhead thinks drying out is a risk and he said so in that interview which is available on BBC. I think Gavin has been prevented from drying out because of the involvement of too many non boxing people in the camp. Them nutritionists and dieticians know **** all. They should have an old school trainer in charge of all of it who would deal with such situations with pragmatism, not pseudo-science. Mafcherano 08-12-2008, 12:33 AM Let's vote on it: http://www.boxingscene.com/forums/showthread.php?t=202010 number6 08-12-2008, 07:28 AM I still think there is more to this than meets the eye, but if its not and it is just the coach not letting him dry out those few lbs he should look for a new career after the games. What a huge tactical mistake to make at this sort of level this is a once in a lifetime chance for a fighter I would be interested to hear the oppinions of some amatuer fighters or coaches on this situation PunchDrunk 08-12-2008, 08:35 AM Edwards should go???? He's managed to ressurrect English amateur boxing from the grave, into a force to be reckoned with. Give the man a raise, I say! I talked to Gavin at the EU championships in late June, where he fought at 64kg. He beat European Champ Boris Georgiev so easily, he made Georgiev look like a beginner. He also made Georgiev look small, physically. The whole week, I never saw Gavin out of his sweatsuits, with a big overcoat, exceot when he was in the ring, or at the lunch hall. He told me he walks around at 73kg at home, and he had a hell of a time even getting to 64. Since then I've been predicting that he wouldn't be able to make weight (at boxrec.com's am forum). This is not a case of negligence by Edwards, not a case of Gavin having bad discipline. This is a case of a guy qualifying almost a full year before the Olympics, and simply growing out of his weight division. If there's one single factor to blame, it's the qualifying system. !!! You predicted Gavin might struggle to make weight on this forum as well. Gavin must be more than a flash in the pan beating Georgiev easily. Makes it even more of a shame that he's got bigger. Could be a very good pro if he can find some power. Mafcherano 08-12-2008, 02:26 PM Edwards doesn't deserve no praise, he has not done ****. It is the club coaches that made these men. He is just fortunate to be their to claim victory and is also lucky he has funding so is not dealing with part timers like his predecessors and many of his foreign competitors. The man should be sacked. He admitted he would not let him dry out the 3lbs for his own 'safety'. It's only a few ****ing pounds and only 4 rounds. Top pro's dry out up to 15lbs for 12 round fights! If it was more than 3lbs he should stay, bit if he wins no medals the he MUST go as that money (OUR money) would have been better put down the drain. Same applies for Sven so why not Edwards? PunchDrunk 08-12-2008, 06:05 PM It's a fact that under Edwards' program, England has twice as many boxers qualified for the 2008 Olympics as they had for the 1996, 2000, and 2004 combined. It is also a fact that these fighters, who weren't producing results up untill a few years ago, have been trained as a team, in Sheffield under Edwards, full time for the past couple of years. 4 training sessions, 4 days a week, and then long weekends. I've seen some of these guys out at international competitions over the past few years, and it is really incredible, the progress they've made. Absolutely astounding. No one could have even dreamed of an English squad like that four years ago, when Khan was the lone qualifier for Athens. "It was only 3 lbs" - geez, you don't know what you're talking about do you? It was the final 3 lbs that he couldn't lose! He told me he walks around at 73kg, that is 13kg or 28lbs! Additionaly, he has to weigh in the morning of every fight, so that means he has to dry out and be able to fight 5 times. The pro's do it once for a fight, and they have 24 hours to regain weight. Frankie could have as little as two hours till fight time, and he wouldn't be able to rehydrate because he'd have to make weight again for his next fight. Like I said, I've seen the kid with my own eyes, and his days of getting below 60kg were over a long time ago. Just not possible. Mafcherano 08-12-2008, 06:55 PM Make weight for his next fight?LMAO. Are you pissed. Of course he can rehydrate as they will not be boxing on same day, or even the next day and will have time. Pro's dry out upto 15lbs for upto 12 rounds and no, they do not always get 24 hours if you knew a thing about boxing. They don't have two minute rounds either. Many am's around the world dry out by upto 6lbs including CUBANS. Have you ever been to a pro fight weigh in? Many of them have only a few hours before fights. Gavin would have more time and 3lbs is nothing. You have no idea what you are on about. Edwards made a stupid decision by not letting him dry out. It is not as if the olympics come every 4 months. The old gimmer has a bad sense of time. He said it's all good Gavin has the next olympics. BTW, Edwards was in charge last Olympics when only one boxer qualified. He is ****! The fact he has spent money and time on training camps for most of the week works against him! If he does not win a GOLD medal or a few silvers, he has to go for me. There are better trainers out there. have you met him? He talks ****. PunchDrunk 08-13-2008, 04:30 AM Make weight for his next fight?LMAO. Are you pissed. I've talked to Frankie Gavin, seen him fight, seen him train, seen him run around every day for a week, trying to sweat off 10 lbs to get to 64kg for each fight of a tournament. I know what I'm talking about, clearly you do not. Pros weigh in the day before (24 hrs) a fight, ams weigh in, in the morning before every fight. Gavin was never gonna make 60kg again, he outgrew the division in the 10 months between qualifying and the start of the Olympics. There it is, I'm done, spout whatever ignorant Bull you want. Lenny McLean 08-19-2008, 08:18 PM You obviously talk **** because if you did train a few pro's you would know not all club fighters have the luxury of weighing in 24 hours before. This could be different in different places, but many shows still have sameday weigh ins and people still dry out with no ill effects. Back in 80's even Superfights like Hagler Leonard had same day weigh ins. Whatever the reasons for him outgrowing the division, his team has to take the blame if there are no golds at the end. Bronze is a joke considering money invested. If Edwards does not get a gold, then his head will have to roll as he is head coach and a muppet like you. |
